John the Baptist appeared, preaching in the desert of Judea and saying, Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand! The first reading explains an image of what the kingdom of God will be: The baby shall play by the cobra s den, and the child laid his hand on the adder s lair. There shall be no harm or ruin on my entire holy mountain; for the earth shall be filled with knowledge of the Lord. Saint Paul instructs that we meet the presence of God in each other. Welcome one another, then, as Christ welcomed you, for the glory of God. On Tuesday, December 10, there will a Penance Service to help us to prepare. Many priests from the deanery will be here to offer you a chance to repent and experience what Saint Paul says, By the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope. This week the Church celebrates two feasts of the Blessed Virgin Mary. December 9th is the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Patron Feast Day of the United States of America. This year with it falling on Monday, it is not a holy day of obligation. December 12th is the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe, Patroness of all Americas, North and South. Catholic Online tells us, When we reflect on the feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe we learn two important lessons, one of faith and one of understanding. Missionaries who first came to Mexico with the Conquistadors had little success in the beginning. After nearly a generation, only a few hundred Native Mexicans had converted to the Christian faith. Whether they simply did not understand what the missionaries had to offer or whether they resented these people who made them slaves, Christianity was not popular among the native people. Then in 1531 miracles began to happen. Jesus' own mother appeared to humble Juan Diego. The signs -- of the roses, of the uncle miraculously cured of a deadly illness and especially of her beautiful image on Juan's mantle -- convinced the people there was something to be considered in Christianity. Within a short time, six million Native Mexicans had themselves baptized as Christians. The first lesson is that God has chosen Mary to lead us to Jesus. No matter what critics may say of the devotion of Mexicans (and Mexican descendants) to Our Lady of Guadalupe, they owe their Christianity to her influence. If it were not for her, they would not know her son, and so they are eternally grateful. The second lesson we take from Mary herself. Mary appeared to Juan Diego not as a European Madonna, but as a beautiful Aztec princess speaking to him in his own Aztec language. If we want to help someone appreciate the gospel we bring, we must appreciate the culture and the mentality in which they live their lives. By understanding them, we can help them to understand and know. Yours in Christ, Father John Va can Ministry to Families Survey Pope Francis has requested that an anonymous survey be completed by as many Catholics as possible in regard to ministering to families. In October of 2014, Pope Francis will meet with bishops from around the world to discuss the survey results along with the various pastoral challenges to consider when ministering to families. Juan el Bautista aparece, predicando en el desierto de Judea diciendo, Arrepiéntanse, porque el reino del cielo está cerca! La primera lectura explica una imagen de lo que debería ser el reino de Dios: El bebé jugará en la guarida de la cobra, y el niño colocará sus manos en la guarida de la serpiente. No habrá daño o ruina en mi entera montaña santa; porque la tierra se llenará con el conocimiento del Señor. San Pablo nos instruye que encontremos la presencia de Dios en cada uno. Darnos la bienvenida unos a otros, así, como Cristo nos dio la bienvenida, para la Gloria de Dios. El martes, 10 de diciembre, habrá un Servicio Penitencial para ayudarnos a prepararnos. Muchos sacerdotes del decanato estarán aquí para ofrecerle la oportunidad de arrepentirse y experimentar lo que San Pablo dijo, Con el incentivo de las Escrituras nosotros podemos tener esperanza. Esta semana la Iglesia celebra dos fiestas de la Virgen María. El 9 de diciembre es la Solemnidad de la Inmaculada Concepción de la Santísima Virgen María, día de fiesta de la Patrona de los Estados Unidos de América. Este año cayendo en día lunes, no es un día santo de obligación. El 12 de diciembre es la fiesta de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe, Patrona de todas las Américas, norte y sur. Católicos en Línea nos dice, Cuando reflexionamos en la fiesta de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe aprendemos dos importantes lecciones, una de fe y otra de entendimiento. Los primeros misioneros que vinieron a México con los conquistadores tuvieron poco éxito al principio. Después de casi una generación, solo unos pocos nativos mexicanos se habían convertido a la fe Cristiana. Ya sea que simplemente no entendían lo que los misioneros tenían para ofrecer o que resentían a estas personas que los habían hecho esclavos, la Cristiandad no era popular entre la gente nativa. Luego en 1531 los milagros empezaron a suceder. La propia madre de Jesús se le apareció al humilde Juan Diego. Las señales de las rosas, la milagrosa curación del tío mortalmente enfermo y especialmente la bella imagen en la tilma de Juan Diego convencieron a la gente que había algo que debería considerarse en la Cristiandad. Dentro de poco tiempo, seis millones de nativos mexicanos se habían bautizado como cristianos. La primera lección es que Dios ha escogido a María para guiarnos a Jesús. No importa lo que los críticos digan acerca de la devoción de los mexicanos (y descendientes de mexicanos) acerca de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe, ellos deben su Cristiandad a su influencia. Si no hubiera sido por ella, ellos no conocerían a su hijo, y por eso ellos están eternamente agradecidos. La segunda lección la tomamos de María misma. María se le apareció a Juan Diego no como una Madonna europea, sino como una bella princesa Azteca hablándole en su propio lenguaje azteca. Si nosotros deseamos ayudar a que se aprecie el evangelio que llevamos, debemos apreciar la cultura y la mentalidad en la cual ellos viven sus vidas. Al comprenderlos, nosotros podemos ayudarlos a entender y conocer.
