1 November 4, 2012 Thirty-first Sunday in ordinary time A note from your pastor Dear Parishioners, Two years ago we began preparing for our 75 th Anniversary. Parishioners and school families joined together for the planning of the celebrations, which was a huge undertaking. Lots of hard work and a tremendous sacrifice of time and talent has gone into each piece of the anniversary. And now, I sit in awe with all that has been accomplished due to these efforts. We have a wonderful 75 th Anniversary book; a beautiful parish pictorial album with photographs taken by our very own talented parishioners; a fantastic carnival that was attended by almost 1,000 parishioners and CKS families; and our 75 th Store, which would not be a reality without the tireless devotion of our volunteers Peachtree Road, NE Atlanta, Georgia WHAT S INSIDE: Around the Parish Page 2 SVdP Winter Woolies Page 3 LifeTeen Page 4 CKS Open House Page 5 Year of Faith: Focus on the Saints Page 6 Adopt-A-Family Page 8 Hispanic Pages Pages Now I look forward to our last two big events. There will be a Dedication Mass with Archbishop Wilton Gregory on January 19, 2013, with a grand reception to follow in the Hyland Center gym. And on February 9, the Cathedral Ball will be held. The inaugural dedication reception took place on January 18, 1939 at the Piedmont Driving Club, the very site of this year s gala. What a special way to mark 75 years ago when the Cathedral was dedicated. Seventy-five years later, the Ball is a thank you to our founding fathers. The cost of the ticket covers everything you will need to make the evening a memorable one. In addition, a portion of all ticket sales will go toward the restoration of our lovely Rose Window. If you are having trouble thinking of a Christmas gift for your spouse or significant other, I can t think of a better gift than tickets to the Ball. Last year I was supposed to be my niece s sponsor for confirmation but at the last minute, my schedule wouldn t allow it. To make it up to her, since I can t fly to Ireland myself, her confirmation gift is to fly her here to be my date for the Ball and she is thrilled. So I already have my date for the Ball. Do you? God Bless You, Fr. Frank McNamee, Pastor

Due to health reasons, her first request to join a religious community was refused, but she was finally able to take her vows in Soon after being named prioress of the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart, she was urged by Pope Leo XIII to become a missionary in the United States. However, the house that had been promised to her for an orphanage was unavailable when she reached New York City, and the archbishop advised her to return to Italy. Frances departed from the archbishop s residence all the more determined to stay and establish that orphanage. And she did. In 35 years, Frances Xavier Cabrini founded 6 institutions for the poor, the abandoned, the uneducated and the sick, and organized schools and adult education classes for formation in the Catholic Faith. She died of malaria in her own Columbus Hospital in Chicago in She was the first United States Citizen to be canonized, and she is known as the patron saint of immigrants. Continue to increase my awareness of the gentleness of your loving plans. I want to follow the purpose for which I was created. See, I am in your hands. I need you to help me choose the best way to serve you. Walk with me, Jesus. Stay by my side and guide me!

9 THIRTY-FIRST SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME NOVEMBER 4, 2012 What is an Active Parishioner? Our parishioners are often asking us to verify that they are an active practicing Catholic. The question of parishioner status is important because this question comes up in many circumstances such as: Certification as godparents/sponsors for Baptisms and Confirmation Active parishioner tuition rates in Catholic grade schools and high schools Preparation of couples for marriage Preparation of parents for their children s Baptisms Scheduling of the facilities for liturgical services such as Baptisms, Weddings and Funerals. Enrolling children in the Religious Education Programs and Sacramental Programs for First Reconciliation, First Eucharist and Confirmation. The Archdiocese of Atlanta defines active Parishioners as those registered and worshipping members (i.e., who attend Mass weekly) who contribute of their time, talent and financial resources to support the Parish. In practice, Parishioner verification is done by looking equally at three criteria: Registration, Regular Mass Attendance, and Financial and Time Support. Registration One must be officially registered as a parishioner of the Cathedral, as recorded in our parish database, for at least 6 months. Registration forms are available at the front desk or online. Regular Mass Attendance Catholics are obliged to attend Mass on Sundays and Holy Days. Participation in the communal celebration of the Sunday Eucharist is a testimony of belonging and of being faithful to Christ and to his Church. The faithful give witness by this to their communion in faith and charity. Regular receipt in the Sunday collection basket (at least once per month) of a contribution envelope (or, if participating in E-giving, our electronic giving option, and submitting a parishioner donation slip in the collection basket) provides an objective measure of regularity of attendance at Christ the King. Financial Support and Time Support Level of financial support will vary from family to family depending on the family s income. When you participate in your parish, you are helping to build the Kingdom of God here on earth. You help build the Kingdom by joining a parish organization, volunteering in one of almost 100 ministries operated by the parish, enrolling in an educational program and giving financially to meet the needs of the parish. If you have any questions regarding the parishioner verification process, please contact Molly Kerr at Fr. Frank McNamee encourages you to be an active member of our parish. Your parish and your own faith life is enriched and strengthened by the participation of our members! 10
