6 Enlarged City School District of Middletown calendar Food Service: Eating healthy every day Middletown s daily menu enables children to make healthy choices. Boar s Head cold cuts are available, along with allwhite meat chicken filets and tenders, whole grain breads, rolls and wraps. Other options include fresh fruits and vegetables, salads and nutritional snacks. Middletown High School has a fullservice salad bar. Monthly menus are sent home and available at Charging policy: Elementary school students may charge up to three meals. After the first charged lunch, a payment slip will be sent home with the student. If a student accumulates three charges, another slip will be sent home. The next time, the student will be offered an alternate meal of the district s choice. Alternate meals will be offered until the student s account is paid, and are charged to the student s account. Secondary students may not charge meals, but will be offered an alternate meal. Children who qualify for free/reduced lunch also qualify for free breakfast. Call (845) for more information. The board establishes policy, provides the budget and hires the Superintendent of Schools. Each elected member serves a three-year term. Park (845) (K-2); (3-5) Academics: High expectations with real opportunities Middletown is in the third year of a four-year Race to the Top- District grant, which provides our students tremendous educational opportunities. The district s rigorous curriculum challenges students, and pushes them to be college and career ready. All programs meet New York state standards and requirements, and follow the district s specific scope and sequence. Students have many choices, aside from taking core courses. Classes are available in music, art and technology. Middletown offers National Academy Foundation programs, as well as Project Lead the Way: Biomedical and Engineering. Our College and Career Center helps our high school students chart their post-high school path. There s no need to wait for college to take college classes. Students can attend Syracuse University from MHS, with a chance to earn more than 50 college credits. Student registration information: All new students register through the central registration office, located at 223 Wisner Ave., Middletown. Two-way dual language education: The two-way dual language program is in its sixth year, and its students will attend Maple Hill. Two languages for instruction are used for all students. The goal is to develop high levels of literacy in both languages, with academic performance in both languages at - or above - grade level. We encourage students to demonstrate positive crosscultured attitudes and behaviors. They use each language on alternating days. An A day is English instruction. A B day is Spanish instruction. We provide engaging, mediarich facilities and data to achieve student growth, while preparing every student to become college and career ready. The district used data analytics and developed a four-year, $12 million technology initiative - which placed Middletown among the top 5 percent in the nation. Park (845) (K-2); (3-5) Fine Arts: Enhancing education Children can unleash their creativity in our music and visual arts programs, through quality instruction, electives and after-school activities. They perform and have work on display in front of large and appreciative audiences. Some students emerge as some of the county, state and nation s best. Students in grades K-5 receive weekly music and art classes from certified teachers, enabling kids to develop their interest and appreciation. Children explore music of different styles and cultures through a variety of extracurricular groups like marching band, percussion ensemble, steel drums and pipe and drums. Orchestra is available beginning in third grade, band beginning in fourth grade. Sixthgraders can learn guitar skills, while seventh-graders learn piano (keyboard). The Middletown Arts Institute is part of the high school s academy program and includes fine arts, music and dance. Students can perform music - vocally or instrumentally - at NYSSMA festivals, where they are judged and given feedback by professional judges. Hundreds of art students in grades 7-12 have been recognized at the annual Scholastic Art Awards, a regional competition based at SUNY New Paltz. Arts in Education programs raise student achievement and narrow the gap in student performance. Our kids participate with professional artists, writers and poets.
