6 Think Math! Chapter 1 Dear Family, Your child is practicing addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division as he or she completes Cross Number Puzzles and Input-Output Machines. Students will also work with negative numbers and look for and record patterns in pairs of numbers. As students complete Cross Number Puzzles, they will realize that the order and grouping of numbers in addition does not affect the sum. The thick lines in the puzzles indicate that the quantities on both sides are equal, just as equals signs do. Complete the Cross Number Puzzle. Think: , so 83 is the missing number , or , so 18 is the missing number , or , so 146 is the missing number. Algebra: Machines and Puzzles VOCABULARY Here are some of the vocabulary words we use in class: Input A number that is the start of a process and is then acted on Output A number that is the result of some actions on an input Variable A letter or symbol that stands for one or more numbers Complete the input-output table. 14 Think Math! Chapter 3 Dear Family, Your child is studying factors, multiples, and divisibility. These topics focus on how numbers are built up from and can be broken down into factors and help your child explore the relationships among numbers. These three questions are all really the same question posed in different ways: Is 56 divisible by 3? Is 3 a factor of 56? Is 56 a multiple of 3? Your child is also learning that prime factors are the building blocks used to make composite numbers. Here are some of the types of problems your child is solving about factors, multiples, and primes. What is the mystery number? Greater than 40 but less than 70 Multiple of 8 Digit sum: 10 Use the clues in order. It could be any number from 41 through 69. It could be 48, 56, or 64. Only 64 has a digit sum of 10. What are all the factors of 36? Factor pairs are numbers whose product is the given number: 1 and 36, 2 and 18, 3 and 12, 4 and 9, 6 and 6, or 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 9, 12, 18, and 36 (9 factors in all). Only square numbers have an odd number of factors. What are the prime factors of 24? The prime factors of 24 are 2, 2, 2, and 3. Use the practice activities here and the game on the back of this page to help your child understand factors and multiples. Encourage your child to play this game with you and other members of your family. 18 Think Math! Chapter 4 Dear Family, Your child is beginning to study fractions. Students will approach fractions in two ways throughout the chapter. Fractions represent the operations of multiplication and division. For example, to find 3_ of 20, you can 4 either multiply 20 by 3 and then divide the product by 4 or divide 20 by 4 and then multiply the quotient by 3. Either way, the result is 15. Fractions represent numbers that can be shown, like every other number, on a number line. There are many ways of representing the same number. For example, 1_ is equivalent to 2_ and 3_ and A fraction greater than 1 can be represented as a fraction in which the numerator is greater than the denominator or as a mixed number. Find 2 of 25. Multiply Divide So, 2 of 25 is Compare 4 2. Find common denominators So, Represent 10 as a mixed number So, Locate 6 on the number line Since 6_ is equivalent to 3_, the two fractions are 8 4 at the same point on the number line. Use the examples here and the game on the back of this page to help your child understand fractions. Sincerely, Equivalence and Comparison of Fractions VOCABULARY Here are some of the vocabulary words we use in class: Equivalent Having the same value Common Denominator A number that may be evenly divided by each of the denominators of a given group of fractions Improper Fraction A fraction where the numerator is larger than the denominator School-Home Connection Teacher Resource Book SHC13

19 Fraction Arrangements For this activity, you will need 18 index cards, a marker, and a stopwatch or watch with a second hand. Take turns being the timekeeper. The timekeeper will time you. Your score is the number of seconds it takes to make a true number sentence. Here s an example: You choose these cards: You could make many number sentences. Here are two you could make. Play until everyone has had a chance to play the same number of times. The player with the lowest score wins. SHC14 Teacher Resource Book School-Home Connection

22 Think Math! Chapter 5 Dear Family, Your child will be studying multiplication of large numbers. Your child will follow a systematic way to multiply and record his or her work in a variety of ways, depending on what seems logical to the child. Each multiplication will make use of place value. So, 2-digit numbers will be thought of as tens and ones, 3-digit numbers as hundreds, tens, and ones, and so on. Here are two ways your child could multiply Use an area model. Add the partial products. Recording Multi-Digit Multiplication VOCABULARY Here are some of the vocabulary words we use in class: Partial Product The product of parts (usually parts of different place values) of each factor Use a puzzle. Write a vertical record. Combined Partial Product A combination of any of the partial products (but not the final product) of a multiplication problem Use the game on the back of this page to help your child understand multi-digit multiplication. 23 Out of the Blue Play this game with a family member. You ll need: slips of paper numbered 1 through 9 paper bag calculator Here s how to play: 1Put the slips of paper in a paper bag. One player picks 3 slips of paper to make a target number. Use the first pick as the hundreds digit, the second pick as the tens digit, and the third pick as the ones digit. 2Each player finds 2 numbers in the cloud whose product is as close to the target number as possible, but not greater than the target number. 3When both players have picked their numbers, check the multiplication with a calculator. If both products are less than the target number, the player whose product is closer gets 1 point. If only one player s product is greater than the target number, the other player gets 1 point. If both products are greater than the target number, neither player gets a point. 4Return the 3 slips of paper and pick 3 more from the bag. Make another target number, and play again. 5Play until someone scores 5 points and wins the game! Here s a sample game: The target number is 529. You choose 52 and 8 from the cloud. Your product is 416. The other player chooses 23 and 27 and gets a product of 621. The other player s product is greater than 529, but your product is not. So, you get 1 point.
