3 European Geosciences Union GEOPHYSICAL INFORMATION FOR TEACHERS (GIFT) WORKSHOP Dear Teachers, Cusco, Peru November 15-16, 2012 Welcome to the Geosciences Information for Teachers (GIFT) workshop sponsored by European Geosciences Union and slightly by the Educational Association Edugea (France), and organized in close collaboration with the local Organizing Committee of the 8th Alexander von Humboldt conference! GIFT workshops have been organized in Europe in the last 10 years and have taken place during the General Assembly of EGU in Nice (France) and in Vienna (Austria). But it is only more recently that GIFT workshops have been organized in different nations, taking advantage of the scientists and organization participating to the Alexander von Humboldt conference. This workshop in Cusco is the 3rd of the kind, after those of Merida (Mexico) and Penang (Malaysia). You can find complete information about all these previous GIFT workshops on our web page (http://www.egu.eu/outreach/gift/workshops/). Please notice that in the last 3 years we have also developed videos of selected conferences at the GIFT workshops. These conferences can be directly used, free of charge, in your classrooms. They are in English, so that they can help you in introducing your pupils to the language of Earth Science, which is largely English in our modern world. In the two days of this workshop, we ll have the time to present and discuss only some of the different themes of those discussed in the Alexander von Humboldt conference which is taking place in concomitance here in Cusco: first some talks will address the geological aspects of the Andean cordillera, including recent deformation., both using the technique of paleomagnetism and with a special presentation of classroom activities. The use of satellite observation in assessing potential natural hazards, such as landslides volcanic risks will be addressed by a specialist from the European Space Agency (ESA). Volcanic and seismic risk will be examined by known specialists in Peru and with a session of small experiments to be conducted in the classroom, developed by different teachers in France. Finally, the question of the role of geology in the conservation of Machu Picchu world Heritage will be the object of a special conference. Please don t be shy in asking questions to the scientists addressing you! Showing your interest in the different presentations by asking questions is the best way to thank these scientists who have taken time to prepare their conference especially for you.

14 Pierrick Roperch Directeur de Recherche Institut de Recherche pour le Développement Now at CNRS Géosciences Rennes Université de Rennes 1 France Pierrick Roperch received his PhD in Earth Sciences from Université de Rennes 1. He has been a Research Scientist at the Institut de Recherche pour le Développement (IRD, former ORSTOM) since From 1995 to 2003, He was working in a cooperation project between IRD and the department of Geology of the Universidad de Chile in Santiago. From 1997 to 2003, He also served as IRD Representative in Chile. His main research areas are in paleomagnetism with applications to Geomagnetism, Tectonics and Volcanism. After a PhD focused on the behavior of the Earth s Magnetic Field during excursions and polarity reversals, Pierrick has been working during the last three years on the secular variation of the Earth s Magnetic Field during the Holocene in South America. In 1985, he participated in a project with Carlo Laj and François Mégard to study tectonic rotations in the Andes of Northern Peru and Ecuador. Since 1988, He has been working in the Andes of Bolivia, Peru, Argentina and Chile. During his stay in Chile, he installed a paleomagnetic laboratory with several research projects with Chilean colleagues. From 2006, He has been mainly working in the Andes of Southern Peru in a joint project with Dr. Victor Carlotto from the Peruvian Geological Service. Pierrick Roperch recibió su doctorado en Ciencias de la Tierra de la Universidad de Rennes 1. Ha sido investigador en el Institut de Recherche pour le Développement (IRD, ex ORSTOM) desde De 1995 a 2003, trabajó en un proyecto de cooperación entre el IRD y el departamento de Geología de la "Universidad de Chile" en Santiago. Después de su doctorado acerca del comportamiento del campo magnético de la Tierra durante las excursiones y las inversiones de polaridad, Pierrick ha estado trabajando durante los últimos tres años en la variación secular del campo magnético de la Tierra durante el Holoceno en América del Sur. 16 Tectonic rotations in the Andes Pierrick Roperch Géosciences Rennes Université de Rennes France Paleomagnetism is the study of magnetic properties of rocks and mainly that of their remanent magnetization. Most rocks have indeed the property to record the Earth's magnetic field direction whatsoever, for example during the cooling of volcanic flows or of sédiment deposition. It is this property that made paleomagnetism one of the main discipline shaping the theory of plate tectonics. Continental drift has been quantified by the drift virtual geomagnetic poles (polar wander). Seafloor spreading was discovered thanks to the magnetic anomalies associated with polarity reversals of the Earth's magnetic field and recorded in basaltic rocks of the oceanic crust. After contributing to the knowledge of continental drift, paleomagnetism was then used to quantify the deformation and tectonic rotations mainly in mountain ranges. In this presentation I will summarize evidences of tectonic rotations in the Andes. Following the pioneering works in the eighties by teams led by well-known paleomagnetists (Masaru Kono, Robert Butler, Myrl Beck, Carlo Laj), the addition of new data has enabled a better understanding of the magnitude, timing and origin of these rotations. The Andes is a mountain range with the Altiplano-Puna plateau being the second largest high plateau after the Tibetan plateau. However, while the Himalayan range is due to the collision of India with Eurasia, the Andes are not formed by continental collision but by the subduction of oceanic crust beneath the South American continent. Along the Andes, blocks of oceanic origin are observed only along the Ecuadorian and Colombian margin. These blocks Folded Eocene red beds to the west of Cusco (Peru). The Central Andes show a marked curvature at Arica (Northern Chile) often referred to as the Bolivian orocline. In northern Chile and Argentina, tectonic structures (folds, faults) are oriented NS or NE-SW while a NW-SE direction is observed in the Andes of southern Peru and Bolivia. Is this change in orientation of the Andean margin acquired before the formation of the Andes

17 or is-it the result of deformation and bending of the Central Andes? Tectonic rotations in southern Peru. (from Roperch et al., 2011)/ Rotaciones tectonicas en el sur del Perú. Paleomagnetic results obtained in the Central Andes demonstrate systematic counterclockwise rotations in the Andes of southern Peru (20 to 60 ) and northern Bolivia. In northern Chile, no rotation is observed between the latitudes of Arica and Iquique. Clockwise rotations are observed south of Antofagasta. These rotations are found in rocks of Mesozoic or Paleogene age. Rotations recorded in Miocene Rocks are in most cases of low amplitude. Paleomagnetism shows therefore a major structuration of the Central Andes between the late Eocene and Oligocene. 18 El paleomagnetismo es el estudio de las propiedades magnéticas de las rocas y sobre todo la de su magnetización remanente. La mayoría de las rocas tienen de hecho la propiedad de registrar la dirección del campo magnético terrestre, por ejemplo, durante el enfriamiento de las coladas volcánicas o la deposición de sedimentos. Esta propiedad hizo del paleomagnetismo la disciplina principal de base a la teoría de la tectónica de placas. La deriva de los continentes ha sido cuantificada por la deriva de los polos geomagnéticos virtuales. La expansión del fondo oceánico fue descubierto gracias a las anomalías magnéticas asociadas con inversiones de polaridad del campo magnético de la Tierra y registradas en las rocas basálticas de la corteza oceánica. Después de contribuir al conocimiento de la deriva continental, el paleomagnetismo se utilizó para cuantificar las rotaciones tectónicas en zonas de deformación, por ejemplo en las cordilleras. En esta presentación voy a resumir las evidencias de rotaciones tectónicas en los Andes. Siguiendo los trabajos pioneros en los años ochenta de los equipos dirigidos por conocidos paleomagnetistas (Masaru Kono, Robert Butler, Myrl Beck, Carlo Laj), la adición de nuevos datos ha permitido una mejor comprensión de la magnitud, el momento y el origen de estas rotaciones. La Cordillera de los Andes comprende el Altiplano-Puna que es la segunda más grande altiplanicie después de la meseta tibetana. Sin embargo, mientras que la cordillera del Himalaya se debe a la colisión de la India con Eurasia, los Andes no se forman por la colisión continental, sino por la subducción de la corteza oceánica por debajo del continente sudamericano. A lo largo de los Andes, los bloques de origen oceánico sólo se observan a lo largo del margen de Ecuador y Colombia. Estos bloques registran grandes rotaciones, mientras están aglomerados al continente. Los Andes Centrales muestran una curvatura marcada en Arica (norte de Chile), a menudo referido como el oroclino boliviano. En el norte de Chile y Argentina, estructuras tectónicas (pliegues, fallas) están orientadas NS o NE-SW, mientras que una dirección NW- SE se observa en los Andes del sur del Perú y Bolivia. Este cambio de orientación del margen Andino es adquirido antes de la formación de los Andes, o es el resultado de la deformación y flexión de los Andes Centrales? Resultados paleomagnéticos obtenidos en los Andes Centrales demuestran rotaciones sistemáticas en sentido antihorario en los Andes del sur del Perú (20 a 60 ) y en el norte de Bolivia. En el norte de Chile, no se observa rotación entre las latitudes de Arica e Iquique. Las rotaciones horarias se observan al sur de Antofagasta. Estas rotaciones se encuentran en rocas de edad Mesozoica o Paleógeno. Las rotaciones registradas en rocas del Mioceno son de baja amplitud en la mayoría de los casos. 21 Application of Earth observation techniques for the monitoring of natural disasters, global change and the preservation of world heritage sites, using educational tools developed by the European Space Agency Chris Stewart Remote Sensing Project Scientist European Space Agency, Earth Observation Programmes (ESA EOP) During the GIFT 2012 workshop training sessions will be provided by the European Space Agency (ESA) on the monitoring of disasters using satellite Earth observation (EO) data. A first presentation will outline the main EO techniques applied for the monitoring of different types of disaster, together with their strengths and limitations. Some of these techniques will then be demonstrated through practical sessions, in which processing will be undertaken to map the extent of areas affected by disasters. The satellite image processing software used in these practical sessions will include free and open source developed for ESA. The data used in the practical sessions will mainly include ESA data, in particular ASAR (Advanced Synthetic Aperture Radar), MERIS (Medium Resolution Imaging Spectrometer) and AATSR (Advanced Along Track Scanning Radiometer) - all sensors from the former Envisat satellite. The disasters monitored during the practical sessions will include storm surges, floods, active fires, burnt areas and oil slicks. During the demonstrations, case studies of disaster monitoring will be taken from the Eduspace website Eduspace aims to provide secondary school students and teachers with a learning and teaching tool. It is meant to be an entry point for space image data, and, in particular, to a widespread visibility of EO applications for education and training. The Eduspace website encourages teachers to use EO data in their curriculum by providing ready- made projects. It is rich in didactical material, especially in local and global remote sensing satellite data. It is a source of ideas about how to introduce space- related matters into the classroom, where full scale examples are also presented. If time permits, other freely available educational material will be presented related to the application of EO to disaster monitoring. It is hoped that by the end of the training, participants will have a better awareness of the potential and limitations of satellite EO for the monitoring of disasters, more understanding of remote sensing and satellite image processing techniques in general, and a familiarity with the tools and resources freely provided by ESA to teach these techniques and concepts in the classroom.
