Nybo The GAHCC welcomed Antonia Warren as the new Director of Economic Development June 1. No stranger to the GAHCC, Antonia joined as a member with her own business, AW International Real Estate, in She was also a member of the International Business Committee for a year. A native Spaniard, Antonia has lived in Austin since Using her own international relocation experience as the basis of her business, she has helped clients from Mexico, South America, Spain, and other European countries. Antonia plays a similar role in her new position at the Chamber. The two day seminar consists of information about how relocation can be achieved, the benefits of the Chamber, and what Austin has to offer as a place to live. Experts in immigration, taxes, and business are recruited to lead the presentations. When she founded her business, Antonia sought out the Hispanic Chamber. I joined because I had clients with Hispanic backgrounds, said Antonia. To me, the Chamber would understand how my clients do business and how I do business. Shopping at Austin area businesses helps support our local economy, and also helps create new jobs within the community. Most local businesses reinvest the money you spend right back into the community, typically at $0.45 for every dollar. Nybo I am often asked, Why should I own a home? or How do I know when the time is right to buy a home? The right time to own a home is now, and the two most significant advantages of owning a home are the Mortgage Credit Certificate and the down payment assistance programs, both available through the Texas Department of Housing and Community Affairs. Bond Program 77 offers two types of mortgage loans to first time homebuyers. The assisted loan is a two-part mortgage loan. The first mortgage provides an interest rate slightly higher than the average market interest rate, while the down payment assistance and closing costs become the second mortgage, with a 0% interest rate for 30 years. The alternative unassisted loan does not include down payment assistance or closing costs, but does have an interest rate a bit lower than current market interest rates. While down payment assistance is a huge help in buying a new home, an advantage to owning the home is the annual tax credit through a Mortgage Credit Certificate. Available for the individual or family first time homebuyer, this tax credit is provided yearly based on the mortgage interest paid. 6 You Never Know When That Kodak Moment is Going to Present Itself By: Gene Chavez, Photography ByChavez, LLC I ve always had some kind of camera in hand, but in 2007 I started shooting live music when my daughter, singer/songwriter Gina Chavez, had her first paying gig. In 2010 I was selected to be on the SXSW Photo Crew, specializing in both Interactive Panels and Live Music Venues; 2012 was my third SXSW tour. I prefer shooting live music, meetings and galas, special events, anywhere headshots, and on location photography. My M.O. is the compelling collage --a ménage of images, in one image, that tells the story. DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY TIPS: Whatever camera you own, ALWAYS set it at the HIGHEST resolution possible. In the world of digital photography, you can always CROP-IN the Rule of Thirds during your post-shoot processing--don t waste time looking for the perfectly framed image when you re capturing the moment. If you re looking to buy a Point & Shoot that has a long zoom capability, remember the difference between OPTICAL and DIGI- TAL zoom--optical is preferred. If your Point & Shoot has both OPTICAL and DIGITAL ZOOM, remember that when you go past the OPTICAL ZOOM line, your images will have a LOT more noise. When you buy SD cards, buy CLASS 10--they are the FASTEST. If you like FREE photo editing software, learn how to use Google s Picasa--it s a great tool. 7 Six Social Media Tools to Help You Get Free Tax Information IRS Summertime Tax Tip The IRS uses a variety of technologies to help you get the tax information you need. Here are six ways the IRS uses social media to share information on tax changes, initiatives, products and services: 1. IRS2Go 2.0 IRS s smartphone application allows you to check your refund status, get tax updates and follow the IRS via Twitter. IRS2Go 2.0 is available in the Apple App store for iphone or ipod touch devices and in the GooglePlay store for Android devices. 2. YouTube IRSvideos YouTube Channel offers short, informative clips on various tax-related topics. The videos are available in English, American Sign Language and Spanish. 3. Twitter IRS tweets include tax-related announcements, news for tax professionals and updates for job seekers. Follow IRSnews. 4. Facebook IRS has Facebook pages that post tax information for individuals, tax professionals, and for those needing help resolving long-standing tax issues with the IRS. 5. Audio files for Podcasts These short audio recordings provide information on tax-related topics -- one per podcast. The audio files (along with transcripts) are available on itunes or through the Multimedia Center on IRS.gov. 6. Widgets These tools, which can be placed on websites, blogs or social media networks, direct people to visit IRS.gov for information. The widgets feature the latest tax initiatives and programs and can be found on Marketing Express, the marketing site that allows IRS partners and tax preparers to customize their IRS communications products. As a reminder, the IRS uses these tools to share information with you. Do not post any personal information on social media sites, especially your Social Security number or other confidential information. 9 Remember the days when we could say Life s Too Short? By: Jonathan Barrera, New York Life In 1930, the average life expectancy was 60 years of age. Fifty years later (1980) the life expectancy was 74 years of age. Today life expectancy is at 80 years of age. What will it be in another 20/40 years? According to actuaries we are facing a max average of 120 years of age. The fact is, medical advances are clearly allowing us to live longer. Could you imagine living your whole life thinking you were going to be around for a certain period of time and you actually lived another years? It s often this is forgotten or ignored because of its overwhelming nature. We face government retirement programs that were not created for the times leaving many of us to act responsibly for our own personal situation, sometimes for others who have been effected by various unsuccessful retirement solutions. Unfortunately, it takes time, education and responsibility to do this on your own. It s not as bad as you think. But you must plan to succeed, not plan to fail. So what do we do? As you take the time to think about your financial future, I ask you think of me. I can help you understand how you can prepare for this gap and live financially stable for today and tomorrow.
