2 Clearly, the question of the challenge of globalization for the mission of Jesuit higher education needs to be answered by each institution, in its unique social, cultural, and religious circumstances. But I wish to emphasize that it is also a question that calls for a common and universal response, drawn of course from your diverse cultural perspectives, from Jesuit higher education as a whole, as an apostolic sector. ADOLFO NICOLÁS, S.J. Superior General
3 WELCOME EXPANDING THE JESUIT HIGHER EDUCATION NETWORK COLLABORATIONS FOR SOCIAL JUSTICE I am delighted to welcome you to the July 2015 Melbourne conference. This meeting, which follows on the conversations we had in Mexico City in 2010, is focused on Expanding the Jesuit Higher Education Network: Collaborations for Social Justice. This week we look forward to a series of discussions and presentations designed to highlight current collaborative projects taking place around the world, and to brainstorm both regionally and as a group about future opportunities. We will also see a newly-created video on Social Justice and the Jesuit University which includes an interview with Father General Adolfo Nicolás. This book includes background reading, project descriptions, speaker biographies and additional information related to our conference. I want to express my deepest gratitude to everyone at Australian Catholic University for hosting us this week and for partnering with us in organizing this global effort. I am also grateful to our colleagues at the University of Melbourne and at Newman College for generously welcoming us on their campuses for evening receptions as well as mass on Wednesday night. I hope and trust our time together will be fruitful and inspiring. AMDG, Michael J. Garanzini, S.J. Secretary for Higher Education, Society of Jesus 3

12 ANNOUNCEMENT UPCOMING CONFERENCE International Congress on Religious Tourism and Jesuit Heritage Manresa and Barcelona, Spain June 20 23, 2016 Join us in the Ignatian city of Manresa where Ignatius of Loyola experienced his biggest illumination for the first International Congress on Religious Tourism and Jesuit Heritage. The Congress will explore the fascinating 500-year-old Jesuit Heritage and the links with the huge development of tourism experienced over the last century. Bringing together heritage and tourism, we anticipate that there will be speakers and delegates from many countries, professions, communities and academic fields. By merging their knowledge and experience, we will identify the challenges that confront us, develop strategies with regards to making the right choices and achieve a positive outcome for all. The benefits of religious tourism have been widely documented and this congress will highlight the importance of an integrated approach that uses Jesuit Heritage and Religious Tourism to improve the human condition, transform spaces and boost the economy. A warm and cordial invitation is extended to all presenters and delegates to explore and reflect on the proposed subject. The Congress represents a real opportunity to hold discussions, present debates and share opinions in order to build an international research community about Religious Tourism and Heritage, as well as a network of professionals to preserve the present Jesuit heritage and pass it on to future generations by means of tourism. The conference will explore these themes: Heritage, Religious tourism and Technology Management of religious tourism destinations Design of products and experiences of spiritual and religious tourism Pilgrimage Routes Heritage, spirituality and personal growth Information: 12 EXPANDING THE JESUIT HIGHER EDUCATION NETWORK: COLLABORATIONS FOR SOCIAL JUSTICE

16 SPEAKERS WEDNESDAY, JULY 8 1:30 p.m. SESSION TWO BEST PRACTICES IN FACULTY DEVELOPMENT FOR MISSION The presentation will give a brief explanation of statutory reform regarding the governance of the schools, which sparked an internal debate and generated deep concerns about the impact it might have on the identity of the University. These concerns were shared by members of the community, the Jesuit Curia, and the Congregation for Catholic Education in Rome. At this time, the university community recognizes that what was considered a threat has become a great opportunity to work in depth on a central theme of our university life. Through the presentation, participants will understand how professors from each of the schools participate in the formulation of challenges that the department will face in years to come; elements that arise in this dialogue between the Rector and faculty constitute important input that will be expressed in the letter of appointment. Also included are the deliberations of the Board where initial candidates are analyzed, a short list is drawn up and with that a Rector is chosen. The letter of appointment is the result of a rich collective construction (contributions of faculty and the University Board), and is the roadmap to manage the coming years. Fr. 18 THURSDAY, JULY 9 Our Social Justice Mission 8:30 a.m. SESSION FOUR TRANSFORM THINKING TRANSFORM THE WORLD: JESUIT COMMONS: HIGHER EDUCATION AT THE MARGINS Today over 51 million people experience forced human migration, often living in isolation without access to higher education (UNHCR). This means the world is denied the informed voices of many. Jesuit Commons: Higher Education at the Margins (JC:HEM), an initiative of the Society of Jesus, exists so those who live at the margins where they are unserved or underserved by higher education, can gain access. As a collaborative-integrative organization, JC:HEM benefits from the collective wisdom of the Jesuit network. In this presentation panelists will bring to life what it means to collaborate across geographic boundaries, to bridge Universities, on-site partners and students at the margins. A candid discussion will address the benefits, the joys, and the challenges of collaboration and of navigating the network. The panel perspective will be multifaceted and includes the view of on-site partners, addressed by Jesuit Refugee Service, the view of Universities addressed by Regis University, and the view of JC:HEM, including reflections from students, site coordinators, and faculty. The following April, he was appointed regional director of the new JRS Southern Africa Region. In this period, Mozambican refugees were starting to return home from Malawi and JRS was involved in assisting the repatriation process. 18 EXPANDING THE JESUIT HIGHER EDUCATION NETWORK: COLLABORATIONS FOR SOCIAL JUSTICE
