I know this is true but I also know that my life can get busy enough that I miss seeing all the love and grace that surrounds me. Does this ever happen to you? Please mark your calendar and plan on joining us on Saturday, October 18, 2014, for our annual San Gabriel Regional Congress, where our theme this year is Abundant Love! Regional Congress is a great chance for our local churches to gather together, pray together and learn together. This day is not just for catechists, but for all who want to spend time contemplating our faith and sharing in God s abundant love. This past April I started a new ministry as your San Gabriel Regional Coordinator. I am excited to have this opportunity to be on this journey of faith with all of you and to be of support to you in your very vital ministry for the people of God in your parish. 5 Youth Track: Teen Peer Leaders YT 1 BE MY DISCIPLES: INSPIRING OUR PARISHES TO APOSTOLIC MISSION From day one, it s been clear that Pope Francis is a man on a mission. His vision for the Church is based on the simple yet powerful truth that the Gospel is "GOOD NEWS" that yearns to be shared with the world. Come and see how God calls us to missionary discipleship. You will walk away with a better idea of how to inspire your parish to become agents of God's mission. Sergio Lopez is a former youth minister and worship leader from the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. As a passionate husband, musician, and speaker he has dedicated his ministry to helping everyday Catholics make a difference in the world. Sergio has an MA in Religious Studies from Mount St. Mary s College in Los Angeles. He has worked for Catholic Relief Services since YT 2 CAN I GET A WITNESS? We all have our own story to share, but sometimes it's hard to find the right words. We tend to forget that simple story-telling is how we communicate every day with family, friends, and even strangers. So how can we use our stories to spread the Gospel? Learn how to find your faith story and discover what it means to be a witness for Christ. Sarah Swisher has been a leader on the Signed and Anointed to Witness (S.A.W.) retreat for the past eight years. She focuses on youth leadership development in the Santa Barbara Pastoral Region, and has helped out at numerous parishes throughout the Archdiocese in the areas of Confirmation & Youth Ministry. She received her B.A. in Theological Studies in 2009 and her M.A. in Pastoral Theology in 2013, both from Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles. Sarah is currently the Director of Campus Ministry at St. Bonaventure High School in Ventura, CA. YT 3 EFFECTIVE LEADERSHIP: IDENTIFYING GIFTS AND TALENTS TO GET THINGS DONE Being a part of a team involves learning how to navigate what each team member brings to the table. Come learn how to identify gifts and put to work your talents and the gifts of others. Then discuss how to coordinate the talents in our communities to put together a successful summer dance or put an end to violence in our neighborhoods. Nick Masero has been working in teen ministry for more than a decade. He served at St. Monica's in Santa Monica and St. John Fisher in Rancho Palos Verdes. He is on the Christian Leadership Institution (CLI) director's team as well as offering workshops at regional congresses. Nick just finished law school and looks forward to beginning his career as a civil rights litigator this winter. SESSION 1 9:30 AM 11:00 AM 1-01 ALL MY STUDENTS SHOWED UP! NOW WHAT? BRINGING THE MIRACLES OF JESUS TO LIFE IN YOUR SESSIONS Students faith and spirituality are developed when they are involved in interactive and tactile activities that have been integrated into your sessions. The workshop will focus on creative ideas and techniques that can be immediately used in your learning setting with elementary aged children. You will take an active role at this workshop and come away with lots of practical ideas. Helen Marie Slaton, a Master Catechist, serves in ministry at Our Lady of Malibu parish. Her creative ideas have been published nationally. She believes that the faith is passed on through tactile hands on experiences of the faith knowledge being presented WHAT IS THAT RCIA THING? Have you ever wondered what it means when people talk about RCIA or "the Rite"? This workshop gives a brief history of adult initiation and the form it takes today. Great for beginners or those just starting. Fr. Christopher Bazyouros was born and grew up in the San Gabriel Valley. He entered St. John's Seminary after receiving a Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry. Ordained in 2003, he is serving in the Archdiocese at the Office of Religious Education in Adult Formation. He also serves the Archdiocesan Liturgical Commission NONVIOLENCE IS NEEDED IN OUR HOMES, SCHOOLS AND WORLD AND IT STARTS IN OUR HEARTS Pax Christi is the official Catholic peace movement. Using the vow of nonviolence and principles, we will explore: bulling, self image along with gang and military violence. What is Jesus and Pope Francis calling us to? Fr. Christopher Ponnet, ordained for Los Angeles Archdiocese 1983, is Pastor and chaplain at St. Camilus Center for Spiritual Care. He also serves as Director of Office of Catholic HIV/AIDS Ministry, Board of Death Penalty Focus, Pax Christi USA, Angel Interfaith Network, MLGC Ministry with Lesbian and Gay Catholics and Interfaith Communities United for Justice and Peace KEEPING STUDENTS ENGAGED: MAKING CATECHESIS FUN, LIVELY AND MEMORABLE Let's pray, tell stories, sing songs and do crafts as we discover new ways to share the joy of the gospel with your young disciples in grades 1 though 6. Kathy Ritza is currently the Director of Faith Formation at St. Denis Church in Diamond Bar, CA. She has over 25 years of experience in catechesis as a parent, grandparent, catechist, DRE, retreat director and Master Catechist for the Archdiocese of LA. 6 SESSION 1 9:30 AM 11:00 AM 1-05 FIRE IN THE HEART: FAN THE FLAME The generations of today and their families are hungry for meaning, for identity and for acceptance. We recognize that the challenge for religious educators to share the richness of our faith tradition to learners at every stage have never been more demanding. In the words of Paul VI, we need, Fire in the heart, words on our lips and prophecy in the glance in order to light the fire in our homes, our schools, our parishes. The session will attempt to both inspire, provide ideas, and advocate for creative approaches in this enterprise. Sr. Edith Prendergast is currently the Director of Religious Education of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles and directs the Annual Religious Education Congress. This event attracts over 40,000 participants annually. She holds a Doctorate in Ministry from Claremont School of Theology, and a Master's Degree in Theology from Boston College. She is a frequent speaker nationally and locally and has written and contributed to several articles on Spirituality and Catechesis PARENT & CHILD RECONCILIATION AND FIRST COMMUNION RETREATS Retreats are a beautiful way to help children prepare to receive the Sacraments. They offer an opportunity to journey into the dessert with Jesus and prayerfully spend time with our Lord, away from the busyness of life. Children receive great spiritual benefits by walking that journey with their parents. Come and discover wonderful ways to plan and facilitate retreats that will spiritually prepare them for Reconciliation and First Communion. Cristina Alba is the Director of Religious Education at St. John Vianney in Hacienda Heights. Her prior work as an elementary school teacher as well as a catechist for the past 15 years have helped her develop a successful Family Catechesis program at the parish. She is also currently involved in the Advanced Catechetical Ministries through the Archdiocese of Los Angeles HOW A SCIENTIST VIEWS RELIGION, GOD, AND BELIEF Rabbi Lotker discusses how his religious faith is informed and strengthened by his scientific training and 30 year career as a physicist. He will discuss the evidence for God s existence, the truth of the Bible, the question of how a good and loving God can allow evil and tragedy in the world and the question of why be religious. Rabbi Michael Lotker comes to us with a wealth of experience. A Phi Beta Kappa/Magna Cum Laude physicist, he spent the bulk of his first career in the alternative energy business, working in wind power, solar and geothermal energy. About 500 of the windmills that are spinning in Palm Springs, California were financed and installed by a company that Mike was President of. In 2003, he was ordained as a rabbi at Hebrew Union College in Los Angeles, where he also received his Master of Hebrew Letters degree. He is presently Rabbi Emeritus of Temple Ner Ami in Camarillo, California and Community Rabbi for the Jewish Federation of Ventura County. In addition to his studies, Mike has published a book for the Paulist Press entitled "A Christian's Guide to Judaism." 1-08 WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE AN ADULT DISCIPLE? Our world and our faith demand an adult Christianity. Growth beyond a faith that may have served us well in youth is necessary to meet the demands of our adult lives and our contemporary world, if we are to truly be a disciple of Christ. How can we challenge adults to deepen their relationship with Jesus Christ and not stagnate in a faith that no longer serves them? Many classic and contemporary spiritual writers describe a critical transition on the journey toward the development of an adult faith and spiritual maturity. How do we identify this, and how can adults in this transition be encouraged, nourished, and supported by our ministries? We will explore what an adult growing in faith looks like, and how we might nurture a community of adult disciples. Douglas Leal is the Coordinator for Adult Faith Formation and Young Adult Ministry with the Office of Religious Education, and was formerly the Director of Ministries for St. Sebastian Church in West LA. He is also a professional actor and director and previously worked as a management consultant. Douglas received his MA from the Boston College School of Theology and Ministry. He is the author of the skill-building book for lectors, Stop Reading and Start Proclaiming! 1-09 HOW WE CATECHIZE AND WHAT WE CATECHIZE Jesus WITNESSED the existence of Father. He came to witness what is "of the Father." The Holy Spirit empowers us more so today to be loving Christ's to the world - to find meaning in all the nonsense! Christ's Catholic catechists are being asked to "Show me YOUR experience of God! Show me YOUR experience of the Joy, Love and Happiness that come with FAITH! Show me where you've found the Peace of Christ! Where's the Joy; YOUR Joy! Where is your excitement? Where is your Zeal? How is it real for you? I need a Faith that inflates and not deflates! " Fr. Ken Deasy joined Saint John s Seminary and went on to serve as a parish priest at Saint Monica, Saint Bernardine of Siena and Saint Agatha, where he was pastor for 11 years. Outside of parish ministry, Fr. Ken became more involved in global missionary work and detention ministry. More recently, he has served as director of the Archdiocesan Holy Childhood Association. That involvement led him to travel to impoverished areas of the world, most notably, Haiti and South Sudan. Throughout his priestly ministry Fr. Ken has been an impassioned advocate for youth and young adults and participated in and/or directed over 50 retreats for that age group. He is also a published author, most recently of the provocatively named title: Get Off the Cross, Someone Else Needs the Wood WONDER-FILLED BEAUTY - AS SEEN BY SCIENCE AND FAITH Sharing the wonders of science with the heart of faith. Tom Nolan studies Earth from Space at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Looking at God's universe through a microscope and a telescope, he sees Divine Majesty and beauty in all of nature. Tom is a Eucharistic Minister at Immaculate Conception parish in Monrovia and has served on several Cursillo Teams since He is also active in Matthew Kelly's Dynamic Catholic evangelization efforts. 7 SESSION 1 9:30 AM 11:00 AM 1-11 HOW ARE WE USING OUR GIFTS TO SPREAD "THE JOY OF THE GOSPEL" TO ALL THOSE WE TEACH? In light of Pope Francis's "Evangelii Gaudium" or "The Joy of the Gospel" are we as catechists and teachers using our gifts to reflect the message of joy when we teach our faith to others? Do we understand what that message of joy really means for all of us? Let's look at how that understanding can help shine a new light on the gifts that we have been given as catechists and teachers of our Catholic Faith! Dana Couso has been the Director of Religious Education for the past 13 yrs at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in Santa Clarita but has been teaching Religious Education for 35 yrs. A Master Catechist for 7 yrs. she is also the Director of Adult Faith Formation at her parish in which she also teaches. She has been married for 40 yrs to a wonderfully patient man with whom she has 4 children and 5 grandchildren HOW TO CREATE AND IMPLEMENT ADULT FAITH FORMATION--- FOR PARENTS AND SPONSORS The new evangelization calls us to a deeper relationship with Jesus Christ. Unique challenges are presented to parishes with families of high school age youth preparing for Confirmation. Family life, the turbulence of adolescence with practical applications for creating and implementing adult faith formation will be the focus of this session. Warren G. Kunkle is presently an educational consultant for William H. Sadlier Inc. He is a Master Catechist and volunteers in his parish as the High School Confirmation Parent Formation Coordinator. He has also served as a Parish Administrator, Youth Minister/Confirmation Coordinator and a variety of other ministries over the past 25 years. With his wife, Elga and their three teen-age sons, a broader understanding of the realities of our domestic church and its unique challenges, will be fore-front in this presentation THE JOYFUL MYSTERIES: A MODEL FOR MINISTRY Mary is the model for our ministry, living according to the Spirit, listening and pondering on the Word of God and allowing it to transform the everyday circumstances of our lives. Mary leads us to discover the secret of Christian joy, reminding us that Christianity is, first and foremost, evangelization, "good news", which has as its heart and its whole content the person of Jesus Christ, the Word made flesh, the one Savior of the world. - Pope John Paul II Kay Murdy has a Master's Degree in Religious Studies from Mount St. Mary's College, and is a Master Catechist for the Los Angeles Archdiocese. Kay is a member of the teaching and coordinating team of the Catholic Bible Institute co-sponsored by the Archdiocese Office of Religious Education and Loyola Marymount University. Kay has written five books on scripture and spirituality for Resource Publications, and Ligouri Publications. Her novel, Song of the Dove, a story of Mary of Nazareth, was published by ACTA, ENGAGING EVERY LEARNER EVERY TIME: A SIMPLE FORMAT FOR PLANNING ENGAGING FAITH FORMATION This workshop will explore what it means to reach every learner regardless of their learning style. Exploring the 4MAT Learning Cycle and how to apply this cycle to developing faith formation for children, youth, and adults. Dr. Charlotte McCorquodale, from New Orleans, LA has been serving as a lay ecclesial minister for the past 30 years. Since May of 2000, she has served as President of Ministry Training Source (MTS). MTS is a non-profit organization committed to the formation of ministry leaders by providing customized ministry formation solutions using the latest research and technology. Attention is paid to patterns of bullying, family dynamics, treatment, client education and intervention techniques. Paul Brogan, MFT is a Catholic Marriage and Family Therapist in Encino. He also teaches in the Psychology Department at Mount St. Mary s College in Los Angeles.
