1 NOVEMBER 9, 2008 DEDICATION OF THE LATERAN BASILICA IN ROME 2699 Peachtree Road N.E. Atlanta, Georgia To Know, Love and Serve as Jesus Did. Monsignor Thomas Kenny September 22, 1939 to October 30, 2008 Ordained to the Priesthood, June 20, 1965 To live in the midst of the world without wishing its pleasures; to be a member of each family, yet belonging to none; to share all sufferings; to penetrate all secrets; to heal all wounds; to go from men to God and offer Him their prayers; to return from God to men to bring pardon and hope; to have a heart of fire for charity and a heart of bronze for chastity; to teach and to pardon, console and bless always what a glorious life! And it is yours, O priest of Jesus Christ! Lacordaire Monsignor Thomas Kenny Our beloved pastor, Monsignor Thomas Kenny, died peacefully in his sleep during the early morning hours of October 30. His love for this parish family and for the Cathedral would allow no other leaving except to follow his God who called him home. Monsignor was a man of brilliance wrapped in the virtue of humility. Never seeking the limelight, his presence among us was magnetic; his holiness, his vision, his wit, his genuine caring moved us to seek his presence and his counsel. This parish family energized him as he moved up and down the church aisles before the weekend Masses. His hands reached out to all the children, many of whom he baptized, the elderly whom he had known for years and the newcomers whose names and faces he filed away and could recall at a moment s notice. His greatest gifts were his charisms of priesthood to serve the people of God as a priest forever. Perhaps he excelled most when working with families who had just lost a loved one. In meetings before the funeral, Monsignor, using his disarming Irish brogue, would engage the family in conversation about their loved one. As they spoke, he quietly scribbled in his illegible handwriting. Later, as he preached the funeral homily, he skillfully wove the family s memories into his talk, wrapping them in scripture and presenting this great gift to the grieving family. Monsignor loved to travel but sending him anywhere in a car, whether on a sick call or a day-off drive to the golf course, was an adventure. Neither computer maps nor navigation systems could keep him from getting lost. The straight and narrow of Atlanta streets made no sense to him nor did some of the golf fairways he tackled. Monsignor loved to golf. He enthusiastically played in many charity events, his last being the Christ the King School Golf tournament two days before he died. On one particular swing, his ball went wide left, bounced off a tree, hit the cart path and skidded on to the green, four feet from the hole. Luck of the Irish or divine intervention? We will never know - but he does. Monsignor s death leaves a tremendous hole in our hearts, in our parish and in our Archdiocese. His last eighteen years were spent with this parish family, carrying out his priestly duties with an abiding love for all. Monsignor often told those who were grieving that loved ones are not gone because they live on in our memories. We look to our memories now, to comfort and console us as we give back our dear pastor to the God he loved and served. O love that wilt not let me go, I rest my weary soul in Thee; I give Thee back the life I owe, That in Thine ocean depths its flow may richer, fuller be. (from a hymn stanza Monsignor Kenny often quoted) Archbishop Wilton Gregory has appointed Father Richard Morrow as Administrator to the Cathedral until which time a Pastor is appointed. Please keep Father Morrow in your prayers.

Questions, call Cristina Pastore at or Gifts of Appreciated Stock You may find that you can significantly increase the size of your gift to Christ the King parish at no additional cost to you by giving appreciated securities that you have owned for more than one year. All gifts of stock are valued at the average of the high and low price on the date they are deposited in the Cathedral s account. Electronic Transfer of Stock: Request that your broker transfer the stated number of shares electronically to Christ the King s account at Bear Stearns in Atlanta Christ the King s account number is A24 DTC number is 0352 Taxpayer ID number for the Cathedral is Please call the Finance Office, so that we may expect your gift and be sure you are credited with this transfer. Stewardship of Treasure As we pray today for an increase of spiritual gifts, we are reminded by the bishops pastoral on stewardship that good stewardship of the Church means cherishing and fostering the gifts of all, while using one s own gifts to serve the community of faith. The Blessing of Giving Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you. --Luke 6:38 God gave us His Word as an instruction manual for our good. In this text, we see that what we measure out to others will be measured back to us. If we give, it will be given to us. Conversely, if we don t give, it won t be given to us either. This goes against many of the popular opinions of the secular world where we are to do everything we can to get. These opinions do not acknowledge God as the source of all good things. Nor does it acknowledge God as a righteous judge who will punish evil. All good things come from God. This loving God, who owns everything, knows that through our own generosity, we will be blessed beyond our ability to contain the blessing. Satan has masterfully used the love of and competition for money. To many, the church is just another in the long line exhorting, me too! When the church gives the perception that it has it s hands out, it is often met with apathy and indifference to the delight of the evil one. Please pray for God to guide you in the biblical promise relating to giving and reveal to you where your generosity may best be used in His service and to build His Kingdom. No one with the slightest measure of integrity or honor could fail to know what these marvelous beings manifestly, clearly, and obviously are, as they smile and wave into the world outside the womb. In simplest terms, they are human beings with an inalienable right to live.they are not parts of their mothers, and what they are depends not at all upon the opinions of theologians of any faith. Anyone who dares to defend that they may be legitimately killed because another human being chooses to do so or for any other equally ridiculous reason should not be providing leadership in a civilized democracy worthy of the name. -- Cardinal Edward Egan, Archbishop of New York (Press release, August 26, 2008). 10
