6 Gender in Spanish In Spanish, all nouns are either masculine or feminine. Generally, words that end in a dad or ción are feminine and words that end in o are masculine. Words that do not end in a o or ción must be memorized. However, if the word is represents a person, that person s gender will usually match. Circle all of the feminine words. Box all of the masculine words. 1. chico 2. chica 3. maestra 4. maestro 5. familia 6. escuela 7. canción 8. apartamento 9. casa 10. año 11. mujer 12. señor If a noun is feminine, then the adjectives that describe it must also be feminine. Definite and indefinite articles must also match the gender. La casa es bonita. If a noun is masculine, then the adjectives that describe it must also be masculine. Definite and indefinite articles must also match the gender. El apartamento es bonito. For each noun, write the appropriate definite article (el or la). 11. mujer 12. muchacho 13. muchacha 14. familia 15. maestro 16. doctora 17. comunidad 18. libro página 6
7 More on Gender Combine each set of words to form a complete sentence. Remember, gender MUST match between the noun, the definite article (D.A.), and the adjective. Ejemplo: D.A. / muchacha / ser / bonito la muchacha es bonita 1. D.A. / familia / ser / rico 2. D.A. / señor / ser / feo 3. D.A. / maestra / ser / bonito 4. D.A. / libro / ser / viejo 5. D.A. / amigo / ser / inteligente página 7

Singular (you) Plural (y all) friendly tú vosotros / vosotras polite usted (Ud.) ustedes (Uds.) Note: Ud. is the abbreviation for usted. Uds. is the abbreviation for ustedes.
