Mike Dear Friends, UPDATE ON CAPITAL CAMPAIGN Here s a report on where we are with the Diocesan Capital Campaign Reclaiming Christ s Mission Together Parish Goal Summary Parish Goal: $599, Funds Raised: $456, Remaining to Raise: $142, % of Goal raised: 76.18% THANK YOU for your generosity and for stepping up to meet this great challenge to support the Diocese of Oakland, while at the same time helping our own St. John s. The funds raised came from 127 Pledges and 187 onetime giving,. We have $142, left to raise to meet our goal. It would be fantastic if we have100% participation from our parish community. As you know, St. John s will be applying for a grant to pay for the renovation and expansion of our gym, toxic clean up of our newly acquired property and replacement of the school s roof. The higher our parish participation the greater chance of our grant being funded. The Diocese of Oakland will be providing us with guidance and support as we go through this application process. If you have not turned in your pledge, please do so as soon as you can. 4 St. John s Church RELIGIOUS EDUCATION - Just a reminder: Registration forms for the new school year are available in the parish office. Last month to register will be August. When full payment is made at the time of registration, a 10% discount will be applied. This will be in effect up to June 30 th. Only one discount per application is honored. HELP NEEDED FOR FLOWER CARE Please consider giving one hour each month to help discard old flowers, wash vases and keep our statue areas clean. 6 Iglesia Católica San Juan Bautista Quiero Compartir con ustedes estas reflexiones, Queridos Amigos, La segunda lectura de hoy nos da un ejemplo extraordinario de cómo es una vida de fe. San Pablo le dice a los corintios que tiene una espina clavada en mi carne. Los eruditos de las Escrituras han discutido acerca de lo que era esa espina. Tal vez sea mejor que no lo sepamos, ya que cada uno de nosotros tenemos nuestra propia espina clavada en nuestra carne. Pudiera ser una enfermedad crónica, una relación rota, una gran desilusión, desempleo o muchas otras cosas. Lo que debemos emular es la actitud. Cuando estemos tentados a gemir o quejarnos de nuestras espinas clavadas en la carne recordemos que la fuerza se pone de manifiesto en la debilidad. Esto es una paradoja central en la vida cristiana y la cual es difícil de aceptar en la vida diaria. Que san Pablo interceda por nosotros para que nuestra fe sea fortalecida aun en nuestra debilidad. 7 Página Siete TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE Muchos hispanos que vivimos en Estados Unidos somos personas bilingües. Podemos leer la Palabra de Dios en inglés o español. Por ejemplo, el texto de Juan 21:15-19, en el que Jesús le pregunta a Pedro si lo ama. El texto en inglés nos dice que Jesús le pregunta tres veces: Peter, do you love me? Pedro le responde: Lord, you know that I love you, mientras que en español le dice: Señor, tú sabes que te quiero. La diferencia es casi imperceptible, pero importante. El texto original fue escrito en griego y usaba dos palabras que significan amor, ágape (amor que se sacrifica) y fileo (amor fraterno). En inglés, Jesús y Pedro usan la misma palabra, love, mientras en español Jesús dos veces pregunta por amor, y Pedro responde con querer. La tercera vez, Jesús se acopla a Pedro y sólo pregunta en torno al querer, reconociendo que en ese momento, Pedro no puede darle más que eso. Jesús le asegura que algún día Pedro sería capaz del amor ágape entregando su vida por él. Jesús se acopla a nosotros pidiendo lo que le podemos dar y ayudándonos a crecer hasta que podamos darle toda nuestra vida. POR QUE, DEBO REGISTRARME EN LA PA- RROQUIA DONDE RESIDO O ASISTO A MI- SA? Hay muchas razones por las cuales uno debe registrarse como miembro de la parroquia, por ejemplo: Para recibir los sacramentos del Bautismo, Primera Comunión, Confirmación, Matrimonios, Visita a los enfermos. Recibir los sobres de ofrendas, recibir estado de cuenta de los donativos durante el año para deducción de impuestos. Además, cuando ustedes necesitan cartas de recomendación, cartas de certificación, o recibir informaciones por correo de lo que está pasando en su parroquia. Para recibir cartas para Immigración, se requiere que estén registrados por lo menos seis meses antes. POR FAVOR UTILICEN SIEMPRE SUS SO- BRES PARA DONACIONES.
