It s World Mission Sunday! As Catholics around the world here at home and in the Missions gather at the Eucharist around the table of the Lord, we are to pray for the Church s worldwide missionary work. We pray for those awaiting the Good News of our Lord s great love for us and for the missionaries who offer the poor and suffering the light of Christ. And we are to offer financial help through the Society for the Propagation of the Faith for more than 1,150 dioceses in Asia, Africa, Latin America and the Pacific Islands. Also on this day, we celebrate with our peruvian community the Feast of Señor de los Milagros. The Hermandad(Brotherhood) del Señor de los Milagros de San Diego is inviting everyone to our annual celebration. Celebrating what occurs every year in Peru - St. Rose homeland - this event is this Sunday at the 1:15pm Spanish Mass, followed by a procession and a reception in the hall. Delicious typical Peruvian dishes, an artistic show and raffle will be a part of the reception. For more on this Feast, pleasee see page 6. Please join us! All Souls Day Remembrance The parish community of St. Rose of Lima will celebrate a Memorial Mass on All Souls Day, Friday, November 2, at 6:30 p.m. for parishioners who died and for all our beloved dead. We invite you, your family and friends to be present with us at this liturgy. A special remembrance candle, which is yours to keep, will be lit and carried in procession at the Mass. SAVE THE DATE - January 26, 2013 with Immaculée at st. rose of lima Immaculée Ilibagiza s life was transformed dramatically during the 1994 Rwandan genocide where she and seven other women spent 91 days hiding silently in a cramped 3x4 foot bathroom of a local pastor s house. Immaculée entered the bathroom a vibrant, 115-pound university student with a loving family. After 91 days in hiding, she emerged from the bathroom weighing just 65 pounds and finding her family had been brutally murdered. Immaculée Ilibagiza will share her story of survival, as well as her journey of finding God and forgiveness for her family s killers. Immaculée s first book, Left to Tell is a New York Times Best Seller, and has been featured on 60 Minutes, The CBS Early Show, CNN and USA Today. To date, Left to Tell has been translated into over 20 languages worldwide, and is under contract to become a major motion picture. SEÑOR DE LOS MILAGROS, SAN DIEGO, CA The Señor de Los Milagros (Lord of Miracles), also known as Christ of Pachacamilla or Cristo Moreno (Brown Christ) is an image of Christ our Lord on the cross, located above the Altar of the Sanctuary of Las Nazarenas in Lima, Perú. Peruvians in Peru and around the world honor and venerate it, as it is considered a miraculous image. The annual procession is a Peruvian tradition, and is considered one of the largest recurring Catholic manifestations in the world. According to Peruvian author/historian Raúl Porras Barrenechea, an Angolan slave named Pedro Dalcon painted it in the mid 17th century. Many scholars agree that is was painted by a slave, however many refer to the painter as anonymous for lack of evidence. The image is sometimes known as Cristo Moreno, or Brown Christ, because many of its devotees are of African-Peruvian descent. Circa 1651, during the papacy of Pope Innocent X, with García Sarmiento de Sotomayor as Viceroy of Perú, and Pedro de Villagómez as Archbishop of Lima, the Angolan slaves formed a fraternity in Pachacamilla, the outskirts of Lima. It is here that the image of Christ was painted by hand on an adobe wall. The quality of the painting was imperfect, the wall rough, the untrained painter said to have been inspired by an unwavering devotion to Christ. Over time a small chapel was built surrounding the painting. On October 20, 1687, an earthquake of magnitude 8.7 struck the coast of Lima, Callao and Ica, causing widespread destruction to major buildings, churches and homes. To the surprise of local residents, the chapel was destroyed but the weak adobe wall with the image of Christ remained unscathed. As word spread of the miracle, a copy of the painting was made in order to allow for a procession on the streets of Pachacamilla. It is here that the annual procession was born, proposed by the caretaker of the chapel, Sebastián de Antuñano. Today, the procession in Lima consists of tens of thousands of people, following alongside the image of Christ while members of the Brotherhood of Lord of Miracles (Hermandad del Señor de Los Milagros) take turns carrying the large anda, with the image of Christ perched atop nearly 2 tons of adorned gold and silver. SEÑOR DE LOS MILAGROS, SAN DIEGO, CA Late in 1993, a group of local Peruvian residents convened with the goal to establish the first Brotherhood of Lord of Miracles in San Diego. Relying on devotion, faith, fervor and veneration to their Patron of Peru, the Hermandad del Señor de Los Milagros de San Diego was founded on April 24, As a catholic group, the Brotherhood joined the Parish of Holy Trinity in El Cajon, and with its support the first procession took place in October of Over the years the Hermandad del Señor de Los Milagros has counted on an increasing number of members and volunteers. With their contributions and dedication to the faith of our Lord the religious group has grown and expanded. Through the constant work of the board of directors, the institution has continued to gain support and new devotees of the Lord of Miracles. The Hermandad del Señor de Los Milagros is currently at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Parish in Chula Vista, where a painting of the Lord of Miracles hangs near the altar. The group assists with the Ministry of Hospitality every 4th Sunday during the 1:15pm Mass. The Hermandad del Señor de Los Milagros invites the community at large to the Mass and welcomes with open arms volunteers and new members.
