1 21st Sunday in Ordinary Time XXI Domingo Ordinario Gospel Reading, John 6:60 69 Many of Jesus' disciples who were listening said, "This saying is hard; who can accept it?" Since Jesus knew that his disciples were murmuring about this, he said to them, "Does this shock you? What if you were to see the Son of Man ascending to where he was before? It is the spirit that gives life, while the flesh is of no avail. The words I have spoken to you are Spirit and life. But there are some of you who do not believe." Jesus knew from the beginning the ones who would not believe and the one who would betray him. And he said, "For this reason I have told you that no one can come to me unless it is granted him by my Father." As a result of this, many of his disciples returned to their former way of life and no longer accompanied him. Jesus then said to the Twelve, "Do you also want to leave?" Simon Peter answered him, "Master, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. We have come to believe and are convinced that you are the Holy One of God." I will be on vacation from August If you re like me, you are trying to get in the last bit of time away for the summer and also keeping one eye on September, which is coming sooner than any of us would like! One of my summer trips was to a conference in Denver called Amazing Parish. Deacon Sam and Lynette Basta and Esther Lucero-Miner attended with me. For nearly two days we heard one impressive presentation after the other, about what we can do in our parishes to make them truly amazing. In many ways St. Louise is already amazing in my mind so how can we build on what we have and use the best practices of other parishes throughout the country and beyond? We heard from the authors of two prominent books on parish life these days, Divine Renovation by Fr. James Mallon and Rebuilt by Fr. Michael White and Tom Corcoran. Both priests are active pastors and Tom Corcoran is a Pastoral Associate with Fr. White. The basic premise of Divine Renovation is that we must move our parishes from being maintenance- to missionoriented. This of course very much reflects Pope Francis hope when he says, I want a Church that goes out. Rebuilt makes the observation that we have built our parishes and schools for consumers, to meet the needs first of the huge waves of immigrants that came to this country from the later 19 th century well into the 20 th, and then of the post- WWII generation. While the Church responded to the needs of Catholics, it fell short of forming true disciples. We need to rebuild our parishes so that parish members will be transformed from consumers of spirituality and Church to being true disciples. These authors have common themes of how we can help parishes to be amazing. Think of the three Ms or the three Hs: Music/Hymns, Message/Homily and Ministers/Hospitality. Many things we heard at the conference related directly to the work of developing our Parish Strategic Plan. We were encouraged to choose one area and to make that one thing the main thing at our parish for a year. Those of us who attended From the Pastor Del Pastor Queridos Amigos: Estaré de vacaciones del 25 al 31 de agosto.

5 Faith Formation and Youth Ministry Mission Trip Youth Reflections Hi, my name is Miguel, and I was part of the AGAPE (Lynden) Mission Trip, and I just want to start out by saying thank you to all parishioners for all your donations and support. I am glad to say that everything donated will go to a good use, and that the migrants really appreciated it. One story I have to tell happened on Wednesday: we had our food bank, all the migrants came at different times throughout the day, and each of us trekkers had a station. As the families came and went, there was this one quiet little boy, and I asked him where his parents were so I could ask them if they wanted flour. This lady then intervened, introducing herself as his aunt, and told me that his parents couldn't make it because they were out there in the fields working, so they sent the boy with her to get food for their family. And then from behind her peeked another few kids who also came with her, and they watched as their aunt got flour and other things, and I just found it sad that the parents had to work so hard that they couldn't get out of work, and how they had to send their boy, not much older than six, to get food for their whole family. There was also another kid at Sunrise, the place where the migrant children lived, that explained to another person from AGAPE how there was no one else who did anything for them like what we were doing, and how he would miss us. My favorite, but also least favorite, part was saying goodbye. I liked it because we all quickly remembered the good times and the funny ones, but, it was also the saddest when our buddies hugged us and we all had to say goodbye. One of my buddies was Daniella, a shy girl who loved the tire swing, and who did her make-up with chalk (just on Thursday), who hugged me and said how she would miss me and how they would remember us, the AGAPE group. Two days later, all of our buddies and friends at Sunrise migrated to California. Thank you St. Louise for everything, they really appreciated it all.
