The new store is conveniently located at 2300 Metropolitan Avenue and will be open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The store will provide customers with low prices on fresh groceries and value-priced merchandise. In addition, the Kansas City Neighborhood Market will offer Walmart s free Site to Store program, enabling customers to choose from nearly a million additional online items that can be ordered on Walmart. com and picked up at the store for free, often as quickly as the same day. During the opening ceremony, Walmart received an award from the Environmental Protection Agency in recognition of their development of the former Kansas City Structural Steel Superfund Site. The new Neighborhood Market will anchor the 13-acre La Plaza Argentine center and is a result of a partnership between Walmart, local neighborhood groups and government entities. The new Kansas City, Kansas store is part of Walmart s plan to open an additional 270 to 300 smallformat locations this year. Valerie Pulido said she lives in the Argentine neighborhood and she and her neighbors have been looking forward to the store opening, Yes I have. I m todo el país. We re looking forward to serving the residents of the Argentine community and surrounding areas, said store manager Deryk Cogdill. At Walmart, we believe it s important that all our customers have convenient and affordable access to fresh and healthy groceries options so they can live better. 3 KCHispanicNews.com I SEPTIEMBRE 11 DEL 2014 WEATHERPROOF YOUR HOME BEFORE THE WEATHER TURNS COLD Y ou may be trying to forget about the harsh winter of a few months ago, but you probably remember your high heating bills. Well, now s the time to insulate yourself from a similar fate with next winter not all that far away. Exterior caulk and insulation can provide a formidable defense against the cold, says Debbie Zimmer, spokesperson for the Paint Quality Institute. By using these products to seal cracks and openings in the home exterior, you can save a small fortune on heating cost, and on the cost of airconditioning as well. Caulk and insulation work in two ways to add comfort to a home: first, they stop outside air from seeping in (or literally blowing in on windy days); second, they keep costly heat and air-conditioning from escaping. This one-two punch is a powerful way to knock down home energy bills. If you re in the mood to fight spiraling energy costs, begin by doing a walkaround inspection of your home exterior. Keep an eye out for cracks, gaps, or holes especially where different surfaces meet, or where pipes, vents, or wiring penetrate the walls. Also look for areas where your old caulk may have cracked, or pulled away from the surface. Every one of these areas is a potential energy sieve...and prime real estate for your caulk or insulation!. If the old caulk is damaged or deficient, remove it with a scraper or sturdy putty knife. In these areas, and in areas that are totally devoid of caulk, clean the adjacent surfaces, sand them smooth, and spotprime if any bare wood shows. This will help your caulk adhere properly to create a weather-tight seal. When applying your new caulk, be sure to use a top quality product either a water-based all-acrylic, or siliconized acrylic caulk (similarly named silicone caulks cannot be painted, so they ll be more visible on your home exterior). With a loaded caulk gun in hand, work your way around your house, filling every gap or seam with a generous bead of caulk (this is not the time to be penny-wise, or you ll look foolish when your heating bills arrive). Immediately after applying the caulk, tool it by running a wet finger over the full length of the bead, using a slight amount of pressure. This will ensure that the caulk fills the entire gap and makes good contact with the adjacent surfaces. Openings that are too large to caulk typically, spaces more than ¼ wide should be filled with a polyurethane foam insulation product. Unlike caulk, which shrinks slightly as it dries, some types of polyurethane foam actually expand after being applied. So, this type of insulation is ideal when filling large openings and cavities. After sealing every opening you see, take a break. Then, do one last walk-around to make sure you haven t missed anything. Often, you ll spot a few areas that still need attention. Put the finishing touches on your work and put your tools away. When winter comes, you ll be happy you put in the time to weatherproof your home! It was not pretty any way you dice it for Chiefs fans, in fact it was like watching a train wreck in slow motion and though you could see what was coming you could do nothing to stop it. Now some astute observers will tell you that the evidence for the collapse was there in the preseason. Other more astute observers will tell you that the wheels came off during the draft, and even more keyed in observers will tell you that it dates back to last year. Well, not being too keen on astute observers, I could only predict that the game would be a tough one given that Dwayne Bowe, Donald Stephenson or Joe Mays would not play. But that certainty was shaken slightly once it was revealed that cornerback Marcus Cooper and swift as flash De Anthony Thomas would also sit out the game. Now granted, these are not all world beaters by any stretch of the imagination but you got to admit that the absence of those players would have some kind of impact on the team. So you expect a closer than regular game, but you still have some mighty fine weapons on this team and some good solid players. It will be close but you will win. You look at your defense and you still feel good. It s not like you ve lost all-pro linebacker Derrick Johnson or a solid guy like defensive end Mike Devito. Wait a minute, did they both just go out one after the other with ruptured Achilles heels? Say it ain t so. Wait a minute. This is starting to look like a train wreck. It sure sounds like one. Those screeching breaks are the defense and offense both grinding to a halt. That is a sickening sound. Its okay, you tell yourself, but people start looking at you like you are crazy. The Nadel photos inspired the museum s work on Bittersweet Harvest and the Bracero History Project, which also includes audio clips of former braceros relating their experiences. The firsthand accounts were collected as part of the project s oralhistory initiative. This exhibition allows us to explore complex issues of race, class, community and national origin while highlighting the irrefutable contributions by Mexican Americans to American society, said Brent D. La estrella de la celebración será, como siempre lo ha sido, el pan. Y esta no es cualquier panadería. Las características de la Panadería de Las Américas, como su nombre lo indica, es pan de todo el continente americano - desde el Caribe a América Central y del Sur. Para Hernández, la panadería es la culminación de una larga fascinación de vida con el pan. Él recuerda al haber crecido en México los muchos días en que salía de la escuela e iba a la panadería de su padre, Daniel Hernández. Él aprendió de los otros panaderos a hacer pan. Cuando finalmente se trasladó a Estados Unidos en 2006, sabía lo que quería hacer. Cuando llegué aquí en 2006, empecé a trabajar en grandes panaderías, recuerda. Ese contacto es lo que me dio la idea de tener una panadería que tuviera todos los diferentes tipos de pan de América Latina. El nombre refleja que el pan es de todas las Américas. Su ética de trabajo también abarca un amplio espíritu. Desde que yo estaba trabajando en Sunfresh tuve esa pasión, nunca vi a mi empleo como algo donde yo estaba trabajando para una empresa. La cuidé y la dirigí como si fuera mi panadería. Vi a mis compañeros de trabajo como mi familia. Mientras dirigía la panadería Sunfresh, Hernández tenía un plan. Él comenzó a comprar equipo poco a poco en el 2011, y lo guardaba en su casa, pensando que iba a tener todo listo y simplemente encontrar un lugar y abrir las puertas. Él no contaba con el proceso de permisos, inspección y concesión de licencias, y los costos, que admite igualaron al dinero que había invertido en equipos. On September 15 he will celebrate one year in business with a big party starting a t 11:00 a.m.. The celebration will not be a quiet affair. The star of the celebration will be, as it always has been, the bread. And this is not just any bakery. Panaderia de Las Americas features, as its name suggests, bread from all over the Americas from the Caribbean to Central and South America. For Hernandez, the bakery is the culmination of a life long fascination with bread. He remembers growing up in Mexico the many days he would leave school and head for his father Daniel Hernandez bakery. He learned to make bread from the other bakers. When he finally moved to the United States in 2006, he knew what he wanted to do. When I came here in 2006, I started working in large bakeries, he recalls. I worked five years for Price Chopper and Sunfresh and that is how I could start my own bakery business. Since I arrived in the United States, I always wanted to work as a baker and since we had the bakery in Mexico, my thought was always [to have] this business. Hernandez approaches his work like a student. Like people say, we all learn from each other. Sometimes the student learns from the master and the master learns from the student. I worked with people that I always learned new things from like how to make the Central American, Latin American or Caribbean breads. That exposure is what gave me the idea of having a bakery that had all the different breads from Latin America. The name reflects that the bread is from all the Americas. His work ethic also embraces a broader spirit. Since I was working in Sunfresh I had that passion I never saw my employment as something where I was working for a company. I treated it and managed it like it was my bakery. I saw my fellow workers like my family. While he managed the Sunfresh bakery, Hernandez had a plan. He started buying equipment little by little in 2011 and keeping it in his house thinking that he would have it all ready and just find a place and open the doors. He did not count on the permits, inspection and licensing process, costs he admits equaled the money he had invested in equipment. He heard about an entrepreneurial program offered by the Hispanic Economic Development Council (HEDC) and applied. He received a scholarship to the Primer Paso Operation Jump Start program. Michael Carmona, business development specialist, was a recent hire at HEDC and recalled their first meetings. They were interested in starting up a panaderia (Bakery). There was something unique about that. They are not only doing Mexican breads but bread from all over Latin America. I thought that there was really a need, he recalls. Primer Paso Operation Jump Start is a 36- hour course for individuals that are in business or are about to start a business. It gives them fundamentals such as market research, help in identifying competition and market, pricing structures and the type of business to set up, Michael explains. He lauds Hernandez s dedication. I would say that Luis has taken everything that he has learned and all the help that he has gotten and he has done a great job at maximizing everything.... Luis has pretty much gone through every single service that HEDC offers. Last year when he had put every single penny in starting the business and needed just a little more, he was still there saying this is going to happen. It was at that moment that the next step came into place. The first assistance I had was the scholarship that HEDC gave me so that I could take Primer Paso, explains Hernandez. There they referred me to Brotherhood Bank & Trust and they also helped me a lot by giving me a loan. I already had the equipment and the doors open but I was lacking the capital to invest in my product, material and marketing, like radio and publicity and licensing. Tyrone Herbert, vice president Commercial Lending, met with him. Luis came prepared for a loan and I knew he d be successful. He had a thorough business plan and had already invested his own money acquiring equipment and shelving. He s worked in his father s bakery in Mexico and later moved to the area and attended HEDC small business workshops. Brotherhood Bank and Trust s credit extension to Luis was the final piece of the puzzle in making his dream a reality. It was as rewarding to us, helping this young entrepreneur, as it was for him. Luis Hernandez exemplifies our Hispanic culture, which brings amazing entrepreneurship skills, dedication and the real courage it takes to launch a small business. I admire his work ethic and drive to create a business to support his family, and we knew the bank could follow our philosophy of doing whatever it takes to make his business a successful reality, says Sandra Olivas, Business Development officer for the bank. Hernandez is a practical man and methodical in his approach, He studied various locations before he chose the Westside. I was looking for a place where there would be people from different parts of the world not just specifically from Mexico. I saw places that were saturated with bakeries. I saw places that were far from any Hispanic or Latino people. I saw Southwest Boulevard is the heart of the Latino community. You have not only Mexican people, but also you see people from Guatemala, El Salvador, Colombia, Cuba and all the countries of Latin America. They come here and see breads from all over South America. This is not a big place but I give them a little something of home. He admits the first year has been a learning experience. They say the first year is the hardest. I have seen the way that people have responded to the bakery. I have seen what people have accepted. I have seen what works and doesn t work. In the second year, I feel that I am prepared for whatever comes along. Like everything we do, we have to try and see what works little by little. He credits his family for his passion and what he chooses to sell. His father helps out when he can and he can count on his wife to help with deliveries but also helping expand his selections. His wife Yeiseni Aguilera is Cuban and she brought her own traditions into the business introducing him to the typical breads of her homeland. He researched on the Internet studying how the breads were made and through trial and error began making them. That is why we have Cuban breads, he says. He concedes that there are times when the demands of the business side can be exhausting, but at the end of the day you say, this is something that I wanted. This is something that little by little will keep growing and in the future it will be a little more tranquil. Officials with the Kansas City Police Department (KCPD) and the Kansas City, Kansas Police Department (KCKPD) said the agencies had practices in place designed to keep good working relations with the public before the Ferguson incident. One of the focus points of Chief Darryl Forte s vision is that the police department and the community work together, Sgt. Kari Thompson of KCPD s media unit told Kansas City Hispanic News. Without a collaborative effort with our community partners, we as a whole will not succeed. We have an open-door policy. We are open to new ideas. The department has been holding community forums since Forte took the helm, she said. Forte was named as the department s 44th chief on Oct. 12, We have officers meeting people in communities, at restaurants (and) at different functions, Thompson said. We are completely transparent. We also go to homeowners association meetings. We are letting (the public) know that we are approachable. KCPD also partners with the mayor s office and the Kansas City Parks and Recreation Department for Club KC, a program that provides places where youths can gather and socialize in safe environments. Kids come to several community centers on Friday and Saturday nights, Thompson said. They can play basketball, play video games, dance (and) eat. They don t have to worry about curfew violations, and they can socialize. There are police officers (there) who interact with the kids. We offer this from about June through August and have for the past three years. KCKPD offers what it calls a community partnership, which it had started before the Ferguson incident, Sgt. Emmett Lockridge said. We attend community meetings, but since Ferguson, we have met with community leaders and talked to them about some of their concerns with law enforcement, Lockridge told Hispanic News. Their main concerns included attitude and conduct (of) officers, diversity of the department to be reflective of the community, transparency and trust, and outreach community engagement. We re taking those areas and, what we weren t working on, we are now. We have reviewed those plans and established some other protocols to help keep situations from getting out of control, to prevent Ferguson from happening in the first place. Lockridge said that department personnel have discussed the idea that officers efforts to conduct themselves professionally came off as standoffish and impersonal. We ve already had things in our training to improve our overall customer service, he said. Not everyone in the public is nice and compliant, and we have a job to do. Probably a large percentage of the time we re called out is for assistance, not for volatile situations. They re people calling for help. Lockridge believes, there is some truth to the allegation that many African-American communities historical distrust of police is justified in certain cases. It s unrealistic to deny that there s any abuse that may have occurred or may be going on, in all of our communities, he said. Ferguson gives us an opportunity to build on our relationships and (improve) them. And the community can be a big part of that. Missouri House Rep. Kenneth Wilson (R-12th District) has paid particular attention to relations between communities and police, and to other issues surrounding the Ferguson incident. Wilson teaches ethics specializing in police ethics at the Missouri Western Regional Law Enforcement Academy in St. Joseph. He also is a former chief of the Smithville Police Department and the current pastor of Edgerton (Missouri) Christian Church. He responded via to questions from Hispanic News about the Ferguson incident and its aftermath. He spoke not for the Missouri General Assembly, he said, but as a retired, career law enforcement officer. Police officers are professionals, and any contact with an officer should be conducted in a respectful manner, Wilson said. When a police officer is disrespectful or rude to a citizen during an encounter, at the roadside is not the place to debate it. Everyone will have their day in court, and every citizen can make a formal complaint to the chief. Police officers are held to a higher standard of conduct than many other citizens, he said, and this is how it must be. Yes, some will tarnish the badge and pay the consequences, but that number is few. Wilson cited the Missouri law that authorizes law enforcement officers to use deadly force, which is available online at chapters/chap563.htm. But he also said he didn t think that citizens want a police force that looks like a bunch of commandos. However, as a (matter of) day-to-day safety and protection of the citizens, our police departments are not acting or mirroring military units, he said. Now, when critical incidents happen, it is imperative that our officers have the tools and personal protection necessary to safely and quickly bring the situation under control. Most police departments face budget crunches, he said, and what is wrong in obtaining equipment that can be retro-fitted to meet the demands of the local agency? he said. Officers are dying in the line of duty to protect society from bad people; we should be thanking them not ridiculing them. The Ferguson incident also has prompted attention and action by the nation s highest level of law enforcement. U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder said in a news release Sept. 4 that, in addition to the U.S Department of Justice s ongoing civil rights investigation of Brown s death, the agency has started an investigation to determine whether Ferguson police have engaged in a pattern or practice of violations of the U.S. Constitution or federal law. As you know, our federal civil rights investigation into the August 9 shooting death of Michael Brown remains open and very active, Holder said in the release. As I made clear during my visit to Ferguson two weeks ago, this investigation will take time. But the American people can have confidence that it will be fair, it will be thorough, and it will be independent. Holder said he had spoken with local residents during that visit and had heard their concerns. I heard from them directly about the deep mistrust that has taken hold between law enforcement officials and members of the community, he said in the release. In meetings and listening sessions as well as informal conversations people consistently expressed concerns stemming from specific alleged incidents, from general policing practices, and from the lack of diversity on Ferguson s police force. These anecdotal accounts underscored the history of mistrust of law enforcement in Ferguson that has received a good deal of attention. Holder said, though, that he knew that the overwhelming majority of our brave men and women in uniform do their jobs honorably, with integrity, and often at great personal risk. The Civil Rights Division s efforts are simply meant to ensure that law enforcement officers in every part of the U.S. live up to those same high standards of professionalism. Holder added that the Justice Department approached the St. Louis County Police Department about a collaborative reform effort, and that the department s chief voluntarily agreed to take part. The process will include an evaluation of the Ferguson Police Department s response to Brown s death and its aftermath. It also will review racial profiling; stops, searches and frisking; the handling of mass demonstrations by police officials; and law enforcement training both at the police academy and at the continuing professional level. Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon, who received criticism for his responses to the Ferguson incident, on Sept. 3 lifted the state of emergency in Ferguson, which he had declared on Aug. 16. Nixon activated the Missouri National Guard on Aug. 18 to provide security at the state s unified command center in Ferguson, which was closed Aug. 27, according to a news release from his office. Separately on Sept. 3, the U.S. Small Business Administration responding to a request from Nixon in a news release said it would make low-interest disaster loans available to business owners and nonprofit organizations in north St. Louis County that had suffered substantial economic injury as a result of the events in Ferguson. Nixon had said on Aug. 29 that the state would commit small business loans to support the Small Business Relief Program, a public-private partnership comprising the state, the St. Louis Regional Chamber, the St. Louis Economic Development Partnership and local lenders. Nixon appointed state treasurer Clint Zweifel to oversee the state s commitment to the program, which Nixon said would provide as much as $1 million to help Ferguson businesses damaged by rioting and looting.
