4 August 2, 2015 Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Exodus 16:2-4, Psalm 78 Ephesians 4:17, John 6:24-35 A recurring theme in Exodus I the grumbling or murmuring of the people against Moses and the LORD. In today s text they accuse Moses and Aaron of having brought them our of Egypt into this desert to make the hole community die of famine! (v 3). In response the LORD sends them quail and manna, bread from heaven, not only to provide for them but also to test them, to see whether they follow my instructions (v 4). These gifts from heaven serve to prove to the Israelites that I, the LORD am your God (v 12). They have just deprted Egypt, a land with hundreds of gods, but it is the LORD who cares for them and who invites them into an exclusive relationship. Today s Gospel continues the story of the loaves and fish as the disciples follow Jesus to Capernaum, across the sea (v 25) from where they were fed. He challenges their motive for following him, claiming that they are seeking him because you ate the loaves and were filled (v 26). More important than the food he gave them, which is food that perishes, is the food that endures for eternal life (v 27). They compare the food he gave them to the manna their ancestors ate in the desert. But Jesus tells them that it is not Moses but my Father [who] gives you the true bread from heaven (v 33). Their response is to ask him to give us this bread always (34). The author of Ephesians encourages his audience to no longer live as the Gentiles do (v 17). Embracing the Christian faith, they are called to put away the old self (v 22) and put on the new self, created in God s way in righteousness and holiness of truth (v 24) For Reflection: Do I sometimes forget the ways God has blessed me in the past? Do I pray for a deeper hunger for the bread from heaven? LAWN CREW Aug. 8 - Team #1 - Paul Bleess, Tom Siler and Eddie Langston In your prayers: Barb Dormer, Terry Brown, Carolyn West, Oneida Chapple, Gwen Miller, Angelica Hernandez-Ortiz, John Deane, Rina Reyes, Beverlee Leo, Cooper Hayes, Carlos Handal, Bob Robinson, Art Davis, Olga Caubo, Carlos Silva, Vi Slagle, Rita Parr, Marie White, Dianne Blanchard, Julie Taylor, Pat Stewart, David Merryman, Richard Ernst and John Guidry The Gospel tells us This is my beloved Son. Listen to him. By listening we are able to live the gospel. Gospel living is something so simple as taking the time to listen to those who need to spill out their hearts when seeking help. Through your gifts to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul you enable the members of the Society to become a listening heart to the hungry, the homeless and the struggling poor. If you can donate any non-perishable food items, toiletries or paper products, please deposit them in the bins provided in the gathering area. THANK YOU!!! Volunteers are needed to help handle the numerous requests for assistance that come into the St. Vincent de Paul Society. If you can donate some time to assist in this ministry, please call the parish office at Weekly Stewardship Scripture Reflections The crowd in today s Gospel demanded a sign from Jesus. May our faithful stewardship be a sign to others that we, like the Ephesians in the second reading, have laid aside our former way of life and acquired a fresh, spiritual way of thinking in Christ. Back Pack Program More than 21 million children qualify for free or reduced-price meals through the Na onal School Lunch Program and the Na on al School Breakfast Program. For many of these children, school meals may be the only meals they eat. What happens when they go home over the weekend? Our parish has been helping children get the nutri ous and easy-to-prepare food they need to get enough to eat on the weekends. Through your generosity we have been filling bags for students at one our local elementary schools. Last year your response was so overwhelming that we went from helping 3 students to doing 7 bags a week. As the beginning of the school year is fast approaching we are asking for your help now so we can stock up to begin the first week of school. Listed below are items we are in need of: Canned chicken or tuna, peanut bu er, jelly, individual pkgs. of Mac and Cheese, chicken noodle soup, individual boxes of cereals, Chef Boyardee small variety cups, Small packets of raisins.
5 Let s Thank God for All He has given us this summer! We are all quick, including myself, to go to God in prayers when we are in trouble, having problems, need something, ask for something for ourselves, family and friends. But we o en forget to thank Him for all that good things that He does for us. These include the small and simple things of our everyday lives. Things like the house we live, the vehicle we use to get around, the job we have which provides us with the house and vehicle and much more. The health we have, the ability to wake each morning to live another day. We need to just thank Him for the body and life we live each and every day. To do this I invite you to come with a family member or friend to show you thanks to God and Jesus by coming to visit Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament, which will be exposed in the Monstrance, this coming First Friday, August 7, 2015, following the 8:00AM Mass and ending with Reposi on at 7:00PM. He awaits you visit and will con nue to have mercy on you, as you do pray and ask for those things that you need, but He also enjoys your thanksgivings. NOTE: If you would like to commit to a par cular me monthly or have any ques ons, please call Herb Blanchard at or me at de_kajun@bellsouth.net. HE AWAITS YOUR VISIT! Attention Parishioners!!! We are missing several round white tablecloths, If you borrowed any of them or perhaps took some home to launder after a parish function and forgot to return them, please do so A.S.A.P. They are quite costly to replace. Thanking you in advance.
