2 PARISH INFORMATION EUCHARISTIC ADORATION: The first Friday of each month from 12:00 Noon to 7pm. Exposition at 12 Noon: Adoration until 7pm: Benediction at 7:00pm BAPTISMS: All Parents must register at the rectory for the Baptism and preparation class ahead of time. English Baptisms: Are on the 1 st & 4 th Sunday of each month at 2:30 pm.. The Baptismal preparation class is required for parents and godparents and is held on the 4 th Monday of the month at 7:00pm in the rectory meeting room. (holidays excluded) Spanish Baptisms: Are on the 2 nd & 4 th Saturday of each month at 1:00 pm. The Baptismal preparation class is required for parents and godparents and is held on the Monday before Baptisms at 7:00pm in the rectory meeting room. (holidays excluded) WEDDINGS: Arrangements should be made at the rectory with a parish priest or deacon at least four months before the wedding. Normally weddings are for parishioners, but special situations will be considered. We recommend a Wedding Mass for practicing Catholics. We recommend a Wedding Ceremony for non-practicing Catholics or mixed religion couples. Both are valid marriages. A priest is necessary for a Wedding Mass. QUINCEANERA: To have a Quinceanera Mass, a candidate must have been Confirmed & received First Holy Communion. Others will have the Prayer Service & Blessing. A deacon can preside at a Prayer Service & Blessing. All Quinceaneras must be baptized as Catholic Christians. Arrangements must be made at the rectory with a priest or deacon at least two months before. FUNERALS: Arrangements can usually be made with the rectory office by the funeral director. We have the Book of Funeral Readings at the rectory for families who wish to look them over. A priest or deacon will usually attend the wake. SICK CALLS: If someone needs to be Anointed, please call the rectory when they are seriously ill. Don t wait too long! If someone homebound wishes Holy Communion, please call the rectory. 3 Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time LOOKING AHEAD TO LISTEN TODAY In next week s first reading the prophet Jeremiah will say, on behalf of God, Woe to the shepherds who mislead and scatter the flock of my pasture (Jeremiah 23:1). Today Amaziah, a priest of King Jeroboam, represents the archetype of this kind of shepherd. Against this sort of uncaring shepherd, God calls a real lifevocation shepherd and a true shepherdprophet, Amos. The voice of Amos is one of the harshest in the prophetic literature, but the harshness seems to be necessary to counteract the misleading and scattering of the flock that the God of Israel was observing. Amos left his vocation as a shepherd of sheep and dresser of sycamore trees to become a shepherd of the flock of Israel and a redresser of the wrongs committed by those whose status as priest or prophet of Israel had led them astray from their own vocation. Another prophet, Jeremiah, would tell of the coming shepherd king, anointed from the house of David, who will come to restore justice and righteousness throughout the land. LOOKING BACK TO LOOK AHEAD It is important to connect this week s Gospel with last week s. Jesus had just encountered a severe lack of faith in his family and neighbors, who took offense at him. So severe was their reaction to him that he couldn t work much in the way of healing or other mighty deeds. Yet immediately upon the heels of that incident, he summons the Twelve and sends them out ( apostle means one who is sent ). Jesus remains stalwart in the pursuit of the vocation he was given by God: to recover the lost sheep of the house of Israel. We have to admire the Twelve, who like Amos have left their own livelihoods as they are sent out on a rather intimidating new mission. Our admiration ought to increase when we realize that this takes place immediately after the rather humiliating scene Jesus had just endured. But having witnessed Jesus face rejection and still persevere in his vocation, they must have been made bold as he told them of the rejection they would face when he sent them out. Christ, through the Spirit and the waters of baptism, still sends us out on mission. This is our first calling. Let us, strengthened by the prophetic witness of Christ and the Twelve, be faithful to that calling. Stewardship is a way of life, a way of thanking God for all His blessings by returning a portion of the time, talent and treasure allotted to us. Stewardship is based on the spiritual principles of the Old Testament and the teachings of Jesus; and where it has been implemented, both givers and receivers lives have been changed. Stewardship engenders a spirituality that deepens our relationship with Jesus. Stewardship involves intentional, planned and proportionate giving of our time, talent and treasure. Give and it shall be given to you. Good measure pressed down, shaken together, running over, will they pour into the fold of your garment. For the measure you measure with will be measured back to you. (Luke 6:38). Above all, let your love for one another be constant, for love covers a multitude of sins. Be mutually hospitable without complaining. As generous distributors of God s manifold grace, put your gifts at the service of one another, each in the measure you have received. Decimoquinto Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario MIRANDO ADELANTE PARA ESCUCHAR HOY La próxima semana en la primera lectura el profeta Jeremías dirá, en nombre de Dios: Ay de los pastores que dispersan y dejan perecer a las ovejas de mi rebaño! Amasías, un sacerdote del rey Jeroboam, representa hoy el arquetipo de esta clase de pastores. Frente a esos pastores desinteresados, Dios llama a un pastor con esa vocación de por vida y un verdadero pastorprofeta: Amós. La voz de Amós es una de las más duras en la literatura profética, pero la dureza parece necesaria para contrarrestar la confusión y dispersión del rebaño que observaba el Dios de Israel. Amós dejó su vocación como pastor de ovejas y cuidador de sicómoros para ser un pastor del rebaño de Israel y buscar corregir los errores cometidos por aquellos cuya posición como sacerdotes o pastores de Israel los habían alejado de su vocación. Otro profeta, Jeremías, dirá de la venida del pastor-rey, ungido de la casa de David, que vendrá para restaurar la justicia y rectitud en toda la tierra. MIRAR ATRÁS PARA MIRAR ADELANTE Es importante vincular el Evangelio de esta semana con el de la semana pasada. Jesús encontró que su familia y vecinos tenían poca fe y se sintieron ofendidos por Él. Tan negativa fue la reacción en su contra que no pudo hacer muchas curaciones ni tampoco grandes milagros. Sin embargo, inmediatamente después, Jesús reúne a los Doce y los envía ( apóstol quiere decir enviado ). Jesús se mantiene firme en la búsqueda de la vocación otorgada por Dios: rescatar a las ovejas perdidas de la casa de Israel. Tenemos que admirar a los Doce, que como Amós dejaron su modo de vida al ser enviados en una nueva misión más bien intimidante. Nuestra admiración debe aumentar al saber que este hecho tiene lugar inmediatamente después de la humillante situación que Jesús había afrontado. Pero al haber sido testigos del rechazo contra Jesús, que aún así perseveró en su vocación, los apóstoles deben haberse sentido fortalecidos cuando les habló del rechazo que ellos mismos afrontarían. Cristo, por medio del Espíritu Santo y el agua del bautismo, nos envía a cumplir una misión. Este es nuestro primer llamado. Fortalecidos por los testigos proféticos de Cristo y por los Doce, seamos fieles a ese llamado.
