2 SECOND SUNDAY OF LENT Dear Parishioners and Friends, As we enter the second week of Lent there is a prayer form that comes from the writings of St. Ignatius of Loyola. This is called the Examination of Consciousness (not conscience). The Examination of Conscience has its place in helping a person prepare for Confession. The Examination of Consciousness gives us guidelines for noticing how God is present in my life each day. If we never ask ourselves, How is God present to me in my daily life? we will not notice his presence. It will just slip by us unnoticed. Jesus told us that he will be with us until the end of time. Therefore, this is a simple prayer that we can use every day and not just during Advent or Lent. At St. Francis Xavier Elementary School, the children are led through this prayer form every day during Lent. It is adapted to their age level and they really get the spirit of the prayer! Five points: presence, gratitude, review, sorrow and grace. Presence: remember that you are in God s presence in a special way when you pray. You can make that time holy by saying at the beginning of your prayer: Lord, I want this time to be for you. Gratitude: Recall two or three things that have happened today for which you are grateful. Savor them. Thank God for these gifts. Review: Review your day from start to finish, noticing where you experienced God s presence. Notice big things and little things a gentle word of encouragement or understanding; a smile; a gesture of kindness. When did you reach out in love? When did you experience love coming back to you? Sorrow: As you review your day, you may be well aware of how you acted out of character today. Often times the sin pops up like a red flag; you sense you were out of character. Express your sorrow to God and ask for forgiveness. If something really serious occurs, then you may need to consider the Sacrament of Confession and/or making some form of restitution. Jesus does not shame us. He wants us to admit our humanness and get back on track with his grace. Grace: Now go back to a meaningful part of your prayer and speak to God as you would to a trusted friend. God already knows your heart but you giving it expression makes it more real to you. You are not talking to yourself. You are talking with God. God is not hidden. We just have to practice noticing his presence. The peace of Christ be with you. Fr. Padre, Dan Sullivan, S.J.
