After having to deal with a redistricting battle that changed the primary election to a date in May and the runoff to Tuesday. Texans went to the polls and finally made their choice of their party s standard bearer for the national election. The eyes of the nation where on Texas as unknown Texas Solicitor General, Ted Cruz took on David Dewhurst, the candidate who many felt was the anointed one because of his ties to the Republican Party and Governor Rick Perry. In Bexar County Cruz led by 55 percent to Dewhurst s 45 percent with almost half of the county s precincts reporting. Observers feel Cruz was able to capitalize on what many called Dewhurst s lack luster campaign and when he did turn it on it was too late in the game. They said that Dewhurst s appearance in San Antonio Monday with Gov. Perry was good and bad. Good because he talked about his military record, his tenure with the CIA and other items that made him look different that the candidate from primary vote and the campaign that followed, but Perry was his drawback. Cruz, however, took a page out of the Tea Party guidelines and hit all the right buttons. He talked the conservative line that the Tea Party has pushed in every other state with winning candidates. At the same time, Tea Party names courted Cruz. Just last weekend, the darling of the party campaigned for Cruz at the Woodlands in Houston, Sarah Palin. At that same outing Right Wing talk show host, Mark Levin, came on board and supported Cruz throughout the run-off campaign. Early on before all the state s precincts were counted, Dewhurst conceded the race to Cruz. Even before the final precinct tally was complete incumbent Senator Jeff Wentworth cried uncle and gave up his State District 25 seat to emergency room physician Donna Campbell, who will fight Democrat John Courage in November. Wentworth told supporters and La Prensa at Chester s Hamburgers on Loop 410 that he is grateful, and hopes the Texas Legislature and state legislatures across the country will take the power back to the people. The power belongs to the people in the states, he said. The 19 year incumbent Senator was surprised at the stunning defeat. Campbell won in a landslide in Tuesday s runoff, getting more than 60 percent of the vote in Bexar County after coming in second in the primary on May 31 in a district that extends from south Austin to San Antonio along I-35. It appeared the writing was on the wall as Campbell won the early vote in all the Dist. 25 counties. Like Ted Cruz, Campbell was backed by the Tea Party which supports balanced budgets, smaller government and reduced government spending. When asked what s next Wentworth smiled. I m going to spend a lot more time with my best friend. We might do some traveling, he said. Apparently Pete Gallego has defeated former U.S. Rep. Ciro Rodriguez, and will take on incumbent Quico Canseco for the 23rd Congressional District in November. Earlier, La Prensa went one-on-one with Gallego at his Southwest Bexar County headquarters. Sabemos que muchas personas trabajan durante el día, y otras tienen cientos de actividades que no les permiten ver sus competidores y deportes favoritos. Debido a esto, Fernando Escudero, experto en redes sociales y editor de Avon y About.com, explica cómo puede mantenerse al tanto de lo que pasa en las Olimpiadas cada día a través de la avanzada tecnología que tenemos ahora a la mano. En About.com tenemos una guía en español en donde se pueden ver las aplicaciones para checar constantemente los resultados de los juegos olímpicos, detalló Escudero. Estas aplicaciones pueden ser bajadas en los celulares o en plataformas sociales como Facebook y Twitter, añadió. A principios de esta semana, Nelson Wolff, juez del Condado de Bexar, convocó a una conferencia de prensa para dar a conocer a la ciudadanía que estos sistemas hospitalarios ya están preparados para recibir pacientes. Queremos asegurarle a la gente que vive ahora y los que vivirán en el futuro en el centro de la cuidad que tienen y tendrán opciones médicas dijo Wolff. En la convocatoria también estuvo presente el Dr. Craig Manifold, chairman del STRAC EMS Medical Directors Committee. University Health System, Baptist Health System y Methodist Healthcare se han estado preparando desde que CHRISTUS Santa Rosa City- Centre anunció la suspensión de servicios médicos para adultos con motivo de transformarse en Hospital de Niños de San Antonio. Pérez rperesz@laprensasa.com Una nueva tienda de Walmart empezará a construirse en breve en la esquina de Nacogdoches y Thousand Oaks. Dado a la numerosa comunidad residente en ese rumbo de la ciudad, el supermercado será una nueva opción para comprar a precios competitivos toda la extensa línea de productos que caracterizan a los establecimientos de esta cadena. Julie Martin, directora regional de Walmart, anunció ayer en el centro comercial- que la nueva tienda se construirá sobre una superficie de 150 mil pies cuadrados. Y que el edificio seguirá el modelo de los nuevos establecimientos Walmart que incluyen instalaciones que aho rran energía y reducen el consumo de agua. El proyecto, ubicado en una intersección que permite el fácil acceso vial, quedará terminado para finales del 2013 dando oportunidad de trabajo a un promedio de 300 empleados de la localidad. La directora regional de Walmart expresó que los clientes son el centro de todo lo que hace la compañía a lo largo de Norteamérica y San Antonio. During the campaign, Gallego also said that the race is about electing a congressman who will stand up for the middle class, not one who will be attacking Medicare and Social Security. On the other side, Rodriguez talked about the importance of Social Security, Medicare and veterans during his campaign. We need to protect our veterans, the importance of Social Security and Medicare, Rodriguez mentioned. We also need to make sure that our children have better opportunities than what we have. In the race, Rodriguez won over state lawmaker Pete Gallego with 59 percent of the vote in Bexar County. Keep in mind that the 23rd is made up of 29 counties that runs from Bexar County s Southside to El Paso County, an area in which Gallego is well-known and has represented while in the Texas Legislature and as of this writing Gallego was ahead of Rodriguez in the others counties of the 23rd District. In other Democratic runoff races, it appears that incumbent Amadeo Ortiz will take on Republican Susan Pamerleau in November. Ortiz who is in his first term fought off a handful of challengers, in The May primary. Ortiz garnered 65 percent. Ortiz held his Election Watch Party at the Stockyard Saloon as friends and family came to offer their support. Throughout the evening all eyes were on the big screen above the dance hall as election results trickled in. The first preliminary results were met with loud applause and cheers when supporters learned Ortiz was ahead 65 to 35. We work really hard, and we were prepared, Ortiz replied when asked about the good news. I am really, really happy. Gratitude went hand in hand with all of Ortiz s statements, and he gave one final message to show his appreciation. I just want to thank the people and the trust they have in me for voting for, and it s indicative that 65 percent of the people that are voting on the democratic side think I m doing a good job. That s wonderful! The same, however, couldn t be said for challenger Andy Lopez. Big Lou s Pizza was home to the Andy Lopez Election Watch Party. The atmosphere was very laid back with drinks, talk and a very large delicious pizza. As the night went on everyone anxiously was watching the big screen to see what percent of the vote was in and to see if Lopez was ahead or behind in votes. In the beginning of the evening Lopez looked very calm and said he was feeling good and appeared relived. (I m) glad it s all over and if we win then we start in September and if we don t win we resume with life. As the night went on and the pizza was gone it appeared that the Lopez campaign was over and he did not get the results they had hoped for. His response wasn t out of the ordinary. I feel fine. We knew it was going to be a hard road. The one thing Lopez wants people to remember is to get out there and vote because that is where the difference is made. Lopez also congratulated Amadeo Ortiz on his win, saying he ll do a fine job. Phillip Cortez will go against GOP St. Rep. John Garza for Dist He was in a runoff with attorney Tina Torres. Torres went into the runoff just one percentage point behind Cortez and even got the support of the Ken Mireles, the third place candidate in that threeway race. In the end, however, it wasn t enough as Cortez racked up the early vote results and ended up 57 percent of the vote. The race to take over the post of Bexar County Tax Assessor- Collector in the Democratic Party will be in the hands of Albert Uresti, brother of State Senator Carlos Uresti. The race appeared to never be in question as Uresti took a commanding lead on the onset and finished with almost 60 percent of the vote. Uresti will face GOP winner Robert Stovall in November. At publication time neither of the losing candidates returned our calls. Invitees included College Station and Galveston incoming freshman, transfer students and their parents. Guests were invited to a barbecue by Aggie Dads, and to an exchange of information. Student leaders introduced various campus organizations while the club hosted guest speakers Rusty Burson, author of What It Means to be an Aggie, Student Body President at College Station, John Claybook and Paul Puasky from the Career Center. The Prospective Student Center, Aggieland Federal Credit Union, and Bed Bath and Beyond donated fabulous prizes including two book scholarships. A new intercity bus service might be just the ticket to get away. Just last week, I went to Austin to cover a story and the roundtrip for the Suburban in gas alone cost 80. Wish I had known about Megabus.com By Angela Covo Angela.covo@gmail.com This summer, there may be no need for a staycation when you can get around Texas and beyond for fares as cheap as a dollar. A company recently introduced double-decker bus service with free Wi-Fi and fares from 1 between several Texas cities and the service is already popular on the east coast. In June, they expanded to include Texas and the southern United States. Texans can now travel to five cities including Austin, Dallas, San Antonio and Houston as well as Norman, OK, Memphis, Little Rock and New Orleans for as little as a buck. And the bright green colorful buses are brand new, clean, well-kept and energy efficient. Jonatan Alcon, a student visiting San Antonio from Spain, used the service earlier this week to visit a friend at North Texas University near Dallas. He told La Prensa he would use the service again and happily recommends it. It was clean and comfortable and I got to Dallas in just over five hours, he explained. The young man sat at the front on the upper level of the bus and paid 8.50 for the ride which he booked online just hours before boarding. I was able to use the internet, watch a movie on my computer and the time passed quickly, Alcon added. I could see everything from where I was sitting, too. Marcus Williams, a manager in the San Antonio area, explained the fares are cheap because the company keeps overhead low. We don t have bus stations and the fuel costs are low because the buses are green and state-of-the-art, he said. The environmentally-friendly buses also have free Wi-Fi, power outlets and restrooms for passengers. It s best to book online before you travel but if you must, you can pay the going rate at the pick up point by credit or debit card (the agents can t take cash). The earlier you book, the better chance you ll have at getting the 1 fare. According to a company press release, fares always start as low as 1 and get higher as the traveling date gets closer. Customers are encouraged to book early to secure 1 fares. (viene de la página 8) funciones como CHRISTUS Santa Rosa, y de traspaso de funciones al nuevo Hospital de Niños de San Antonio (San Antonio Children Hospital), que empezará a operar dentro de 24 meses. Después de un servicio religioso en la capilla St. John, los empleados del hospital tuvieron un convivio con música de mariachi y comida para clausurar funciones, celebrar la historia de servicios a la comunidad del hospital y entrar a una nueva etapa. En el evento estuvieron presentes las Hermanas de la Caridad de Incarnate Word. Ellas fueron quienes establecieron CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Sistema de Salud en Por esta razón, Patrick Carrier, el Presidente/CEO de CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Sistema de Salud, entregó a cada una de las Hermanas de la Caridad una moneda conmemorativa. En un lado, las monedas presentan la imagen del primer edificio de Santa Rosa, y en el otro, una imagen de City-Centre. Sin embargo, uno de los momentos que más conmovió a los presentes fue cuando se mostró el video titulado Milagro en la calle Santa Rosa. Este audiovisual mostró imágenes de los empleados de City Centre, sus historias de trabajo y vida en este hospital. También se rememoraron las raíces e historia de cómo comenzó la institución. La ceremonia concluyó con las palabras de Jerry Rodriguez, vicepresidente y administrador de CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Hospital- City Centre, quién entregó la llave a Marcy Doderer, vicepresidente y administradora de CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Hospital de Niños. Patrick Carrier explicó que el hospital se mantendrá abierto mientras se transforma en hospital de niños, lo cual tomará veintecuatro meses para que el proyecto se cumpla. Algunos empleados se retiran, otros serán transferidos a otros hospitales de Santa Rosa o serán transferidos a otros hospitales en el centro de la ciudad. Por su parte, la hermana Michele O Brien, RN MSN, expresó que la misión es la misma y me siento privilegiada de estar en este papel. O Brien afirmó tener sentimientos mezclados por todos los compañeros que ya no estarán juntos, pero cuando una puerta cierra otra se abre, añadió. Franco franco@laprensasa.com El jugar y practicar baloncesto es importante, porque los mantiene en buen estado de salud. Sin embargo, lo más importante y bueno para todos ustedes son sus estudios. Por lo que deben enfocarse en el aprendizaje leyendo libros y aprovechar todo tipo de lectura que les ayude en clases y en su formación personal, expresó Steve Shuman, entrenador asistente del equipo San Antonio Silver Stars, a los chiquillos asistentes a la clínica de baloncesto celebrada en la cancha del Melendrez Community Center. Shuman estuvo acompañado por la guardia Jia Perkins, y ambos fueron recibidos en el lugar por el popular locutor Sonny Melendrez, por quien lleva el nombre dicho centro comunitario y deportivo, ubicado en el 5909 West Commerce Street. Durante las vacaciones de verano, las Silver Stars, con algunas de sus jugadoras, han venido cumpliendo con sus programas al servicio de la comunidad, entre ellos clínicas de baloncesto infantil y adolescentes organizadas por Silver & Black Give Back (fundación caritativa de los Spurs), y el Kids Sports Network, que cuentan con el apoyo de la empresa financiera SWBC. El programa de baloncesto comunitario alcanzó la participación de más de 400 niñas, niños y adolescentes en las edades de 9 a 18 años de edad, a quienes se les impartieron sesiones de aprendizaje en el baloncesto y personales. El entrenador Shuman, antes de su participación en la clínica, explicó que las jugadoras de Silver Stars con motivo del intermedio de la liga WNBA se entrenan cada dos días, por uno de descanso, para no perder el ritmo de juego con el que han ganado 9 partidos consecutivos. De esta forma se mantienen en buena forma física y de juego para cuando reanuden acciones, que será con dos partidos en calidad de visitantes en las plazas de los equipos Shock de Tulsa. Este partido será el viernes 17 de agosto, y contra el Mercury de Phoenix el domingo 19. Retornarán al AT&T Center a jugar contra las visitantes Mystics de Washington el martes 21, encuentro pactado en el horario de las 7 p.m. Por su parte, la escolta reserva (la sexta jugadora de Silver Stars), Jia Perkins quien en su último partido contra el Dream de Atlanta logró su propia hazaña encestando 6 de 7 triples, invitó a varias jugadoras a mostrar sus habilidades aprendidas durante la clínica en el gimnasio del Melendrez Community Center. En breve veremos qué fue lo que aprendieron durante el tiempo que han estado actuando en la Junior Silver Stars Clinic. Las invito a que participen en disparos de corta y larga distancia al aro. Les recuerdo que venimos a darles nuestro apoyo y compartir nuestros conocimientos. El primer paso es que siempre escuchen lo que entrenadores les señalan por hacer. Segundo paso, ya en las aulas tienen que poner atención a lo que sus profesores les indiquen, y el tercer paso es que cada día aprendan más, leyendo libros de su preferencia, a todo ello súmenle los deportes que gusten practicar, tanto en la escuela como en su comunidad, apuntó Perkins. Entre los participantes, una pequeña cuestionó a Jia sobre la posición correcta para realizar disparos al aro en corta y larga distancia, a lo que Perkins contestó: Cuando haces tus disparos al aro siempre tienes que tener un buen balance de tu cuerpo y la forma correcta para efectuar tus tiros a la canasta. Durante partidos es un poco diferente, porque tienes rivales, que posiblemente obstruyan tu sistema de encestar, lo cual es parte del baloncesto, pero si tienen todo claro estoy segura que no fallaran en sus intentos por anotar. Por su parte, Sonny Melendrez dijo a La Prensa de San Antonio sentirse orgulloso de poder ver el benefició que dejó la presencia de Perkins y el entrenador Shuman. Este tipo de clínicas deportivas son de mucho valor para la comunidad del sector oeste, veo que los participantes aprendieron bastante, y a la vez disfrutaron de la visita de estas personalidades. Al comienzo de este centro que es operado por el departamento de recreación de San Antonio se contó con la asistencia del Almirante David Robinson, y de otras personalidades del deporte local. Para mí es todo un orgullo ver este tipo de eventos en este centro comunitario que sirve a un gran conglomerado del Westside, apuntó Melendrez. Las participantes en disparos al aro, recibieron boletos de admisión para los próximo partidos de Silver Stars a jugarse en el AT&T Center.
