3 Milestones and music Story and photos by Mónica Barnkow Mark S. is no stranger to hardships. Born in the Ukraine, he was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis as a young boy. He and his family would later move to Brooklyn. When he was 18, his father was sentenced to federal prison on fraud charges. Facing off against what seemed like greater adversity than what typically besets the average 20-year-old, Mark felt trapped in a circle of anger, resentment and despair. He ran into trouble with drugs, becoming a regular user of marijuana, OxyContin and heroin. There were run-ins with police, and arrests. And then came the bass. During one appearance in court, Mark was offered the opportunity to join a remediation program. He took it, and was linked with a music program. There, he has learned to play bass guitar and he says he has regained hope. It put me back on track, said Mark. The Music on Wheels program of which Mark is part is one of the many offered by the Acacia Network at its Residential Rehabilitation Recovery Program for Young Men. The facility, inaugurated in May 2014, has a community college feel and offers its 40 residents a host of community-based services, It put me back on track, said Mark S., of his program work. including primary and specialty health care, to ensure whole person recovery and wellness. And there is music. There is an intensive musical arts program, with a band composed of residents who take up their instrument of choice. They learn to play and practice in earnest in the multipurpose room. For Mark, it has proven a game-changer. It reminded me what was important in life. He is now determined to obtain a Bachelor s Degree in Philosophy and a Master s Degree in Literary Arts, and he wants to become a journalist. Mark shared his story at the 10 th Annual Julio Martínez Memorial Fund (JMMF) Breakfast held this past Thurs., Jun. 18th. Milagros Baez-O Toole, who leads the Board at Acacia, said that the support provided by private enterprise and nonprofit organizations such as those present on Thursday made a difference. This is a good investment, said Baez- O Toole. 5 Lighthouse looks to lead Story by Gregg McQueen S chool District 12 in the South Bronx has reported a low fouryear graduation rate for its high school students 54.1 percent for the class of A charter school on Intervale Avenue is not only looking to change that number, but also guarantee that all of its students get into college. When Bronx Lighthouse College Prep Academy (BLCPA) graduates its first class of seniors on June 27, all 41 of them will moving on to a four-year college or university this fall. It isn t the norm in the community that we live in, remarked principal Dianne Hardcastle. Unfortunately, most high schools in this area are focused on that bare minimum of getting kids to complete high school requirements, she said. For us, we really need to make sure they are prepared for maximum opportunity. BLCPA, launched in 2011, is the high-school segment of a K through 12 charter school under the Bronx Lighthouse umbrella, which provides an intense, arts-infused college prep curriculum. Admission to BLCPA, which currently has about 215 students, is lottery-based. The student body represents the population From left to right: BLCPA seniors Stephanie Guzmán, Jailene Cepeda, and Gemely Ducasse will attend Ursinus College in the fall. of the community, said Hardcastle, with 89 percent of students receiving free or reduced price lunch. BLPCA seniors were accepted into a wide variety of colleges, including Cornell University, Wellesley College, Barnard College, Binghamton University, Ursinus College, Baruch College, Stony Brook University and Hunter College. Two of our seniors received full financial scholarships, and we have a student going to an Ivy League school, said Alice Choi, Director of College Transitions at BLCPA. The school s curriculum is rigorous and focuses students on developing skills they will need as college students. There are five advanced placement (AP) courses at BLCPA, and more than 100 students took at least one AP exam this past school year. Most public high schools in our community don t offer those types of courses that are really important for college admission purposes, commented Hardcastle. The school s first senior class will be celebrated during a graduation ceremony at Fordham University s McGinley Ballroom on Thurs., Jun. 25th. Graduating senior Keith Small will attend Emory and Henry College in Virginia in September. A Bronxville resident who has attended BLCPA since the second grade, Small credits the school with inciting him to set higher goals for himself. They really push you, said Small. They want you to do more than just what is acceptable. Small is the first person in his family to attend college, where he intends to study mass communications. 6 Summer Standbys When packing your bag for outdoor activities this summer, don t forget these seven summer standbys. It is essential that you protect your skin, eyes and body from the summer sun and heat. 1. Sunscreen Just one blistering sunburn can increase your risk of skin cancer, explains Dr. Shari Lipner, a Dermatologist at NewYork-Presbyterian/ Weill Cornell Medical Center. Use a broadspectrum, water-resistant sunscreen that protects the skin against both UVA and UVB rays and has an SPF of at least Sunglasses Overexposure to the sun not only wreaks havoc on your skin, but can also damage your eyes, says Dr. George Cioffi, Chief of Ophthalmology at NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia University Medical Center. Health risks associated with overexposure to the sun include damage to the cornea, tissue growth on the surface of eyes and even cancer of the eyelids. Sun damage may also contribute to the development of cataracts. 3. Bug Spray Prevent itchy mosquito bites and protect your skin from illnesses caused by insect bites, such as West Nile virus (caused by mosquitoes), Lyme disease (caused by tick bites) and Rocky Mountain spotted fever (caused by tick bites). You can also wear longsleeved clothing to further protect yourself. 4. Hat Freckles on the skin may be a sign of sustained sun damage. They generally develop in sun-exposed areas such as the face, chest and arms. You can protect yourself from the sun by wearing a wide-brimmed hat, long-sleeved shirt and pants. 5. Water Hydrate. Headaches, nausea and weakness are all signs of heat exhaustion. Everyone should stay hydrated by drinking water or sports drinks. Avoid alcohol and caffeine, which can dehydrate you. 6. Lip Balm (with sunscreen) - Your lips need sunscreen too! Make sure your lip balm is labeled Broad-Spectrum SPF 30. Skin cancer can occur on the lips, most commonly on the lower lip. In fact, these cancers are more likely to metastasize than those at most other sites. 7. Petroleum Jelly Cuts and scrapes are common in the summer months. After cleaning the wound with mild soap and water, use petroleum jelly to keep the wound moist. This will prevent it from drying out and forming a scab, which would take longer to heal. NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital is one of the nation s largest and most comprehensive hospitals and a provider of inpatient, ambulatory and preventive care in all areas of medicine. With some 2,600 beds and more than 6,500 affiliated physicians and 20,000 employees, NewYork- Presbyterian had more than 2 million visits in 2013, including close to 15,000 infant deliveries and more than 310,000 emergency department visits. 9 I Love the Bronx Yo Amo El Bronx Morris Perk CBK Morris Perk pops up at different locations. By Nilka Martell am a Bronx native, I daughter, sister, mother of three beautiful Bronx babies, photographer, writer and motivator, says contributor Nilka Martell, of Puerto Rican descent, as she continues to explore her hometown. Here is her latest installment. Though we were not allowed to drink it regularly, we grew up in a home where the aroma of coffee was ever present. I recall neighbors would come to my apartment to speak to my mother, and sure enough, coffee was always served. On special occasions, my mom would serve us a little cup, and remind my sisters and I that we were too young to drink coffee. When I came of age, it wasn t long before coffee became an everyday part of my life. While my coffee of choice is a Mexican blend with milk from a Carnation can, last year I was introduced to a new brand: Morris Perk coffee, which is a Columbian- South American medium roast blend. Morris Perk, a local coffee service, pops up at different locations throughout the borough. Most recently, they have teamed up with Charlie s Bar and Kitchen at 112 Lincoln Avenue to offer hot and cold coffee, espresso drinks, teas and an assortment of pastries and breakfast items. Their hours of operations are Monday through Friday, from 6:30 a.m. 9:30 a.m. The collaboration is called CBK Perk, incorporating both business. Morris Perk Founder Lovie Pignata has had her eye on a particular location, though some obstacles have come up. None have kept her from creating quite a presence throughout the Bronx. Morris Perk beverages have been served at numerous Bronx-based community events, including at the Bronx Museum of the Arts, Bronx River Alliance, Bronx Music Heritage Center and even some yoga studios. I m most excited about their cold brew option. I had the opportunity of tasting it last week, and I ll be the first to tell you, it is smooth. While the venture is temporary, Pignata is excited to be offering Morris Perk beverages in the Mott Haven area. The official opening was this past Mon., Jun. 22 nd and it was no surprise that the dozens stopped in. Residents of the Clock Tower, local business owners and employees dropped by for a cup of joe and a moment to refocus before starting their work day. And the crowd also included many who had come in from different neighborhoods just to be perked up by CBK. While Morris Perk s ultimate goal is to recreate a gathering space wherever it finally opens, it seems that in the meantime, where ever it pops up now, community gathers. Come and see (and taste) for yourself. 10 Sigh in the sky The new design has been described as win-win. Photo: LG The skyline will not rise in the west. LG Electronics USA and environmental and local advocacy organizations, who had been locked in disagreement and a legal battle over the company s new North American headquarters in New Jersey, announced that a win-win agreement on a new design had been reached. Originally planned as a 143-foot structure that would rise above the natural tree line of the Palisades, the new structure will instead be a fivestory, 69-foot structure. The original design for the building in Englewood Cliffs had been opposed on both sides of the George Washington Bridge by those who insisted that the natural landscape of the Palisades would be destroyed. There s no reason that that Palisades that have looked the same for thousands of years should be damaged, said Joe Rappaport of Protect the Palisades in February Claudia Bonn, Executive Director of the Bronx s Wave Hill, was one of the first to raise The original design. Photo: LG the issue at local community Board 8. We have no issues with them building we just requested a redesign, she said at the time. This is one of the last great natural resources in our country. It would be like building a horrible tower on the Grand Canyon. For decades, development by the Palisades had been capped at 35 feet, but LG Electronics secured permission from the town of Englewood Cliffs in 2012 to build higher. Dozens of meetings were convened throughout Northern Manhattan and the Bronx, and in New Jersey; elected officials issued statements of opposition to the project; and protests were held at LG offices. But this past Tues., Jun. 23rd, a settlement was announced. We have found a solution that satisfies LG s business needs and addresses concerns of our neighbors on both sides of the Hudson, said William Cho, President and CEO of LG Electronics USA. 12 Hitos y música Fondo conmemora década de servicio Historia y fotos por Mónica Barnkow Mark S. no es ajeno a las dificultades. 14 Crafted with grit and care The Jumbo Shrimp and Grits. Story and photos by Mónica Barnkow He started making breakfast at age 4. By the time he was eight, he was baking, and he was stir-frying at 11. Today, the culinary prodigy is the chef and co-owner of BLVD Bistro, a charming, family-run restaurant at the corner of Malcolm X Boulevard and 122nd Street in Harlem. Born in Natchez, Mississippi, Carlos Swepson always knew his passion was food. He honed his culinary skills by watching Julia Child and Jacques Pepin s television shows. But his first and central inspiration was his grandmother, Mamie, who worked as a maid for a white family in Mississippi. For his own collegeeducated African-American parents, Swepson s career choice wasn t what they expected. They were looking for their children to do better than they did, and you do that through education, said Swepson, noting that as a child, the profession was not seen as one worthy of serious aspiration. There was no Food Network or celebrity chefs then. But he persevered sticking close to what was an undeniable passion. After graduating from culinary school and working in the restaurant business for over 20 years, his dreams of having his own This is where the tea is always sweet. His dream was to share the food he grew up with. The restaurant offers continental American food with a Southern influence. The chef single-handedly created the menu, which features traditional soul food dishes rendered with an elegant touch. I like to call it crafted American food, said Swepson, stressing that soul food should be recognized as part of the American culinary canon. Swepson chose the Harlem location because he wanted to find a natural home for his menu, and sought to create an environment within which his culinary choices would most likely find discerning patrons. He wanted to focus on a neighborhood that could appreciate this kind of food, said Joi. It is a beautiful neighborhood. The restaurant offers both indoor and outdoor seating and is outfitted with colorful, dramatic artwork and warm, intimate lighting. Among the popular main courses are the Seven Cheese Macaroni, topped with apple-smoked bacon; the Fried Chicken Sliders on buttermilk biscuits; and the Jumbo Shrimp and Grits, a decadent combination of pan-seared shrimp, cheddar buttery grits, topped with jalapeño and bacon bits. Even the side dishes receive lavish attention. The collard greens are phenomenal, said the chef, with no discernible need for modesty. You literally get chunks of smoked turkey. Desserts include cheesecake with whipped cream and berries, banana bread pudding with bourbonpecan ice cream and Mamie s German Chocolate Cake, named after two influential people in the chef s life: his grandmother and his mother. At the bar, BLVD Bistro offers wines and beers, including Sugar Hill and Coney Island Overpass IPA, brews from Harlem and Brooklyn, respectively. The ingredients for the dishes are chosen with great care and are locally sourced. What makes this place different is that is very ingredient-driven, said Joi. We take the time to source them from places where we know they are going to be high-quality. The eatery employs about a dozen people. Colorful and intimate. Among them is seasoned restaurant manager, Ruth Pagan, who lives in Chelsea. From the moment she set foot in the restaurant, she fell in love and soon was hired as general manager. I found my second home, she said. Harlem resident Jared Brewer said the restaurant ranked high on his list. I like the feel of the place. It is a quiet little establishment, said Brewer, after enjoying a succulent turkey meatloaf. The service is wonderful. 16 The experts gathered to announce the verdict: summer in the city s parks was about to be enhanced like never before. Special Case of CPI During a field day at the Martin Luther King Jr. Playground in Harlem, Parks Commissioner Mitchell J. Wednesday s field day was a showcase of the variety of programming that will be held in parks throughout the city because of the Community Parks Initiative (CPI). Access to parks doesn t depend on proximity alone it means having a well-cared for space where neighbors feel welcome, engaged, and proud, said Commissioner Silver. Since the Community Parks Initiative was launched in October 2014, we ve already made a direct impact on high-needs communities by making small but important improvements in their local parks. Enhanced programming this summer will be targeted to under-resourced parks in densely populated communities that are home to a higher-than-average percentage of individuals and families with incomes below the poverty line. NYC Parks has identified 55 of these priority zones across the five boroughs, which are now benefitting from capital investment, extended recreational programs, increased maintenance staffing, expanded community engagement efforts and partnership-building, and physical park repairs through the Community Parks Initiative. This summer, neighborhood parks in CPI zones will benefit from: 69 New Playground Associates. Funded by $1.2 million from Mayor de Blasio through CPI, these new playground staff will organize summer programs in parks throughout CPI zones. 17 LIGHTHOUSE from p5 Half of the people I know from my neighborhood aren t going to college, so that s something I really wanted to achieve, he stated. Small said that being among the first BLCPA graduates made him feel like a role model to others at the school. I feel like juniors there are looking up to me and thinking, I can achieve that too, remarked Small. It is BLCPA s promise to students that if they graduate from the academy, they will be admitted to a four-year college or university. Hardcastle said that in areas with high poverty rates such as the South Bronx, many families don t view college as an option for their children. Convincing parents of that is part of our mission, and we educate them about all of the financial assistance that is available to them, so they can see that college isn t unattainable, said Hardcastle. The school works closely with students to apply to a variety of colleges, including those that might be a reach for them and those that would be considered safety schools. We want our students to see that colleges will be coming after them, trying to get them to go there, said Choi. We re looking for our students to get not just into any college or university, but one that will transform their lives, added Hardcastle. Bronx Lighthouse College Prep Academy is located at 1005 Intervale Avenue, Bronx NY For more information, call or visit schools/bronx-prep. 20 New LGBTQ Resource Guide City Comptroller Scott Stringer has released a new 2015 issue of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer Guide of Services and Resources, which includes the launch of an accompanying website. The 2015 Guide offers a comprehensive look at contact and background information for nearly 600 programs and non-profits serving the city s LGBTQ community. The new guide also includes over 250 updated entries, 30 additions, and categorizes organizations by area of focus, such as legal, anti-violence, and youth service providers. New York City, home of the gay rights movement and one of the most LGBTQfriendly communities in the world, deserves a guide that can connect people to the services they need, said Stringer. Our LGBTQ Guide helps residents and visitors alike better understand what resources are available, from hundreds of community organizations and health care facilities to counseling and support groups, recreational clubs, and much more. Among the 30 new additions include LGBTQ health services at city hospitals which will provide a wide range of The new guide offers updated information. specialized services, such as the Metropolitan Hospital Center in Manhattan, which offers transgender family services. The guide also raises awareness of the existing challenges for the LGBTQ community. A recent survey found that 74 percent of transgender persons have experienced harassment on the job, while another study showed that over 40 percent of homeless youth identify as LGBTQ. BRONX LAB IN COLLABORATION WITH BOOGIE DOWN RIDES Sunday, July 12, 11:00am to 2:00pm Explore the history of the Young Lords party by bike!
