Linear, quadratic, polynomial and rational functions are algebraic functions. These are expressed using algebraic operations. Trascendental functions on the contrary are expressed in terms of non-algebraic definitions. The exponential, logarithmic and trigonometric functions are transcendental. Definition: The exponential function has the form y = a x, where a>0, and a 1. Ejemplos (Examples): F(x) = 2 x F(x) = (½) x = (2-1 ) x = 2 -x
Note: When (the base) a > 1 then the exponential funtion is increasing, such as f(x) = 2 x. Otherwise when a < 1, the exponential function is decreasing, such as f(x) = 2 -x. (The value of y is very close to zero, but is never zero, when x is NEGATIVE) 4) Todas las funciones intersecan al eje y en el punto (0,1). (All exponential functions intercept the y-axis at (0,1)) 5) Son funciones continuas. (They are continuous functions) Algunas características de las funciones exponenciales decrecientes: (Characteristics of decreasing exponential functions) 1) El dominio es el conjunto de los números reales. Domain is all Real Numbers) 2) El recorrido es el conjunto de los números reales positivos. (Range = (0, ), i.e. all positive real numbers) 3) El valor de y se acerca a cero pero nunca será cero, cuando x toma valores positivos. (The value of y is very close to zero, but is never zero, when x is POSITIVE)
(All exponential functions intercept the y-axis at (0,1)) 5) Son funciones continuas. (They are continuous functions) Ya sabes calcular y = a x (función exponencial) para todo número real x. You know how to compute y = a x (exponential function) for any real number x. We know want to proceed inversely. One we start with y, how can we find x? For example: if 8 = 2 x, what is the value of x? ; if 100 = 10 x. what is the value of x? Solutions of exponential equations are not always so evident. Definition: The logarithm of a number y is the exponent such that as you raise the base a you obtain y. That is, if a > 0 y a 1 then logay = x if and only if y = a x. Note: The equation logay = x is read "the base a logarithm of y is x".
What is the exponent such that 5 base will give you 25? The exponent 2, because 5 2 = 25. We say "the logarithm of 25 base 5 is 2". The notation is log5 25 = 2. So log5 25 = 2 is equivalent to 5 2 =25. 2) También podemos decir que 2 3 = 8 es equivalente a log2 8 = 3. We say that 2 3 = 8 is equivalent to log2 8 = 3. (Solving simple logarithmic equations, solve for x or y.) 1) log3 9 = x 2) loga 8 = 3 3) log2 y = 7 Propiedades de logaritmos comunes: Para a > 1 Properties of common logarithms: For a > 1 1) loga 1 = 0 2) loga a = 1 3) loga (u v) = loga u + loga v 5) loga (u n ) = n loga u 6) loga M = loga N, entonces M = N Ejemplos para discusión, Resuelve para x (Examples for discussion, solve for x): 1) log2 x - log2 (x - 8) = 3 2) log8 3 + ½ log8 25 = log8 x
Ejercicio de práctica: Resuelve log4 (x + 1) - log4 (3x - 2) = 2. Practice Exercises: Solve: log4 (x + 1) - log4 (3x - 2) = 2. Se puede obtener para valores grandes de n usando la fórmula de interés compuesto: (1 + 1 n )n ) The base a in y = a x can be any real positive number (by definition of the exponential function). Therefore we can use an important irrational numbero as the base e = (e was first used to compute continuously compounding interest in finances. It can be computed for big values of n using the formula used in compound interest: (1 + 1 n )n ) La función f(x) = e x se conoce como la función exponencial natural. La gráfica de esta función es: (The function f(x) = e x is known as the natural exponencial function. The graph is: ) f(x) = e x Logaritmo natural: (Natural Logarithm)
We can also have logarithms with base e. These are called natural logarithms. The notation used for loge( ) is ln. Therefore, if y = e x, then x = loge y = ln y. En particular: (The Natural logarithm has all the properties of logarithms with general base a. In particular:) 1) ln (u v) = ln (u) + ln (v) 3) ln u n = n ln u 4) ln e = 1 5) ln 1 = 0 Ejemplos para discusión: ( Examples to discuss:) 1) Usa las propiedades de los logaritmos para escribir las siguientes expresiones como una suma, diferencia o múltiplo de logaritmos: (Use the logarithmic properties to re-write the following expressions as addition, diference o product of logarithms: ) 2) Usa las propiedades de los logaritmos para escribir las siguientes expresiones como el logaritmo de una sola cantidad:
Ejercicios: (Exercises) Escribe cada ecuación exponencial a la forma logarítmica y viceversa: Write each exponential equation in logarithmic form and vice-versa: 1) 2 3 = 8 4) log = -2 5) ln 2 = ) ln 0.5 = Halla el valor de x: (Find x) 7) log = x 9) log3 x = -1 10) logx 27 = 3 12) log3 x + log3 (x - 2) = 1 13) x - 3 = log ) x 2 - x = log5 25 Dibuja la gráfica de: (Draw the graphs of:) 15) f(x) = 3 x
