1 July 2014 Newsletter The Mission of The Pinnacle Charter School is: To educate students to attain superior levels of academic performance by: Creating a safe, supportive school community Fostering a structured environment to prepare students for college and career Using data and state standards to support learning Striving for excellence in everything we do. Dear Pinnacle Parents: Where has the summer gone? It s hard to believe that in a few short weeks, The Pinnacle will begin its 17 th year and the graduating Class of 2027 will start their educational journey as kindergartners. The new school year will feature the beginning of the implementation of our program to put ipads in the hands of all of our students. Students in Grades K-5, beginning with Grade 5, will receive their individually assigned ipads following a parent orientation/training program and signing an agreement to assure that the ipad comes to school charged each day and is properly taken care of. Middle and High School students will be able to use ipads in school this year. Their individual ipad deployment will happen in the school year. The use of ipads as instructional tools will change how teachers teach and enable students to use 21 st Century technology to learn and prepare them for current and future challenges and careers. I applaud the investment our Board of Directors is making with the ipad program to upgrade the quality of education for our students. We continue to look at options for bringing our K-12 program under one roof. The preliminary results of focus groups and market surveys which were completed in June seem to show that present and potential Pinnacle parents are in favor a K-12 school in one facility and providing a curriculum that has an Arts and Science/Math/Technology focus along with opportunities for our high school students to concurrently enroll for college credit. I ll be keeping up to date with our progress in future editions of this newsletter. Please take a careful look at this edition of the Newsletter. It contains much useful information to get the school off to a great start. Let me also call your attention to The Pinnacle s first summer musical, Mirror Image, which will premier later this week. It should be a great show for the whole family. I ll close this letter with a welcome back to the new school year and a special thanks to returning and new parents for trusting us to provide your students with their education. Please know that we will do everything we can to maintain this trust and make you proud that you chose The Pinnacle. We (all of us working together) are Pinnacle! Doc William K. Wiener, Ph.D. Executive Director

3 The Pinnacle Elementary Charter School Happenings! Summer 2014 From the desk of Rebecca Sieve, Elementary Principal The summer program has been going well for Elementary students and staff. Teacher recommended students are receiving additional support in reading and math skills to provide that extra boost in academic achievement levels. Summer classes will end on Thursday, July 17. During the interval before the start of the new school year in August, parents and families are encouraged to motivate children to continue their studies by reading to or with them daily and by providing access to skills based educational computer programs. Some of the educational websites used at school are starfall.com, brainpop.com, and scholastic.com. The summer activities book, Summer Bridge Activities, is also a teacher recommended resource. You can view their online companion website at summerlearningactivities.com/sba. In addition, it is always an enjoyable activity to visit the local library where children can choose their favorite books and participate in special summer events. Planning a trip to a Denver museum or nature preserve is also an enrichment opportunity for students and their families. We look forward to the coming school year and hope to see you at the Kindergarten Open House on August 12, and the Grades 1-5 Open House on August 13. Kindergarten students return on August 14, and students in grades 1-5 return on August 18. Enjoy the remaining summer weeks, and have fun with summer learning activities! Volunteer/Fundraising Opportunities Anyone who wishes to volunteer at The Pinnacle must complete a Volunteer Agreement and have a background check done through the school prior to volunteering. Volunteer Agreements are available at the front office of the K-8 building. A new background check is required every two years. Safety is one of our top priorities at The Pinnacle. We want to make sure our students, staff and community are safe. Please contact our Volunteer Coordinator, Eddee Chavez, at ext with questions or for more information. We look forward to working with you this school year. **Please do not forget to clip and save Box Tops and Campbell s soup labels and drop them off at the Front Office. The box tops and labels provide money and equipment for our school. ** **We are always accepting donations of gently used uniforms. The Woodsman jumps at the chance to rescue them, but the stepsisters have no intention of returning to the fantasy realm. After all, in the real world, mean girls are popular! The Woodsman finds himself in over his head and recruits the help of Danica, a hard-core realist who never believed in fairy tales. She s running for class president, but her speeches are filled with gloom and doom. Meanwhile, the sky is falling in the fantasy world! Without the Woodsman, Little Red is attacked by the wolf and Sleeping Beauty keeps pricking her finger on the ax while chopping her own firewood! As reality seeps into the fairy tales, the characters start to break free of their patterns and the classic princesses cross the portal and discover they can be their own heroes! We understand that many of you have jobs that may not provide you the weekly opportunities to help in the classrooms or various departments of the school, but anytime you are able to volunteer at special events or field trips would be great. Each parent will need to fill out a Volunteer Packet and turn it in to the Front Office. Please ask your student s teacher to provide a time and day that works best for volunteering. Parents are the number one reason for the success of their student(s) at school. If you are not able to volunteer at the school, it is very important to work with your student at home with homework and reading.

8 Uniform Policy The responsibility to make academics the primary focus obligates the Pinnacle to prevent anything, which may distract from the education of students. An environment in which students, staff, parents, and community members feel safe is of the utmost importance. Towards this end, a uniform policy has been adopted and will be enforced. Registering your child at the Pinnacle indicates your acceptance of this policy. Students not in uniform will be required to get a proper change of clothing or be sent home and further disciplinary action may be taken. Repeat offenders will be considered habitually disruptive.
