1 M ark's story of the Baptism of Jesus is different, in that there is no "exchange" between Jesus and John. In a couple of Gospels, John doesn't want to do the baptism, saying "YOU should be baptizing ME!" But, not here. Rather, we learn that John was baptizing people to wash away their sins, and that Jesus went to him for that baptism. I wonder, "What sin did Jesus believe He had? Or, was this simply a premonition that His life would be bound up in healing a sinful condition? In that latter sense, Was His baptism His inauguration on His Mission of human salvation? The Book of Acts (the second reading) seems to think that latter, and connects Jesus' baptism with his Mission of goodness in the Galilee. Whatever our answers, the Gospel tells us that at His Baptism, Jesus saw the dove (Holy Spirit) and heard the "Voice" (of the Father) the Voice that had spoken at Creation: Let there be Light!, and the Voice that Moses and Israel had heard at Sinai, and the Voice that Elijah had discerned in the silence of his caveand the Voice told Him, "You are my beloved Son." I think that's the Baptismal Voice, don't you? It's then that we first "hear" the Voice that tells who we arean identity we learn little by little as life happens to us! Por ejemplo, en otros Evangelios escuchamos a Juan diciéndole a Jesús, TÚ me debería de bautizar a MÍ! Pero no aquí. En vez, aprendemos que Juan estaba bautizando a la gente para purificarlos del pecado, y que Jesús fue con él para su bautismo. Me pregunto, Qué pecados tenía Jesús? Acaso era una señal de que él ahora es humano y sufre como humano? Será que su bautismo significa un inicio de su Misión de la Salvación de la humanidad? En los Hechos, vemos que dice que sí, que era un bautismo para su envío a la Misión de hacer el bien. Sea cual sea nuestra respuesta, el Evangelio nos dice que Jesús vio una paloma (el Espíritu Santo) y escuchó la Voz (del Padre), la Voz que también escuchó Moisés e Israel en el Sinaí, y la Voz que Elías descubrió en su silencio en la cueva y la Voz le dijo, Tú eres mi Hijo amado. Creo que esa es la Voz del Bautismo, no lo creen? Primero escuchamos la Voz que nos dice quiénes somos una identidad que descubrimos poco a poco en la vida! Much of our culture today and conservative Christian ity in particular, struggles with this, protesting that this is really a question of politics and not something that lies at the very heart of religion itself. But, as Jesus himself makes clear, there can be no real relationship with him when the poor are neglected and injustice abounds. When we make spirituality essentially a privatized thing, cut off from the poor and the demands for justice that are found there, it soon degenerates into mere private therapy, an art form or, worse still, an unhealthy clique. W e celebrate the Baptism of the Lord today, which makes us look back at our own baptism and wonder how it has marked our lives. Like Jesus, when we were baptized we were anointed with God's Spirit and declared to be God's beloved sons and daughters. We too conquered the world through faith. We were commissioned to be priest, prophets and kings; in these roles we are called to lives of prayer, proclamation, and service. This may seem daunting but we must remember that, like Jesus, the Spirit came upon us. We can do nothing on our own. We do all through God's Spirit. We had a wonderful celebration on Sat, a thank you to all ministers and their families. I would like to thank you all again for all you do to make St. Agatha's the parish it is. It is your faith that people see and feel. I am blessed to be the one who gets to join you in your walk of faith. 5 Shopping mall safety tips It s easy for kids to get sidetracked with all the sights, sounds, and smells surrounding us at holiday time. It is especially important to monitor your children when taking them through the mall during the Christmas season. If children become separated from you, teach them to look for a safe stranger who can help them. For example, a mom with kids or the cash register person can help a child who is lost. Avoid telling children to go to the manager. Any adult in a suit, who looks important, can look like the manager to a child. Children must be told never to leave the mall or store to go looking for you in the parking lot. Let them know that you would never go outside or leave until you are reunited no matter what anyone else tells them. Prevención del Suicidio Do Sermons Make Sense? A Church goer wrote a letter to the editor of a newspaper and complained that it made no sense to go to church every Sunday. "I've gone for 30 years now," he wrote, "and in that time I have heard something like 3,000 sermons. But for the life of me, I can't remember a single one of them. So, I think I'm wasting my time and the pastors are wasting theirs by giving sermons at all." This started a real controversy in the "Letters to the Editor" column, much to the delight of the editor. It went on for weeks until someone wrote this clincher: "I've been married for 30 years now. In that time my wife has cooked some 32,000 meals. But, for the life of me, I cannot recall the entire menu for a single one of those meals. But I do know this. They all nourished me and gave me the strength I needed to do my work. If my wife had not given me these meals, I would be physically dead today. Likewise, if I had not gone to church for nourishment, I would be spiritually dead today!" When you are DOWN to nothing...
