2 Fifth Sunday of Easter May 6, 2012 Quinto Domingo de Pascua Mayo 6 de 2012 Yo Soy La Vid Verdadera BEARING FRUIT Few of us, even when we meditate on the image of the vine and branches, stop to really think about how God prunes us. For some there is the danger of thinking that we are already producing fruit for the kingdom, in deed and truth as John says, perhaps raising a family, being active in our parish, and so on. But even those branches which are bearing fruit, the Gospel tells us, can be pruned to produce still more. Today Saul, freshly pruned by his conversion, arrives in Jerusalem and meets resistance. Since he had been persecuting Christians, this was only natural. But even after he is accepted and begins to bear fruit, he meets further adversity, and his letters are filled with many accounts of how his trials pruned him to produce greater fruit for the kingdom. Like him, as long as we remain in Christ we will continue to bear fruit and, when the will of the Father determines it is time to prune us, the strength of the true vine must enable us to endure it. First Communion Classes for Junior High and High School Students Do you have a junior high or high school student who would like to receive their First Communion or even Baptism? OUTREACH VOLUNTEERS NEEDED! St. Patrick s Outreach Pantry is in need of volunteer workers to work on Wednesday and/or Thursday mornings from approximately 9:00 Am - 10:15 am. Volunteers help restock shelves on both mornings and unload items brought from the Food Bank on Thursday morning. If you would like to join the morning pantry crew or have any questions about Outreach, please call, ex. 31. Thank you. 5 DEN FRUTOS Pocos de nosotros, incluso cuando meditamos sobre la imagen de la vid y los sarmientos, nos detenemos a pensar realmente acerca de cómo Dios nos poda. Para algunos, existe el peligro de pensar que ya estamos produciendo frutos para el reino, de verdad y con hechos como dice Juan, tal vez criando una familia, siendo activos en nuestra parroquia y así. Pero incluso aquellas ramas que están dando sus frutos, nos dice el Evangelio, se pueden podar para producir aún más. Hoy Saulo, recién podado por su conversión, llega a Jerusalén y encuentra resistencia. Ya que había estado persiguiendo a los cristianos, esto era natural. Pero incluso después de que lo aceptan y comienza a dar frutos, se encuentra con más adversidad, y sus cartas están llenas de muchos relatos de cómo sus pruebas eran podas para que produjera más frutos para el Reino. Al igual que él, siempre y cuando permanezcamos en Cristo, vamos a seguir dando frutos y, cuando la voluntad del Padre, determine que es hora de que nos pode, la fuerza de la vid verdadera deberá permitirnos soportarlo. Jesús añade que los sarmientos (ramas) que permanecen en Él, dan mucho fruto. Según la agricultura, la vid es una parra, es decir, una planta perenne de ramas frondosas. Una parte importante de la vid son las hojas. Es obvio que una vid tiene hojas, pero Jesús no las menciona, prefiere enfocarse en los sarmientos. Las partes de la vid son las raíces, tronco, sarmientos, hojas, flores y fruto. Según esta división Jesús sería el tronco, pero él dice ser la vid completa. Esta es una imagen de la unidad que Jesús quiere entre sus seguidores. Recordemos que Jesús celebra la Última Cena con sus discípulos. La comunidad de discípulos unidos a Jesús formamos la vid. Los sarmientos o ramas conducen agua y minerales a las hojas, flores y frutos, y son útiles en tanto estén unidos a la vid. Lo mismo vale de los cristianos, discípulos de Jesús. Quinto domingo de Pascua - Semana del 6 de mayo de 2012 Elijan una de las siguientes actividades como una forma de reflexión sobre las lecturas del domingo: Hagan un paseo familiar en la naturaleza y junten ramas de árboles. Cuando lleguen a casa, aten un cordel a las ramas y creen un juguete móvil. Recuerde a cada miembro de la familia de qué manera Jesús es la vid, el apoyo de la vida de cada persona, y de qué manera funcionamos como las ramas para difundir su palabra a todos. Conversen sobre las maneras en que permanecemos en contacto con la vid que es Jesús. Dedicamos tiempo todos los días a orar? Con qué frecuencia leemos la Biblia? Tenemos un lugar tranquilo donde podemos ir a veces para estar solos con Dios? Somos ramas que dan fruto? Comente en la cena acerca de alguna buena obra que hará por alguien esta semana. Pida a cada miembro de la familia que diga cómo ayudará a extender el Reino de Dios. Dedique tiempo a visitar a un miembro de la parroquia que no puede ir a misa el domingo. Tal vez pueda compartir las lecturas del domingo con esa persona. No amemos solamente de palabra; amemos de verdad y con las obras. 1 Juan 3:18 El Encuentro Matrimonial Mundial te invita a vivir un Fin de Semana donde les facilitara a tener un encuentro como pareja, que fortalezera su relacion y ayudara a su familia a vivir mas unida aprendiendo tecnicas de como mejorar nuestra comunicaion. PERIOD OF MYSTAGOGY LEADING INTO MYSTERY During this Easter Season our neophytes (newly initiated into the Catholic Church at the Easter Vigil) have been attending the 9:00 a.m. Mass. This will continue until Pentecost Sunday, May 27, when they will be commissioned to go forth with us to continue the mission of Jesus Christ. Mystagogy is about mission. As they attend Mass each week with the assembly, they are deepening their faith through sharing in the listening (hearing) of the Word of God and coming to the table of the Eucharist as part of the Body of Christ. This is a time for the community and the neophytes together to grow in deepening our grasp of the paschal mystery. This is done through meditation on the Gospel, sharing in the Eucharist, and doing works of charity. To strengthen the neophytes as they begin to walk in newness of life, our community of the faithful should reach out and give them thoughtful and friendly help. PLEASE CONTINUE TO PRAY FOR OUR NEWLY INITATED NEOPHYTES. 7 SHAMROCK THRIFT STORE Please bring any small kitchen appliances, kitchen items, clothing, jewelry or furniture donations to the St. Patrick s Shamrock Thrift Store Tuesday through Saturday from 10:00 am to 4:00pm. For more information call the store at Get On The Bus Thank you St. Patrick s for supporting the Get On The Bus Program. So many of you took the brochure to learn more about the program. We will be contacting the volunteers who signed up for the June 2 reception to provide more information. If you are interested in being a volunteer at the reception but didn t sign up, please contact Tom by tjclough@charter.net Donations can be made in any amount and the envelopes can be placed in the collection basket this weekend, a later weekend if needed or mailed in the self addressed envelope. Checks can be made out to GOTB or Get On The Bus. ALPHA The ALPHA Crib and Change For Life Program will start this Mother s Day weekend, May 12 and 13. Please take a tag from the crib showing an item that has been requested by Alpha to support maternity and infant needs and return these items the following weekend, May 19 and 20. Also, please take a baby bottle to fill with coins and return the bottles with coins on Father s Day. We have large baby bottles for schools and businesses. PATTY FOSTER The Outreach Coordinators extend a heartfelt thank you to longtime Outreach volunteer and director of the morning pantry crew PATTY FOSTER. Patty is leaving the pantry crew to spend more time with her family. For more than 15 years, Patty has worked four mornings a week directing and working with the morning volunteers as they sort food Jim & Patty Foster items, stock shelves, unload food deliveries, organize freezers and refrigerators, making sure that the afternoon pantry workers have everything ready for distribution to the many people coming to St. Patrick s for food. We are unable to count the hours that Patty has dedicated to this work. She is indeed one of Sister Eva s special angels, the person who stays in the background, doing the difficult work that others don t always see or appreciate. Patty, we cannot thank you enough for your years of service to the many people in need. You exemplify the spirit of giving of time and talent; your life reflects Christ s call to serve others.
