En cambio Javi may be at home now.
Este grupo incluye: can / could may / might must deber shall / should deberia will / would querer ought to debería needn t dare used to poder /saber puede que no tener que atreverse soler, acostumbrar 2. La negación se forma añadiendo + NOT (+n t) 1. Solo tienen una forma. I can He can We must We must not 3. Las preguntas se hacen por INVERSIÓN I can Can I? 4. Los verbos modales* van seguidos del infinitivo sin to She should to be more polite. She should be more polite. Excepto OUGHT TO. 2
5. Los modales no tienen infinitivo (y por lo tanto no tienen ni futuro ni condicional, ya que se forman con will o would + infinitivo) I will can. tampoco tienen la forma en ing (y en consecuencia, no tienen formas continuas) I am canning. y tampoco tienen participios (y consecuentemente, tampoco tienen tiempos compuestos) I have canned. O sea, que solo tienen una forma. Be able to y have to son semi-modales, pues se pueden conjugar, y need to (no confundirlo con el modal needn t) es un verbo léxico, pero los tres se incluyen en el grupo porque comparten algunos usos de los modales: capacidad, obligación y necesidad, respectivamente. Modals of ability can / could / be able to Can se usa para expresar capacidad ( poder o saber ) en el presente. Danny can climb mountains and run marathons. Two of my friends can play the guitar. Modals of ability can / could / be able to could se usa para expresar capacidad en el pasado. When he was a child, he could ski really well. It was raining so heavily that I couldn t see anything. Modals of ability can / could / be able to be able to se usa para expresar capacidad (significa poder o saber, lo mismo que can) en todos los demás tiempos verbales. I ve never been able to understand maths. In the future, people will be able to live under the oceans. Ojo. Recuerda que be able to es un semi-modal y puede conjugarse. must / have to / needn t / should / ought to must y have to se usan para expresar obligación. I know I must stop smoking or I ll die. Students have to hand in the exercises by Tuesday. En el caso de must, la obligación es autoimpuesta mientras que con have to, la obligación viene de fuera. Pero de momento, les consideraremos sinónimos. Ojo. Recuerda que have to es un semi-modal y puede conjugarse. 3
must / have to / needn t / should / ought to mustn t se usa para expresar prohibición. Students mustn t use MP3s, mobiles or any other electronic equipment in class. Ojo. Don t have to no se puede usar para expresar prohibición. must / have to / needn t / should / ought to needn t y don t have to se usan para expresar ausencia de obligación (no es necesario). Friday s a holiday I don t have to work. You needn t pay me now tomorrow s fine. must / have to / needn t / should / ought to should y ought to los usamos para dar consejos o expresar nuestras opiniones. You know, I think you shouldn t eat so many sweets. People ought to drive more carefully. Modals of possibility and certainty must / could / may / might / can t must y can t se usan para expresar deducciones lógicas. must se usa cuando estamos seguros de que algo es verdad. Mary is still crying she must have a problem. It must be quite late, because it s getting dark. Modals of possibility and certainty must / could / may / might / can t y can t se usa cuando estamos seguros de que algo es imposible. That can t be true, I saw her with my own eyes. Come on! You can t be serious. You re joking. Modals of possibility and certainty must / could / may / might / can t could, may y might se usan para expresar posibilidad (puede que) en el presente o en el futuro. She could be at home. (perhaps a 50% chance) Ana might be there too. (a smaller chance) According to the radio, it may rain today. It might even snow. 4
Algunos verbos modales se usan con have + participio pasado para dar opiniones sobre hechos pasados You should have been here an hour ago. She could have married anybody she wanted to. That was stupid! You could have broken your leg! Must have + participio pasado Se usa para expresar una certeza positiva o una conclusión lógica acerca del pasado. Jesús must have felt dissapointed when his team didn t win. Where s Joey? I don t know. He must have gone home. can t have + participio pasado se usa para expresar que un hecho pasado nos parece prácticamente imposible. Where s Lucy? She can t have gone out the door s locked. She can t have passed the exam! She didn t study at all!! might / may / could have + participio pasado se usan para expresar posibilidad en el pasado. Ojo con la traducción al español! They could have gone to the cinema. Puede que se hayan ido al cine. She may not have arrived yet. Puede que no haya llegado todavía. She might not have read your . Puede que no haya leído tu correo. Nota. Recuerda que la posibilidad con might es más remota. could have + participio pasado Se usa también para sugerir que una acción podría haber sucedido en el pasado, aunque ya es imposible que suceda. You could have helped me! Why didn t you? You could have told me about last night concert, you know I love Coldplay! should have + participio pasado se usa para decir que algo debería haber sucedido en el pasado, pero no sucedió. You should have been here an hour ago. Why are you so late? I failed my last exam. I should have studied more. 5
shouldn t have + participio pasado Se usa para expresar arrepentimiento o crítica respecto a acciones pasadas. You shouldn t have lied to your dad! I shouldn t have stayed out so late last night. 6
