PRAYING PACEM IN TERRIS As we know from experience, men frequently differ widely in knowledge, virtue, intelligence and wealth, but that is no valid argument in favor of a system whereby those who are in a position of superiority impose their will arbitrarily on others. On the contrary, such men have a greater share in the common responsibility to help others to reach perfection by their mutual efforts. L ARCHE HOLIDAY PARTY Saturday, December 6 L'Arche is an international organization with Catholic roots with a mission to build community with people of all abilities. L Arche offers a unique place where adults with intellectual disabilities live alongside adults without intellectual disabilities, building relationships around prayer, conversation, and common activities. It hopes to help adults with intellectual disabilities live fully engaged lives within the larger community. One way this happens is through community social events, hosted by local churches, where anyone with or without disabilities can feel fully welcome. IHM's Young Married Couples are hosting L'Arche's Holiday Party in the parish hall on Saturday, December 6, 5:30-8:00 p.m. The entire IHM community is invited to join us in welcoming L Arche to IHM for a holiday potluck dinner, caroling, and cookie decorating! PARISH NEWS & EVENTS CHRISTMAS GIVING TREE November 22 - December 7 This Christmas you can brighten the holiday for a child who might not otherwise receive any gifts on Christmas morning. On Saturday, November 22, the annual Saint Vincent de Paul Christmas Giving Tree will be placed in the Narthex. The Giving Tree will remain in place until December 5 or until all of the tags have been taken. Each tag has the child's name, age, gender, clothing size, and wish list. Take one or more tags and see what you can do to make that child's wish come true at Christmas. Please return the gifts wrapped with giving tree tag firmly taped onto the package to the church by December 7. FR. 5 Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic School November 30, 2014 National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence 8th Grade student Tommy Kim was recently named a 2014 Jack Kent Cooke Young Scholar. The Jack Kent Cooke Foundation s scholarships are designed to encourage and support outstanding students from 7th grade through graduate school who have a breadth of interests, work hard, demonstrate a strong will to succeed, and have financial need. Their scholars come from 48 states plus the District of Columbia, and 38 countries. Tommy is a member of the National Junior Honor Society, The Pride of the Eagles Advanced Band, the Lector Ministry, the Boy Scouts, the St. Pius Youth Honor Band, the IHM Math Team, the IHM Basketball Team and the Korean Martyrs Catholic Church Altar Server Ministry. He participates in the Fernbank Fun Volunteer Program and the John s Hopkins Center for Talented Youth Summer Camp. He is the 1st chair percussionist in the Georgia Music Educators Association District Honor Band. In his spare time, Tommy enjoys playing golf. Our first grade students recently studied the phases of the moon during their science classes. Using Oreo cookies the very eager students were able to bite and scrape the cream centers of the cookies in order to form the correct shape for each moon phase. Together as a family, write what you will do each day to get ready for Jesus coming. Make a manger or an empty stable for the infant Jesus. Each evening during Advent, each member of the family tells one kind thing he or she has done that day to prepare for the coming of Jesus. Each places a straw in the manger for each good thing that he or she has done. As a family, make an Advent wreath. The Advent wreath is a circle of evergreens with four candles. Use a Styrofoam ring for the base. Hollow out four holes to fit the candles. Four candles identify the weeks of Advent: three are purple, for the long wait; one pink, for the third Sunday to express our joy that we are halfway through our Advent waiting. Discuss the following question with your family: What will it take for you to get ready to meet Christ at Christmas? Do not forget that the Faith Festival is a class that all students and parents are required to participate in. 7 FORMACION EN LA FE FIRST SUNDAY OF ADVENT Sunday Readings and Backgrounds Reading I : Isaiah 63:16b-17, 19b; 64:2-7 -We have not seen any God like you! The first reading was written after the Israelites returned from exile and resettled in Judah. The people were discouraged by widespread poverty, dissension among their leaders, and the overwhelming task of rebuilding the ruins. The prophet challenges the Israelites to persevere at their task. Reading II : 1 Corinthians 1:3-9 - He will strengthen you to the end. Paul s letter is addressed to the Corinthians, a people who have embraced Christianity with ardor. They compete with one another for the most evident signs of the spirit. Paul reminds the people that the most essential gift for their salvation is perseverance in faith. Gospel : Mark 13: Be constantly on guard! The author of Mark s Gospel wrote for a community greatly concerned with events of the end of time. Today s passage repeats two ideas. First, no one but God knows the time of the end. Second, the proper response of the faithful disciple is to watch and be ready at all times. Only those who persevere in watching will be saved. 8 ADVENT RESTORES THE HORIZON OF HOPE YOUTH MINISTRY Today, on the First Sunday of Advent, we begin a new liturgical year; that is, a new journey of the People of God with Jesus Christ, our Shepherd, who guides us through history toward the fulfillment of the Kingdom of God. Therefore, this day has a special charm, it makes us experience deeply the meaning of history. We rediscover the beauty of all being on a journey: the Church, with her vocation and mission, and all humanity, peoples, civilizations, cultures, all on a journey across the paths of time. But where are we journeying? Is there a common goal? And what is this goal? The Lord responds to us through the prophet Isaiah, saying: It shall come to pass in the latter days that the mountain of the house of the Lord shall be established as the highest of the mountains, and shall be raised above the hills; and all the nations shall flow to it, and many peoples shall come, and say: Come, let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, to the house of the God of Jacob; that he may teach us his ways and that we may walk in his paths (2:2-3). This journey never comes to an end. Just as in each of our lives we always need to begin again, to get up again, to rediscover the meaning of the goal of our lives, so also for the great human family it is always necessary to rediscover the common horizon toward which we are journeying. The horizon of hope! This is the horizon that makes for a good journey. The season of Advent, which we begin again today, restores this horizon of hope, a hope which does not disappoint for it is founded on God s Word. A hope which does not disappoint, simply because the Lord never disappoints! He is faithful! He does not disappoint! Let us think about and feel this beauty. The model of this spiritual disposition, of this way of being and journeying in life, is the Virgin Mary. A simple girl from the country who carries within her heart the fullness of hope in God! In her womb, God s hope took flesh, it became man, it became history: Jesus Christ. Her Magnificat is the canticle of the People of God on a journey, and of all men and women who hope in God and in the power of his mercy. Let us allow ourselves to be guided by her, she who is mother, a mamma and knows how to guide us. Let us allow ourselves to be guided by her during this season of active waiting and watchfulness. Forms will be submitted by GRACE to the Department of Revenue on January 1, In 2016, when you file your taxes, you submit paperwork (that GRACE Scholars will mail to you) that shows your gift. You then claim your tax credit for your contribution. November 30: Paid Up Insurance Policies Can be Donated to the Parish If you have paid up insurance policies you no longer need, you can donate them to the parish endowment fund or to the capital campaign or to the debt reduction campaign at your parish. This way you avoid taxes due if just cashed in. These policies can also be used to fund a Charitable Gift Annuity which will give you a good payout for the rest of your life plus tax deductions. El Árbol Anual de Regalos de San Vicente de Paúl estará en el vestíbulo del templo hasta el 5 de diciembre o hasta que todas las tarjetas con los nombres de los niños que participan en este programa se hayan tomado. Cada tarjeta tiene el nombre, la edad, el género, el tamaño y el regalo deseado por uno de estos niños. Tomen una tarjeta y hagan que el sueño de ese nino (a) se haga realidad. Envuelvan los regalos, péguenle la tarjeta que se llevaron y tráiganlos a la iglesia antes del 7 de diciembre.
