2 First World problems is a phrase that s come into common use. It describes what we in a country of privilege see as challenges that pale in comparison to the serious, life- threatening problems of people in other countries. First World problems include computer crashes that destroy all your documents, a stylist coloring your hair two shades darker than usual, or having to send French fries back because you ordered a salad. Yes, some are particularly challenging, but they aren t on the scale of surviving war or trying to afford basic daily food. The Sadducees in today s Gospel are concerned with First Life problems. They re using an earthly issue to challenge Jesus teaching on resurrection. Jesus doesn t engage in their game-playing; he says earthly concerns like marriage aren t the concerns of the Second Life the life of resurrection. He doesn t give details about this life, simply assuring them that God has promised it: to God, all are alive. Though we might not test Jesus like the Sadducees tried to, we do have questions about resurrected life. What will it be like? Who will be there? How will it compare to life here on earth? We try to imagine life after death with our limited minds, but resurrected life is beyond our ability to comprehend while we re in our First Life. We re called to trust in our covenant relationship with God a relationship that continues beyond death. Jesus reminds us, God is not the God of the dead, but of the living. We do know one thing about resurrected life: We ll be alive with God. And nothing can be better than that. JANEL ESKER Are eulogies supposed to be given at funeral Masses? I was taught that eulogies are not to be given at funeral Masses. Well, I ve been to many Catholic funerals, and each included a eulogy. Did the rule change? Practice and rules vary from diocese to diocese and even from parish to parish. However, according to the 2002 General Instruction of the Roman Missal, At the Funeral Mass there should, as a rule, be a short homily, but never a eulogy of any kind (382). The Order of Christian Funerals says the same thing (141). A homily is a talk about the Scripture readings that puts the focus on Jesus and his work of saving us from sin and death by his resurrection. A eulogy is a talk about the deceased person a biography of sorts. This really isn t appropriate for a Catholic funeral Mass, which is a celebration of the deceased s eternal life with God rather than a celebration of his or her earthly life. The Order of Christian Funerals allows a family member or friend to speak about the deceased after Communion (170). Often referred to as words of remembrance, the idea is for one person to speak for no more than a few minutes about how the deceased person lived his or her faith. A better place for a traditional eulogy and for family and friends to celebrate the life of the deceased person is at the wake or at a post funeral gathering. FR. JOHN HAMROGUE, CSSR

15 Are you a divorced Catholic? Have you re-married? Do you want to marry again? These 3 questions affect a large percentage of today's Catholic population, including members of our parish. It is not a sin to be a divorced Catholic, however, the Church does have laws that apply to Catholics who marry without the permission of the Church. Even though the state has issued a divorce decree, these Catholics are "still married in the eyes of the Church. The Catholic Church does not want to abandon its members in these situations, but rather wants to offer them HOPE and THE FULL RICHNESS OF THE SACRAMENT OF MARRIAGE. Depending upon the type of marriage situation (and each one is unique in and of itself), the Catholic Church provides the means for this to happen. If you are a part of this group and feel God tugging at your heart to respond to this great gift, please give me a call or contact me with an to set up a private and confidential appointment to discuss your situation and the process that would allow you to once again receive the sacraments of Holy Eucharist and Holy Matrimony. It does not cost anything to talk with me and hear the truth about annulments from someone other than "the neighbor who knows everything. No one is going to judge you or think ill of you. We simply want you to be able to celebrate in fullness with us. Just come, and let God do the rest. May our good and gracious God who loves you always in all ways give you peace of heart and the courage to discern and respond to His gifts.
