2 2. DETAILS OF CHAPTER ACTIVITIES SINCE LAST REPORT 2.1. OVERWIEV Our chapter works under a committees structure in order to reach traced objectives. Those committees are: Academic, Projects, Divulgation, Enterprise, and Relationships. This year our chapter achieved get new members, because we did a good labor in the divulgation commitee, furthermore we did a great work in projects commitee with some activities around the city. We have great expectations for next year's 2012, our members are very excited and want to achieve big goals. Every Friday at 11:00 am we have meeting where we talk about our plans and new ideas to promote optics science, every week one of us prepare an exposition about a topic of interest. We have a schedule that we put below and some pictures of ours weekly meeting:

4 2.2. DIVULGATION COMMITTE Leader: Catalina Hurtado Its objective is to promote optics and photonics studies and researches in the academic and social environment by recruiting new members for the chapter. This objective is accomplished by means of communicating about local courses and conferences, spreading information from the other committees, developing and printing publicity (Business cards, services offer,...) and maintaining the Chapter web site. a. Participation in National Meetings Some of our members were in the Encuentro Nacional de Óptica, National meeting of Optics in English; we participated with our works and researches, besides we had the oportunity to meet other members to SPIE and others Student Chapters of Colombia. We encouraged students from the state of Atlantico to create their own chapter. This meeting was realized in Barranquilla, Colombia. In the next pictures we can see to Yamile, Catalina, Katty and Maria Julia in the meeting, all of them members to the Chapter Student.

5 a. Optics and Photonics 2011 Yamile travelled to San Diego to the Optics and Photonics and participated in the workshops to Chapter Students. She came with many ideas, she told us about many things that we can do to grow our Student Chapter. Some pictures below:

6 a. Web site The divulgation committee has been renewing the web site; they have been attending training to change and work in the new web site. This is available on On the other hand, this committe has been working in new posters to will be published in some schools around the city. Those posters contains information about us and what we do, the main idea is that teachers call us to invite us to their schools and we can go to show our experiments. Some of those posters are indexed in the end. b. Integration meetings We have had some meetings to celebrating some ocassions, in an opportunity we said Good Bye to Samuel, he was a member, but he went to German to study. 7 2.3. PROJECTS COMMITTE Science Fascinating This is our most important activity, consist in visiting some schools and showing some experiments. Our motivation to realize these activities is that many of these schools are low income and their education has of poor quality, we bring these students some experience that may encourage interest in science. Some pictures below: ALOP (Active Learning in Optics and Photonics) Past August was realized the Workshop ALOP that was organized by UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization). This workshop was leaded for teachers from developing countries to promote creativity and innovation in the way of teaching optics. The ALOP project uses a novel method of active learning pedagogy, which has given excellent results in the teaching of physics in general, it is to guide the student in a self-learning path based on carefully designed experiments and exercises that require a equipment simple and easily reproducible. Our student chapter was involved in the logistics of the event. Some pictures below. The last pictures is the last day of the event, we were invited for the teachers because of our good work.

13 Divulgar la ciencia y tecnología de la luz es el objetivo esencial de un proyecto denominado Ciencia Fascinante mediante la interacción de las personas con experimentos que permiten ver los fenómenos relacionados con la luz. Esto se lleva a cabo a través de visitas a instituciones educativas, donde se lleva material didáctico para la realización de los experimentos los cuales son guiados por los miembros del capítulo CEO (Capítulo estudiantil en Óptica - UN Medellín). 14 El CEO es un g rupo de estudiantes de pregrado y postg rado de la Universidad Nacional de Colombia Sede Medellín. El objetivo principal de nuestro g rupo es promover el estudio y la investigación en la ciencia óptica y en la ingeniería óptica en nuestro entorno social y académico. El capítulo se visualiza como medio de comunicación e interacción entre estudiantes, facultades y las empresas locales que desarrollen sus actividades en temas af ines a nuestros intereses. Si perteneces a nuestro g rupo puedes ser miembro de dos de las organizaciones internacionales más reconocidas en el campo de la Óptica, mediante las cuales t enemos acceso a bibliog rafía asociada al t ema de interés y a conferencias anuales de invitados del exterior. Además nuestro capítulo recibe apoyo económico de estas organizaciones para realizar las actividades necesarias para cumplir con el objetivo, una de ellas es la divulgación de la ciencia en Instituciones Educativas dando a conocer el proyecto de Ciencia Fascinante. 16 El CEO es un grupo de estudiantes de pregrado y postgrado de la Universidad Nacional de Colombia Sede Medellín. El objetivo principal de nuestro grupo es promover el estudio y la investigación en la ciencia óptica y en la ingeniería óptica en nuestro entorno social y académico. El capítulo se visualiza como medio de comunicación e interacción entre estudiantes, facultades y las empresas locales que desarrollen sus actividades en temas afines a n u e s t r o s intereses. Para pertenecer al Capítulo debes ser miembro de alguna de l a s d o s o r g a n i z a c i o n e s internacionales que nos apoyan, ya sea OSA o SPIE, para lo cual debes pagar la membresía que tienen un valor de $15 y $10 dólares respectivamente. Si deseas hacer parte de ambas el grupo te financiara con 20 mil pesos. ANIMATE!! Y TENDRÁS MUCHOS BENEFICIOS. Además de o b t e n e r l a tarjeta que te identifica como m i e m b r o, podrás recibir mensualmente revistas. También tendrás acceso a bibliografía online asociada a temas de interés. Así mismo, anualmente se realizan charlas con conferencistas invitados. Por otro lado nuestro capítulo recibe apoyo económico de estas organizaciones para realizar las actividades extras.
