After eight years serving elsewhere in the diocese, the Lord has brought me full circle back to my beginnings as a priest. I am excited to take on this assignment and with your help continue to build up the Kingdom of God here at Saint Rose of Lima. Mind you, I am also sad to leave Saint Pius X which was my home for six years; however, with God s grace and your help, Saint Rose of Lima is becoming my new home. The Challenge faced is whether I can step up to the standards which Father John Dolan set, and the many good Pastors who have served here. Those are big shoes, which I am tasked to fill. Thank God I am a good eater and have fat feet. All joking aside, I know that God will be with me as your Pastor, and as one community, we will do what is needed for this parish, at this time in order to fulfill God s divine plan. Después de servir en otras partes de la Diócesis, el Señor me ha traído de regreso a donde comencé como sacerdote. Estoy emocionado de tomar esta asignatura y con su ayuda continuar construyendo el Reino de Dios aquí en Santa Rosa de Lima. Quiero aclarar que también estoy triste por dejar la parroquia de San Pio X la cual fue mi casa por seis año; sin embargo, con la gracia de Dios y la ayuda de ustedes, Santa Rosa de Lima será mi nuevo hogar. El reto a seguir es si puedo seguir y alcanzar los estándares tan altos que ha dejado el Padre John Dolan y los múltiples buenos Párrocos que han servido aquí. Esos son unos zapatos muy grandes a llenar. Gracias a Dios soy bueno para comer y tengo pies anchos. Hablando en serio, se que Dios estará conmigo y me guiará como su Párroco, y como una comunidad haremos lo que se necesita para esta parroquia para cumplir con el plan divino de Dios. Can you pull it close andfeel comfort? You can if it is prayer quilt. Prayers & Squares Quilting Ministry is a ininternational interfaith outreach ministry that combines the gift of prayer with the gift of a hand tied quilt. The purpose of Prayers & Squares is not to just make and distribute quilts, but to promote prayer through the use of quilts. Anyone can request a prayer quilt for another person who is in need of special prayer. As each quilt is made the several layers are held together by cords. These cords are tied in a knot and a special prayer is said for the individual who will receive the finished quilt. Each quilt is a gift of love and prayer. It is an affirmation of our faith in God and in our belief in God s power to comfort, strengthen and heal. The quilt makers of St. Rose of Lima meet in the old rectory on the first and third Mondays of each month. 3 seniors for the fun of it a grand success 15th Sunday of Ordinary Time July 13th, 2014 MESSAGES FROM FATHER L:UKE Seniors For The Fun of It. Wed. July 16th 2004 Success!!!!! Seniors for the fun of it had our first meeting in the Parish Hall, and a good time was had by all the attendees. Folks met new friends or saw old friends, and had no problem starting a game of cards, yahtzee etc. We did have a problem with one game! We need more men for spin the bottle. The two we had got a little worn out. Also of course we missed YOU. So we hope we see you next time. The next Seniors For The Fun of It will be on July 16 in the Parish Hall 1 to 3pm. Plan to be there, remember cancel that Doctor s appointment, just invite the Doc down to play your favorite game. Games are available there or bring your own favorite to share. Christmas In July Christmas Ornament count down to our 100th anniversary has arrived. For those collecting the whole Nativity Set this one is the 1st of the Three Kings. These will be on sale for the same $10.00 each price as in the past (stands $5.00 each) after as many Masses as possible during the month of July. As in the past there are only 200 of these limited edition ornaments available and when sold out no more will be available. This Knights of Columbus fund raiser is for the benefit of all St Rose parishioners and it was developed by Father John. For those in our parish that have students graduating from St Rose (or from any school) this coming school year these beautiful ornaments can be a fantastic tangible and sentimental memory of that very special milestone. For all others this year s ornament holds a special meaning as it marks the last year that our beloved are treasured Father John was a part of our parish. SEMI-RETIRED or RETIRED? EAGER TO GIVE SOMETHING BACK? The Ignatian Volunteer Corps is currently accepting applications for women and men age 50 and over. Volunteers for the Jesuit-sponsored program have the opportunity to serve the needs of people who are poor, to work for a more just society, and to grow deeper in Christian faith by reflecting and praying in the Ignatian tradition. Volunteers serve eight or 16 hours a week, and meet monthly with a Spiritual Reflector and other IVC members. We especially have a need for people on Sundays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Ministers must complete a comprehensive health screening by Scripps Mercy and participate in a hospital orientation program which addresses safety and security issues. This process takes about thirty days to complete. If you are interested, please contact Deacon Greg at the Parish Office (Ext 110) for more information. This Sunday we hear the parable of the sower, which seems to be obscured from obvious inspection. Even the apostles questioned Jesus on why he does not explain the parable more plainly. The core issue is about one of freedom. If Jesus was to explain every thing overtly, we would be overwhelmed by the divine truth of God and have no choice but be consumed by God s reality reducing us to machines of function rather than people of love. This is the core of many Eastern religious philosophies. The perspective is that the state of fulfillment is unity and dispersion within the universe. Such unity, where we are dispersed, or when our identity is absorbed into the larger reality destroys our minor reality. If we are absorbed into God without maintaining personality and freedom, then our existence is lost in the divine reality of God. Fundamentally, love in God is a reality of freedom, forcing love destroys love. As a result, Jesus speaks in parables so that those who want to hear the truth, those who want to accept the faith, and those who want to give over their lives to God would hear and believe allowing the divine life of Christ to take root into their soul. It is our choice to be united with God in this love which maintains our personality and identity in the divine reality of God. The many are made one in the body of Christ through the reception of the Eucharist. It is through the Eucharist that the Holy intimate exchange of Love occurs between Christ and His bride, the Church. Those who do not want to bend themselves and be united to God s will, then would not hear and not be forced to convert. They reject the regular reception of reconciliation and communion. Love can only be offered and accepted; never coerced and demanded. The question to ask one s self is this, what sort of soil do we choose for our souls? 15 Domingo de Tiempo Ordinario Ciclo A 13 de Julio del 2014 En este Domingo escuchamos la parábola del sembrador la cual resulta ser no tan clara. Incluso los apóstoles le preguntaron a Jesús que porque no les explicaba la parábola con mas detalles. El punto clave aquí es la libertad que Jesús nos da. Si Jesús no explicara cada cosa con detalle nos llenaríamos de la Verdad Divina de Dios y no tendríamos otra opción que ser maquinas que sólo funcionan en vez de ser personas que aman. Ésta es la base de muchas religiones del Este. Éstas creen que nuestro objetivo es estar unido y dispersos en el universo. Esta unidad es donde estamos dispersos; donde nuestra identidad se absorbe en una realidad mas grande que a la vez destruye nuestra minoría. Si nos dejamos absorber por Dios sin mantener nuestra personalidad y nuestra libertad, entonces nuestra existencia se pierde en la realidad Divina de Dios. Finalmente, el amor de Dios incluye libertad; de otro modo un amor forzado destruye al amor. Por esto, Jesús nos habla en parábolas para que quienes aceptan la fe, y aquellos que dan sus vidas a Dios, escuchen y crean mientras permiten a la Divina Vida de Cristo tomar la raíz de sus almas. Nosotros decidimos si queremos estar unidos con Dios en este amor que nos permite mantener nuestra personalidad y nuestra identidad. Todos estamos unidos en el cuerpo de Cristo a través de la Eucaristía. Es atreves de la Eucaristia que el intercambio sagrado e intimo de amor ocurre entre Cristo y sus Esposa la Iglesia. Aquellos que no quieren postrarse y estar unidos a la voluntad de Dios, no escucharan y no serán forzados a convertirse. Ellos han rechazado la opción de reconciliarse y estar en comunión. El amor puede ser solamente ofrecido y aceptado pero nunca forzado. La pregunta para hacernos es esta, Qué tipo de sembradío escogemos para nuestras almas? Escogemos ser un suelo escuchamos la verdad de Cristo, toma rápidamente raíz, pero tan pronto nos ridiculizan nos apartamos. Nuestras verdad crece también lo hacen los deseos mundanos, los cuales se esparcen rápido y ahogan la fe. Esperemos que nuestras almas estén ricamente enfocadas en los bienes espirituales de Jesús para que reconozcamos sus bendiciones y cultivarlas en nuestras vidas para cosechar la vendimia bendita. 4 Sister Dolores Social Outreach Program Wins $12K Grant I am very pleased to announce that the Sister Dolores Social Outreach Program won a $12K grant from The Chula Vista Charitable Foundation. This organization is the local arm of The San Diego Foundation. The check was awarded to us last week at Petco Park during a Pre-game ceremony! Rosy Vasquez, Director of Marketing and Development accepted the check on our behalf. We are truly grateful for the hard work and expertise that she lent to the grant writing process. We won the grant based on a concept that we submitted called Fresh to Families. While the Sister Dolores food pantry distributes several tons of shelf stable food annually, we have not had the capacity to offer fresh fruits and vegetables to our low-income clients. The goal of our Fresh to families program is to glean and grow produce in our neighborhood for these families. This type of program is used throughout the country but has never been implemented locally. Our city officials along with local farmers market vendors and growers have expressed enthusiastic support for the program and have pledged their support of partnership. We will be counting on them for their leadership. The principle goal of the program is to help educate our clients about the direct correlation that nutrition has on health outcomes. We will be working with local medical and nutrition experts to provide healthy living workshops at the parish. Healthy families mean better communities and we are very excited to take our food program to the next level. There will be several opportunities for our parishioners to be a part of the Fresh to Families program.
