2 ST. NORBERT CATHOLIC CHURCH 2 Stewardship Seventh Sunday of Easter 1 Peter 4:13 16 The Light of Contradiction Our faith is at the center of our being. It forms part of our identity. We make decisions based on values we hold, and we cannot act contrary to what we believe without causing ourselves discomfort. To share faith with someone is to share something close to the heart. Intimate friends often worship together and serve together. To pray aloud from the heart is to share something very private how we think of God and how we talk to God. For these reasons, when we meet someone who does not share our faith, the difference can cause strong feelings of distance. In the worst conditions, religious wars have been waged by peoples who think that God is on their side, even though their opponents believe the same. The First Letter of Peter says, If you are insulted for the name of Christ, blessed are you, for the Spirit of glory and of God rests upon you. We all prefer to live in harmony with one another, but sometimes differences bring benefits. When someone disagrees with us or disputes with us, we think harder about what we believe. We understand our beliefs better in the light of contradiction. If people insult us for our beliefs, we try to respond with charity. By putting our faith in action, even in the face of opposition, we are true to what we believe and we share it in the way we live. We can experience blessedness even in conflict. Finding this help, especially in devotion to the Blessed Sacrament, he and his brothers praised God for success in converting heretics, reconciling numerous enemies and rebuilding faith in indifferent believers. Catholic saints are holy people and human people who lived extraordinary lives. Each saint the Church honors responded to God's invitation to use his or her unique gifts. God calls each one of us to be a saint. ( Mrs. Debevec is Retiring! As the school year winds down, our parish school is preparing to bid farewell to one of our beloved staff members, Mrs. Sally Debevec, who is retiring after teaching second grade here for 30 years! We celebrate Mrs. Debevec s retirement this Sunday, June 1, with Mass at noon and a reception immediately following in the Ministry Center Hall. While we are sad to say goodbye to this loving and dedicated educator, we praise God for her beautiful service at this school for so many years. Taco Sunday & Mini Boutique Be sure to stop by the Ministry Center next Sunday, June 8, for Taco Sunday and the Christian Service Mini Boutique. Christian Service will be serving delicious homemade tacos, tamales, burritos, taquitos, tostadas and quesadillas. Food will be served from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and the boutique will be open after the 7:30 a.m. Mass until 2 p.m. Coffee & Doughnuts will be available during Boutique hours. Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion All parishioners who serve as Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion (church and homebound) are requested to attend our yearly formation workshop in the church on Monday, June 23, at 7 p.m. OR on Tuesday, June 24, at 10 a.m. All who are interested in joining this ministry are most welcome to attend, especially those who would like to bring the Eucharist to our brothers and sisters who cannot come to Mass. Extraordinary Ministers must be fully initiated Catholics (have received the sacraments of Baptism, Eucharist, and Confirmation), at least 25 years of age, and married in the Church (if married). Weekly Parish Offering Thank you for your continuing support of St. Norbert Parish. For the fiscal year July 1, 2013, to June 30, 2014, our parish budget calls for $27,900 to be donated weekly at the Sunday collection. The collection for Sunday, May 25, was $29, These collections are not only for operating expenses each week, but also for any ongoing repair work, upgrades, etc. to our parish facility. Your regular donations are needed for the good of St. Norbert Parish and the spread of the Gospel.

Veritas Jazz Concert On Saturday, June 14, at 7 p.m., Veritas returns with an outdoor concert of vocal jazz entitled, Singing with a Swing. Come partake of delicious wines and appetizers under starry June skies as you enjoy some of the best music from the 1930s and 1940s. This concert will benefit St. Norbert Music Ministries. The suggested donation for tickets is one for $30.00 and two for $ Tickets are available for purchase at the Ministry Center office. Please see the flyer on the back page of this bulletin for more information. Vacation Bible School We re looking forward to Weird Animals VBS which will be held June 23 27! Our registration has closed. Confirmation letters to all registered families will be mailed out the first week of June. All student volunteers are required to attend the Student Volunteer Retreat on Sunday, June 8, from 1 to 4:30 p.m. in the Family & Youth Center. We d love some help with painting, making decorations, and sorting supplies every Saturday in June from 9 a.m. to 12 noon. We will observe our regular morning weekday Mass schedule on Monday, June 2, Tuesday, June 3, and Wednesday, June 4. There will be Communion Services at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, June 4 (Spanish) and on Thursday, June 5 at 6:15 and 8:30 a.m. in place of the regular weekday Masses. 4 ST. NORBERT CATHOLIC CHURCH 4 Youth & Teen Ministries School of Religious Education The SRE School year has come to a close. Thank you to all those who helped teach and support this Ministry. Your time was invaluable and you were truly a gift from God. SRE Registration Early Bird Registration for the Faith Formation classes officially begins today, June 1. If you have children aged 3 4 (PK) and 5 (K) or children who will be in Grades 1 through 6 in the fall, you will register through the SRE program. Children in Grades 7 and 8 will register through Junior High Ministry. Early Bird registration runs until July 31. The fees go up starting August 1, so please make every effort to register your children early and save. 5 5 JUNE 1, 2014 SEVENTH SUNDAY OF EASTER Faith Formation & Enrichment R.C.I.A. This Thursday, June 5, is the last meeting for our Neophytes. We will talk about Pentecost and the Holy Spirit. Inquiry sessions will continue on Thursday evenings. Those considering becoming a Catholic are invited to come to the Inquiry sessions which also take place on Thursday evenings from 7:30 to 9 in the Ministry Center Library. The Inquiry groups are casual meetings to answer initial questions that people may have, to reflect upon God s presence throughout their lives, and to begin to become familiar with the Sunday scripture readings. If you would like more information, please call Charlene at (714) x114. Anyone who hopes to be received into the Church by Easter next year, 2015, should begin the RCIA process as soon as possible. Adult Faith Formation Easter Study: Resurrection! We will continue our series on Resurrection and Afterlife this Wednesday evening, June 4, at 7:30 p.m. This series will reflect on Catholic belief in the afterlife as revealed in the Gospels, the Letters of St. Paul, and the Book of Revelation. This week s topics will be The Heavenly Jerusalem, based on the Book of Revelation, Chapters 21 and 22, and Ethics, Pedagogy, and the Afterlife, which will conclude the series. These recorded presentations will be given by Professor Candida Moss, a professor of New Testament and Early Christianity at the University of Notre Dame. Each evening we will hear two 25 minute presentations with time for discussion after each section. Our meetings will be from 7:30 to 9 p.m., and it will be helpful for participants to bring a Bible. Prayer & Meditation with Scripture Our prayer group will gather in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel this Tuesday, June 3. This hour of prayer time utilizes varying prayer forms each week, including Lectio Divina, centering prayer, prayer of remembrance, Taizé prayer and Ignatian meditation. The prayer group is facilitated by Sr. Breda and Mary Prather. It is a time to meet with others in quiet and peace away from the busyness and noise of the world. We gather for prayer in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel at 7:30 p.m. Please feel free to join us you are most welcome! Wondering Why This Sunday the Church celebrates the Ascension of the Lord, the post Easter event when the disciples experience the last appearance of the Risen Christ as he returns to the Trinity forever united to the Father and Holy Spirit. This solemn feast used to be called Ascension Thursday, and was celebrated 40 days after Easter, as that is the time given in Acts of the Apostles between the Resurrection and the Ascension. So, why did it change from a Thursday holy day to a Sunday celebration? Bishops have the authority to decide in their own dioceses what Holy Days are observed, and when. In some dioceses, this feast still falls on a Thursday, in our Diocese it is moved to a Sunday. Actually, we do not know what day of the week it was when Jesus ascended into heaven. In John s Gospel it seems to happen very quickly, in conjunction with the Resurrection. Matthew does not specify a time, and Mark does not mention the event at all in the oldest texts of that Gospel, and only in an addendum which was added on to the Gospel probably in the second century and written by someone other than the original author. Luke s gospel mentions the ascension of Jesus as the last of his appearances, but without mentioning a time frame, but the same author continues his story in the Book of Acts of the Apostles, which is where the 40 days appears. Forty is one of those mystical numbers that appear in scripture. It is not intended as a literal number falling between 39 and 41. The number 40 is always a sign of some transforming event, of completion, or promises fulfilled. Basically, it just means when the time was completed. We can find many incidents of the number 40 in the Bible: the days and nights of rain in the story of Noah, the years the Israelites spent in the desert, the number of days Moses was on Mt. Sinai, the time it took Elijah to walk to Mt. Horeb, the number of days Jesus fasted in the desert. In the ascension story, Jesus physical time on earth is completed, he returns to his eternal reign in heaven and commissions his disciples to continue his ministry of healing, forgiveness and love. But, without the immediate physical presence of Jesus, that may have seemed an impossible goal. The disciples are uncertain how to begin, and go back to the upper room where they had celebrated the last supper with Jesus, secluding themselves in prayer. We hear in Acts of the Apostles that they prayed together until the Jewish Feast of Pentecost. That would have been nine days of prayer, which is the origin of our Catholic devotional tradition of Novenas. Before he left the disciples, Jesus had made a promise. They would not be left orphans, but rather he would send the Holy Spirit upon them, who would continue to teach them, and who would remind them of everything that Jesus taught and did. They did not know what that meant, so they waited and they prayed. And, when the Spirit came upon them they were filled with energy to set out on their mission of telling the whole world about Jesus, a mission that continues today in all of us. In our lives we all face impossible missions at times. We may all sometimes feel that the Lord has left us alone, and we may feel inadequate, frightened, and weak. But Jesus promised that God would continue to dwell with us in the Person of the Holy Spirit, and when we pray and wait for the presence of the Spirit in trust and hope, we find the way, we are led to where we need to be, and the impossible becomes possible, with God through Christ in the power of the Holy Spirit.

Eduardo se lo dijo a Violeta. Violeta se lo comunicó a Clara y a Camilo. Y así se fue corriendo la voz. No, no se trataba de compartir el último chisme. Era una cadena de oración, que iba añadiendo nuevas intenciones a la lista, para pedirle al Espíritu que inspirara el corazón de muchas personas y las trajera a la próxima misión parroquial. El Evangelio y la primera lectura de esta semana de Pascua nos presenta a personas que dedican tiempo a orar por la misión de la Iglesia. Jesús comienza esta cadena de oración en el aposento alto orando para que sus discípulos puedan cumplir su misión en la tierra. Después de la ascensión de Jesús al cielo Lucas presenta a los discípulos reunidos de nuevo para orar. Antes de ir a cumplir su misión necesitan sabiduría, fortaleza, conocimiento y todos los muchos otros dones del Espíritu Santo. Es a través de la oración que ellos recibirán esos dones. Y una vez que han comenzado su misión nuestra segunda lectura nos recuerda que ellos sufrirán, dudarán y serán perseguidos. Una vez más la oración será necesaria a fin de poder perseverar para la gloria de Dios.
