2 English p. 2 Deutsch s. 3 Français p. 6 Español p. 8 Lyrics p. 10 The intention of this work was to collect songs that I heard sung as a child by my mother, and those sung in the evenings in our local Goan community in my town in Mozambique. These songs had a simple musical structure and their melodies were always on my mind. Goa, Daman and Diu were our overseas provinces until 1961 and there still exists a significant Portuguese cultural tradition. These songs have remained with us and I decided to record them with more up-to-date musical arrangements, while still preserving the original root for our future generations, so that they should not lose our beautiful musical tradition. Here is SHANGRI-LA GOA - I hope you enjoy it! - Gonzaga Goa, India The state of Goa is situated on the western coast of India, on the Arabian Sea. At 110 km long and 60 km wide, it is the smallest of all the Indian states. According to legend, Goa was formed by an arrow shot into the sea by the god Parashurama, causing land to rise up and adjoin the rest of the country. Goa is bordered by Maharashtra to the north and Karnataka to the east and south. The Arabian Sea forms a jagged and picturesque coastline to the west, to which Goa owes much of its beauty and its desirability as a tourist destination. A number of rivers flow through Goa forming estuaries and natural harbours which helped establish Goa as an important port on the ancient trade routes. Panaji ( The Land That Never Floods ) is the state capital, and is situated in North Goa, near the coast. The largest city in Goa is Vasco Da Gama, named after the famous Portuguese explorer. It was the Portuguese who colonised Goa in the early 16 th century, introducing their customs to the state. Due to this much of the culture, music and architecture of Goa has a distinct mix of Indian and Portuguese influence. In 1947 the rest of India gained independence from Britain. Goa, however, remained under Portuguese rule until 1961 when it was annexed by the Indian army. Goa became India s 25 th state in Traditional Goan Music: It was the Portuguese who introduced the use of violin, piano and mandolin into Goan music. Local Konkani song can be categorized in four sets. The first one illustrates the pure form in melody and rhyme such as the fugdi or dhalo. The second set combines western and local music but preserves Konkani libretto, as in deknnis. The third category combines local and global music along with the lingo such as dulpod and the fourth category is heavily influenced by global music and librettos in Konkani along with Portuguese lyrics such as in mando.

3 Mando: This is the most common kind of Goan folk music. Mainly a love song genre, mando is an amalgamation of Indian and global melodic forms. This music form emerged from a traditional melodic form in the 1840s and today is presented by the Goan catholic Christians. Instruments used in mando are the ghumat, a Goan drum, guitar and violin. Ovi Songs: Ovi songs are a kind of wedding music principally played among the Hindu society in Goa. Goan women hum Ovi hymns while anointing the bride and groom with coconut squash milk, or while making seasonings for dinners. At the time when Christianity was brought to Goa, they missionaries integrated biblical contents into the Ovi songs. Goans frequently assemble around a bonfire and reverently sing Ovi hymns created by the missionaries. Gonzaga Coutinho Born in Mozambique, pianist, singer, author and composer of numerous musical works, Gonzaga received all his musical inspiration from the 1960s. Gifted with a talent and extensive musical experience obtained throughout his career, he has gained a great following throughout the country and abroad. He participated in the Festival RTP da Canção and in various television programmes, and continues to perform in concerts across the country. In 2002 Gonzaga recorded his first album ÌNDICO together with Rão Kyao, Olavo Bilac and Dani Silva among others. SAUDADES DO TOM in 2006 was his second album, a portuguese tribute to the Brazilian maestro Tom Jobim (Antônio Carlos Jobim), with the collaboration of several musicians and friends including Rui Veloso, Ivan Lins and Sofia Vitória. This album, SHANGRI-LA GOA, with songs of traditional Goan music was recorded in 2010, with special guests including Rão Kyao, Carlos Guilherme and Susana Brito. This is a world music oriented album devoted to preserving and promoting songs of the old Portuguese overseas provinces Goa, Daman and Diu. * * * Mit diesem Werk wollte ich Lieder sammeln und für die Nachwelt bewahren, die ich als Kind von meiner Mutter hörte, oder die an den Abenden im Kreis unserer örtlichen goanischen Gemeinde in meiner Stadt in Mosambik gesungen wurden. Diese Lieder hatten eine einfache Struktur und die Melodien gingen mir oft durch den Kopf. Goa, Daman und Dio waren bis 1961 unsere überseeischen Provinzen und es gibt dort immer noch eine bedeutende portugiesische kulturelle Tradition. Diese Lieder sind in uns lebendig geblieben und ich beschloß, sie aufzunehmen. Ich wollte an den ursprünglichen Wurzeln festhalten, die Songs jedoch in etwas zeitgemäßeren Arrangements präsentieren. So hoffe ich, diese Musik für zukünftige Generationen zu bewahren und zugänglich zu machen, damit unsere schöne Musiktradition nicht verlorengeht. 4 Goa, Indien Der Staat Goa liegt an der Westküste Indiens, am Arabischen Meer. Mit 110 Km Länge und 60 Km Breite ist es der kleinste indische Staat. Der Sage nach entstand Goa, als der Gott Parashurama einen Pfeil ins Meer schoß. Land stieg dort aus dem Meer auf und verband sich mit dem Rest des Landes. Goa grenzt im Norden an Maharashtra und im Osten und Süden and Karnataka. Das Arabische Meer bildet eine zerklüftete und malerische Küste im Westen, der Goa viel von seiner Schönheit und Begehrtheit als Urlaubsziel verdankt. Mehrere Flüsse fließen durch Goa und bilden große Mündungen mit natürlichen Häfen, was in der Vergangenheit dazu beigetragen hat, daß Goa zu einem wichtigen Umschlaghafen entlang der alten Handelsrouten wurde. Panaji ( Das Land das niemals überflutet wird ) ist die Hauptstadt. Sie liegt in Nordgoa nahe der Küste. Die größte Stadt ist Vasco da Gama, nach dem portugiesischen Entdecker benannt. Die Portugiesen kolonisierten das Land im frühen 16. Jahrhundert und brachten ihr Brauchtum mit. Dadurch finden wir in Goa eine besondere Mischung indischer und portugiesischer Einflüsse in Kultur, Musik und Architektur gewann der Rest von Indien Unabhängigkeit von Großbritannien. Goa blieb jedoch unter portugiesischer Herrschaft bis 1961, als es von der indischen Armee annektiert wurde wurde Goa Indiens 25. Staat. Mando: Dies ist die am weitesten verbreitete Form goanischer Volksmusik. Mando ist eine Kombination indischer und globaler Musikformen und wird hauptsächlich für Liebeslieder verwendet. Diese Form entstand ca aus einer traditionellen Musikform und ist heute unter den goanischen katholischen Christen beliebt. Begleitinstrumente sind die Ghumat, eine goanische Trommel, Gitarre und Geige. Ovi Songs: Ovi Songs sind eine Art Hochzeitsmusik, die hauptsächlich unter der Hindu-Bevölkerung in Goa gespielt wird. Goanische Frauen summmen Ovi-Hymnen, während sie die Braut und den Bräutigam mit Kokosmilch salben oder während sie die Gewürze für das Abendessen zubereiten. Als das Christentum nach Goa kam, führten die Missionare biblische Inhalte in die Ovi-Lieder ein. Goaner versammeln sich gerne um ein Lagerfeuer und singen hingebungsvoll die Ovi-Hymnen, die von den Missionaren hinterlassen wurden.

6 Gonzaga Coutinho Gonzaga, geboren in Mosambik, Pianist, Sänger, Autor und Komponist unzähliger musikalischer Werke, schöpft seine Inspiration aus den 1960er Jahren. Mit großem Talent und ausgedehnter musikalischer Erfahrung, die er im Laufe seiner Karriere gesammelt hat, gewann er eine große und treue Gefolgschaft, sowohl im Inland als auch im Ausland. Er nahm am Festival RTP da Canção und an verschiedenen TV-Sendungen teil und unternimmt Tourneen durch das ganze Land nahm Gonzaga sein erstes Album ÌNDICO auf, unter anderem mit Rão Kyao, Olavo Bilac und Dani Silva. SAUDADES DO TOM (2006) war sein zweites Album, eine portugiesische Hommage an den brasilianischen Maestro Tom Jobim (Antônio Carlos Jobim), das er in Zusammenarbeit mit mehreren Musikern und Freunden aufnahm, einschließlich Rui Veloso, Ivan Lins und Sofia Vitória. Das vorliegende Album SHANGRI-LA GOA, mit Songs traditioneller goanischer Musik wurde 2010 aufgenommen. Auf der CD sind als besondere Gäste Rão Kyao, Carlos Guilherme und Susana Brito zu hören. Dies ist ein Weltmusik-orientiertes Album, das die Lieder der alten portugiesischen überseeischen Provinzen Goa, Daman und Diu bewahren und verbreiten soll. * * * L objectif de cette œuvre était de recueillir des chansons que ma mère chantait quand j étais enfant ainsi que celles que l on entendait le soir au sein de notre communauté goanaise dans ma ville au Mozambique. J ai toujours gardé en tête les mélodies de ces chansons de structure musicale simple. Les provinces de Goa, de Diaman-et-Diu, qui jusqu en 1961 comptaient parmi nos colonies, cultivent encore de nombreuses traditions portugaises. Ces chansons vivent encore en nous, aussi ai-je décidé de les enregistrer sous une version musicale plus moderne, tout en restant fidèle à leur nature d origine de façon à préserver notre belle tradition musicale pour les générations à venir. Voici SHANGRI-LA GOA j espère que vous aurez plaisir à l écouter! - Gonzaga Goa, Inde Goa est un État de l Inde sur la côte ouest du pays, baignée par la mer d Arabie. Son territoire de 110 km de long et 60 km de large en fait le plus petit des États indiens. Selon la légende une flèche tirée par le dieu Parashurama serait tombée dans la mer, faisant surgir Goa et ajoutant ce nouveau territoire au reste du pays. De fait, la culture, la musique et l architecture y présentent souvent un mélange évident d éléments indiens et portugais. En 1947, le reste de l Inde proclama son indépendance, marquant le départ des Britanniques. Goa, resta sous domination portugaise jusqu à ce que les troupes indiennes l annexent au pays en En 1987, Goa devint le 25 e État indien. La musique goanaise traditionnelle: Les Portugais introduisirent l usage du violon, du piano et de la mandoline dans la musique goanaise. La chanson konkani existe sous quatre formes. La première, comme le fugdi ou le dhalo, en est la forme la plus pure sur le plan de la mélodie et du rythme. La seconde, dont le deknnis, associe musique occidentale et musique régionale tout en s accompagnant de paroles en langue konkani. La troisième, dont le dulpod, mêle musique régionale et étrangère et paroles en konkani, alors que la quatrième forme est fortement marquée d éléments de musique d autres pays avec des paroles en konkani et en portugais comme dans le mando. Le mando: ce genre de folk goanais est le plus répandu. Principalement constitué de chansons d amour, le mando est un amalgame de mélodies indiennes et d autres pays. Né d un style traditionnel de mélodie dans les années 1840, il est aujourd hui l apanage des Goanais de religion catholique. Les instruments du mando sont le ghumat, tambour de Goa, la guitare et le violon. Les chansons ovi: les chansons ovi, sorte de musique de mariage, sont principalement interprétées par les hindous à Goa. Les Goanaises les fredonnent tout en apprêtant les futurs mariés, à savoir en les enduisant de lait de noix de coco, ou en préparant des assaisonnements pour le dîner. Avec l arrivée des missionnaires et durant la christianisation de Goa, des textes extraits de la Bible y furent ajoutés. Les Goanais se rassemblent souvent autour d un feu en chantant religieusement des cantiques ovi créés par les missionnaires. Gonzaga Coutinho Né au Mozambique, ce pianiste-chanteur-auteur-compositeur qui compte de nombreuses œuvres musicales à son actif, a pour sa musique tiré son inspiration des années 60. Fort d une riche expérience gagnée au fil de sa carrière, cet artiste de talent s est conquis un public fidèle dans son pays et ailleurs. Il a participé au festival RTP da Canção et à diverses émissions à la télévision, et continue de se produire en concert dans le tout pays. En 2002, Gonzaga Coutinho a enregistré son premier album, intitulé ÌNDICO, en association avec notamment Rão Kyao, Olavo Bilac et Dani Silva. Ce disque dans le genre musique du monde vise à préserver et à faire connaître des chansons des anciennes colonies portugaises que sont les provinces de Goa et de Daman-et-Diu. * * * La intención de este trabajo era recoger canciones que cantaba mi madre cuando era niño, y las cantadas a la noche en nuestra comunidad local goana en mi ciudad de Mozambique. Aquellas canciones tenían una sencilla estructura musical y sus melodías siempre estaban en mi cabeza. Goa, Daman y Diu eran nuestras provincias en el extranjero hasta 1961, y sigue existiendo una importante tradición cultural portuguesa. Estas canciones han permanecido con nosotros y he decidido grabarlas con arreglos musicales más actualizados, mientras sigo manteniendo la raíz original para nuestras futuras generaciones, de forma que no pierdan nuestra hermosa tradición musical.
