2 Page Two April 12, 2015 Pastor s Column Think of what is above, not of what is on earth. For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ your life appears, then you too will appear with him in glory. (Colossians 3:2-4) This morning, the Monday after Easter, the staff returned to work to find that vandals had broken several windows into our parish hall and offices although nothing has been stolen and destroyed inside. Unfortunately, the St. Vincent de Paul room had food items stolen. The Placentia Police did a great job in searching the entire facility to make sure that no one was still inside, and investigating the incident. The church and rectory were not touched. It s such a shock when we discover that our home or car has been vandalized or items taken, and even more ourselves or a family member being attacked as happens so much in our society. We wonder what goes through the mind and heart of someone who would do these things. The Easter message is proclaiming the victory of Christ over sin and death. He is Risen so that we might be freed from evil and serve him with all our hearts. Yet on this day after Easter, there are reminders that even for Christ, that victory came in the midst of human suffering. This Easter reading from St. Paul reminds us that while we still live in the world (a fallen world), we are called to think of what is above. Christ is above, risen from the dead so that we may continue to persevere in holiness. A part of his holiness is forgiving the unknown person(s) who wanted to damage our parish property, and steal items meant for the poor. Yes, we live on earth, but the Risen Christ calls us to transform this world into his Kingdom. May our Easter joy live on in the hope and promise of Jesus who calls us to appear with him in glory. ~Fr. Jack PANCAKE BREAKFAST Next Sunday, April 19th, The Knights of Columbus will be hosting a pancake breakfast in the Halls. Breakfast will be served from 8 am to 12 pm. We begin on Monday, April 13 at 7:15 PM in the Parish Center, room 3&4. For more information contact Paula Dougherty. ASSISTED SUICIDE PREVENTION The Catholic Church has always defended the sanctity of human life. With advances in medical technology, that defense has organically evolved to represent life from the moment of conception to the moment of natural death. That defense has consistently been put to the test by an increasingly secular world that would value human life only in terms of pleasure or function--as if a painful or difficult life, or even a 'nonproductive' life, were not worth living. In a unique way man has received his life directly from God, in the way that God--figuratively expressed--blew the man whom he had formed from earth the breath of life into his nostrils. In paradise man could eat from the 'tree of life' as long as he did not touch the 'tree of knowledge.' Above all the human life deserves unconditional protection from its very beginning. The prohibition to kill a human person is expressed in many places of Holy Scripture, first of all in the fifth commandment of the Decalogue. The prohibition of the Decalogue protects innocent people. (Diocese of Orange) BECOMING CATHOLIC Do you know someone who might be interested in becoming a Catholic? Our parish offers year round information sessions for inquirers. Contact Paula Dougherty in the parish Center office.

3 Page Three April 12, 2015 Second Sunday of Easter PEACE Throughout the liturgical year we focus on the words, actions, and miracles of Jesus as he moved from town to town. Today we focus especially on the first word of the Risen One as he greeted the disciples on the evening of that first Easter: Peace. The first word from the mouth of God s Son who had been unfairly tried, who had been beaten and spit upon, whose hands and feet were nailed to a tree, who suffered enormous pain in that torturous death was the word Peace. Not Revenge! Not Retribution! Not Kill! Peace. INSPIRED BY THE GOSPEL OF PEACE After suffering one of the greatest injustices known in history, it would seem that Jesus had every reason to bring down vengeance upon those who had treated him with such unfairness. But instead of vengeance, he spoke of peace. To us this may seem odd. For many of us, almost from the beginning of our lives, we are taught that the response to violence must be revenge. But does this have to be the case? Many of us remember the day when Pope John Paul II was shot in St. Peter s Square. Did he seek revenge on the one who shot him? No; when the pope recovered, he visited his would be assassin in prison, bringing with him the peace that comes through reconciliation. When this occurred, many in the world were stunned by what seemed to be an unbelievable gesture. They were stunned because this is simply not what the world has come to expect. In his gesture of reconciliation, the pope showed himself as an embodiment of the actions of Christ on that first Easter evening. Today is a day to ponder the fact that Jesus Christ sought to exact no revenge for the way he was treated. Instead he inspired in his followers, and inspires within us, a deep commitment to peace. 6 Page Six April 12, 2015 Renewing our Commitment National Child Abuse Prevention Month In an effort to raise awareness of the suffering caused by child abuse and neglect, Congress and the President designated April as Child Abuse Prevention Month in Since that time religious, public service, philanthropic and other organizations that care deeply for the welfare of children have marked April as a special time for highlighting and renewing their commitments to the care and protection of children and young people. As your Bishop nothing is more important to my pastoral mission than to provide the utmost care for those who need it most. From counseling the needy to extending financial aid to caregivers, our Church and Diocese are committed to the physical, spiritual and social wellbeing of everyone we encounter. This is particularly true for the children we seek to support, guide and care for. It is important to me and our diocese that we mark this national observance by recalling and reinforcing our steadfast commitment to creating and maintaining safe environments for children in our schools, parishes and other facilities. The Diocese of Orange takes this task very seriously, as does the broader Church. We employ a comprehensive background screening for all adults likely to be in contact with children - already over 75,000 have been vetted. This process allows for the collection of a wide variety of past screening data, including extensive backgrounds checks and fingerprinting, and is designed to enhance already in-place diocesan policies. Our diocese additionally requires all clergy, employees, and volunteers to undergo Safe Environment Training. In 2014 alone, the Diocese trained 286 priests, 115 deacons, 1,664 teachers, and more than 25,519 school employees and volunteers. Our schools and Religious Education classes at parishes and diocesan centers also provide Safe Environment education for children. This procedure is suited to their age and level of understanding. In 2014, nearly 44,000 children participated in this critically important awareness program. Please join me in recognizing the tireless efforts put forth by those involved in the development and implementation of all initiatives for the protection of children and young people. Keep them in your prayers and remember that care for others is a duty and a gift. By sharing our concern and becoming responsible for the safety and well-being of those who come into our care is a spiritual act we can be proud of, every day. The Church has worked hard to protect children and remains vigilant in protecting and caring for our most cherished resource. Much has been done, but more needs to be done. Until abuse is no longer a part of society, I and our Church will continue these efforts to protect children, youth and vulnerable adults. Column printed in Orange County Catholic newspaper CHILD ABUSE PREVENTION MONTH April is national Child Abuse Prevention Month. It is most appropriate that Child Prevention Month is held during Lenten and Easter seasons as there is no better time than this when we experience renewal and growth that we celebrate the protection of our most valuable gift from God- our children. For information on how you can become more informed and involved in keeping our children safe, log on to or contact the Diocesan Office of Child and Youth Protection, (714) STEWARDSHIP OF TREASURE The next Stewardship of Treasure report will be published in the April 19, 2015 bulletin. Thank you for your patience. RESERVED PARKING There is a reserved parking area in front of the Parish Center. During weekdays these parking spaces are reserved from 7AM until 5 PM and distinguished by the green lined spaces and green signs. These spaces are for Parish Center staff only. On the weekends you will find some of these same spaces marked for additional handicapped parking.

7 Page Seven April 12, 2015 Easter Duty Paul Turner Going to communion is a treasured privilege among Roman Catholics. Most of the faithful present themselves for the Eucharist at every Mass they attend. It is hard to imagine a time when people received communion infrequently, but that was the case for many centuries. As the church stressed our belief in the real presence of Christ in the Eucharist, our ancestors began to feel unworthy to share it. Some people took this to an extreme and stopped receiving communion altogether. That was never the idea. At the Last Supper, Jesus said, Take and eat, take and drink. He issued an invitation; he did not set up a barrier. Consequently, in the year 1215, the Fourth Lateran Council decided to take action. It required the faithful who had reached the age of discretion to confess their sins at least once a year to their own parish priest and to receive the sacrament of the Eucharist reverently at least once a year at Easter. A version of this rule is still in the Code of Canon Law of the Roman Catholic Church. After their first communion, each of the faithful must receive holy communion at least once a year during the Easter season (the 50 days from Easter Sunday to Pentecost). But for a just cause, people may receive at another time of year (canon 920). Having reached the age of discretion, Catholics are obliged to confess grave sin at least once a year to any priest (canon 989), which many have done during Lent to prepare for an Easter communion. Lent is still a good time to go to confession. Easter is a wonderful time to receive communion. But we should confess grave sin right away and receive communion every Sunday. No venganza!, desquite!, muerte!, sino paz. BUSQUEDA: ST. JOSEPH CATHOLIC CHURCH - PLACENTIA, CA
