4 6 BAJA INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL, LOS CABOS 7 PRESENTACIÓN INTRODUCTION La segunda edición del Baja International Film Festival, Los Cabos, ofrecerá del 13 al 16 de noviembre un programa de actividades de industria diseñado cuidadosamente para los profesionales que este año se darán cita en este nuevo espacio de intercambio comercial y cultural. Además de mostrar lo mejor de su cinematografía, las industrias fílmicas de México, Estados Unidos de Norteamérica y Canadá tendrán la oportunidad de interactuar con importantes representantes de compañías de Europa y América Latina. Nos hemos dado a la tarea de fortalecer las relaciones cinematográficas de la franja norteamericana a través de la creación de un espacio dinámico y útil para tejer redes que ampliarán las posibilidades de proyectos fílmicos en desarrollo y en postproducción. En esta apuesta por apoyar el término de películas mexicanas en postproducción, presentamos a la comunidad cinematográfica internacional el primer Work in Progress México, en el que además de obtener un premio en efectivo para la finalización de la película, la compra de derechos por la empresa Moviecity, y un premio paralelo de servicios de postproducción en alianza con Splendor Omnia-Mantarraya, ofrecemos un escaparate para que estas producciones sean mostradas a destacados representantes de festivales de cine nacionales e internacionales que biff ha convocado. Mesas de diálogo y reunión de productores de la cinematografía estadounidense y canadiense compartirán espacios de discusión y reconocimiento para la presentación de proyectos susceptibles de coproducción con México. Además, biff confirma su compromiso con la vanguardia y las nuevas tecnologías con la presentación de una mesa de discusión sobre plataformas digitales y ventanas alternativas de exhibición. La capacitación a profesionales surge como inminente necesidad ante el vertiginoso mundo de las ventas y promoción en el ámbito de los festivales y mercados internacionales. Por ello, hemos diseñado el Taller de Capacitación de Agentes de Ventas, que será impartido por reconocidos especialistas internacionales a productores mexicanos que desean incursionar en este campo. El programa de industria se fortalece a través de la primera edición de Gabriel Figueroa Film Fund, un fondo anual de apoyo al desarrollo y la postproducción de proyectos mexicanos con miras a su internacionalización. De la mano de nuestro aliado Labodigital, y un jurado de talla internacional, biff y Gabriel Figueroa Film Fund otorgarán $140,000 usd en incentivos reales para la industria mexicana. From the 13 th to the 16 th of November the second edition of Baja International Film Festival, Los Cabos, will offer a program of industry-related activities carefully designed for the professio nals who will gather at this new space for cultural and commercial exchange. The film industries of Mexico, USA, and Canada will not only have the opportunity of showing the best of their cinema, but also of working together with renowned representatives of European and Latin-American companies. Our task is to strengthen filmic relations in the North-American area through the creation of a dynamic and useful space to establish networks which will broaden the possibilities of film projects in progress or in their post-production stage. Aiming to support the conclusion of Mexican films in their post-production stage we present to the international film community the section Work in Progress Mexico, where winning projects will get a cash award for their conclusion, as well as the purchase of their film rights by the company Moviecity, and a parallel award endowed with post-production services offered in alliance with Splendor Omnia-Mantarraya. We also offer a showcase for these productions to be shown to the renowned national and international film-festival representatives gathered by biff There will be discussion tables and meetings with producers of American and Canadian cinema who will be present talking about and recognizing the projects susceptible for a co-production with Mexico. biff is also confirming its commitment with the avant-garde and the new technologies through a discussion table on digital and alternative exhibition platforms. Continuous professional training is a clear need in face of the dizzying world of film sales and promotion in festivals and international markets. That s the reason why we designed the Training Workshop for Sales Agents which will be offered by prominent international specialists for those Mexican producers interested in working within this field. The industry program is strengthened by the First Edition of Gabriel Figueroa Film Fund, a yearly fund created for supporting the development and post-production of Mexican projects in order for them to be presented abroad. En esta ocasión, seis largometrajes de ficción o documental han sido cuidadosamente seleccionados con el fin de presentar ante los profesionales de la industria nacional e internacional congregados por biff una oferta propositiva del talento mexicano, mediante la cual, los proyectos ganadores puedan transitar con pasos certeros hacia su terminación y comercialización. biff ha diseñado este espacio de Work in Progress buscando que los resultados que se desprendan incidan en forma directa, tanto en la culminación de los proyectos en etapa de postproducción a través de los premios biff y Splendor Omnia-Mantarraya, como en su comercialización y aproximación al público gracias al premio Moviecity. Committed to strengthening Mexican cinema through the development of its industry, Baja International Film Festival, Los Cabos, 2013 presents the first competing Work in Progress space exclusively focused on Mexican film projects. This time, six feature-length fiction and documentary films were selected carefully in order to present before the national and international professionals gathered at biff an innovative offer of Mexican talent allowing the winning projects to advance firmly towards their conclusion and commercialization. The Work in Progress space was designed by biff trying to have as its result a direct influence in the conclusion of projects at their post-production stage through the biff and Splendor Omnia-Mantarraya awards as well as in their commercialization and audience-reaching effort through the Moviecity Award. We also want for this gathering to offer the representatives of the selected projects the possibility of establishing and strengthening professional networks. In this group, human values still govern their coexistence; however, its members have a serious problem: they need a shower. Antonio and Bertha are an elderly couple, about 90 years old, who find themselves in trouble when social security pensions are suspended due to a financial and social crisis in the country where they live. Given the fact that their children have not visited them in many years they are confronted with the need to survive by themselves. The couple is forced to sell their belongings and sustain themselves selling food on the street or stealing. The lives of the two elderly people change when their son Jonas and grandson Paco, absent from their lives for over a decade, appear unexpectedly once again. Mauricio Durán is an influential representative of the film industry in Latin America. With 27 years of experience in the film industry, he has released theatrically over 1,300 films including more than 100 blockbusters, and is behind the release of more than 30 Mexican films. In 2007 he was responsible for creating the first Universal Pictures office in Latin America, located in Mexico City. After only one year of operations, he managed to increase in 80% the box office for the studio. Today, Universal Pictures International Mexico is the highest-grossing film distribution company in Latin America. Desde 1999 Nadia Dresti formó parte del comité de selección del Festival de Locarno y fue nombrada directora de la oficina de industria. 12 22 BAJA INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL, LOS CABOS PÁNELES DE PANELS PÁNELES DE INDUSTRIA INDUSTRY PANELS En su búsqueda por fortalecer y promover las relaciones entre las industrias cinematográficas de México, Estados Unidos y Canadá, Baja International Film Festival, Los Cabos (biff2013) presenta este espacio dedicado a tres paneles cuyo objetivo es proponer nuevas vías para que proyectos fílmicos de estos tres países puedan relacionarse y encontrar las mejores opciones para cumplir sus aspiraciones. A través de la exploración de las oportunidades que presentan las plataformas digitales, se analizarán las opciones que ofrecen estas herramientas para el financiamiento, promoción, comercialización y distribución de proyectos fílmicos. Por otra parte, en los paneles diseñados para examinar las posibilidades de coproducción entre México, Estados Unidos y Canadá se analizarán casos de éxito que servirán como punto de partida para explorar los distintos caminos que puede seguir un proyecto cinematográfico y vincularse con la industria cinematográfica de América del Norte. Trying to strengthen and to promote the relationship between the film industries of Mexico, USA and Canada, Baja International Film Festival, Los Cabos (biff2013) presents a space dedicated to three panels aiming to offer new ways for filmic projects from these three countries to establish networks and to find the better options to fulfill their aspirations. Exploring the opportunities presented by the digital platforms, there will be an analysis of the options offered by these tools in terms of funding, promotion, commercialization, and distribution of filmic projects. The panels designed to examine the co-production possibilities between Mexico, United States, and Canada will also help to analyze successful examples which will work as the departure point to explore the various ways a film project can follow in order to establish a link with the North American film industries. De esta manera, en su segunda edición, se da a la tarea de promover la capacitación y profesionalización de agentes de ventas internacionales, un área que hasta el momento ha sido poco explorada en nuestro país y sobre la que estamos conscientes existe un gran interés. biff convocó a productores y distribuidores mexicanos con un interés específico en formarse como agentes de ventas y con experiencia previa en la comercialización de derechos de producciones fílmicas a participar en el Taller de Capacitación de Agentes de Ventas que se llevará a cabo los días 14 y 15 de noviembre en el marco del Festival, manifestándose como un evento pionero en este tipo de talleres en nuestro país. Con este taller, el biff tiene como objetivos primordiales: exponer la importancia de los agentes de ventas en el contexto de la producción fílmica de nuestro país; dar a los participantes las herramientas necesarias para integrar un catálogo de películas con un perfil determinado; dotarlos de estrategias para la realización de negociaciones con compradores y distribuidores en mercados y festivales, así como para la explotación de derechos en las diferentes ventanas de exhibición; además de brindarles herramientas legales y administrativas para realizar contratos y cobranzas. This is a little explored area in Mexico and we are aware of the great interest around it. biff has summoned Mexican producers and distributors, specifically interested in being trained as sales agents and with previous experience in the commercialization of the rights for film productions, to participate in its Sales Agents Training Workshop to be held on the 14 th and 15 th of November as part of the Festival.
