Brownsville Healthy Communities of Brownsville relied on assistance from integral partners to include: City of Brownsville Public Health Department and the Department of State Health Services - Office of Border Health in planning the activities hosted during Binational Health Week. Healthy Communities of Brownsville adopted the objective of Childhood Obesity and showcased this issue at the Healthy Eating Symposium held on October 6, 2009 entitled "Preventing Obesity with Healthy Eating Habits". Several local restaurants were present and offered their healthy entrees and other menu items for the health conscious segment of the Symposium. Partners City of Brownsville, Department of State Health Services-DSHS-OBH, Brownsville Independent School District, Farmers Market, Valley Baptist Medical Center, Infant and Nutrition Family Agency, Gold s Gym. Activities and events Healthy Food Choices and Cooking Segment Lecture by guest speaker on Cooking Healthy Mexican Meals, and culturally relevant food demonstrations. Created for children and parents to encourage healthy snacks and meals, it was sponsored by Healthy Community of Brownville, UTH- SPH Brownsville Regional Campus and took place at the Brownsville Farmer s Market on October 3 rd. 3

4 The Symposium on Preventing Obesity with Healthy Eating Habits Health took place on October 6 at the Brownsville Event Center, and included a fair and taste test demonstration offering samples of healthy entrees and menu items available at local restaurants. The City of Brownsville Health Dept., Healthy Communities of Brownsville, and the Brownsville ISD CATCH program, sponsored this event. Approximately 90 participants. Health Education Literacy Symposium on Healthy Eating Habits Scoop the Poop Campaign, focusing on physical activities for people and their pets. Dog trainers offered pet owners tips on maintaining obedient pets. This segment allowed the public to visit and promote exercise with your pet by showcasing the City of Brownsville s Catherine B. Stillman Dog Park. People and Pet Healthy Lifestyle: Exercise with your Pet Outdoor activities featuring go play outside and eat right, eat healthy promoting the importance of an active healthy lifestyle for all ages. This venue provided demonstrations from local fitness centers and schools that offer dance lessons. Other activities hosted at this event included: soccer, a hula hoop contest, frisbee throwing, and an obstacle course for young children. Active Family Day Event 4

5 The events focused on the BBHW theme of Preventing Obesity and Diabetes were: Health Symposium, Healthy Cooking Choices with featured guest: "Healthy Mexican Cooking" by Velda de la Garza, Health Snack Boxes, Exercise with you Pet and Active Family Day. While this was the first of its kind, Healthy Communities of Brownsville received a City Proclamation for our collaboration with the City of Brownsville Public Health Department and the Department of State Health Services - Office of Border Health. During Border Binational Health Week, Healthy Communities of Brownsville promoted and encouraged the Community to make healthy lifestyle changes by hosting activities and venues that would support positive results. The attendence from the public during Border Binational Health Week indicated that the Community was very supportive of the underlying message prompting the motivation behind the hosting of these events. Healthy Communities of Brownsville received recognition for hosting the various events during Border Binational Health Week and for the creatively promoting a healthy and active lifestyle. 5

Activities and events Border Health Fair Dr. Jose Vasquez, Starr Co./Cd. Miguel Aleman/Camargo BHC Co-President speaking to Rio Grande Junior High School Students at Starr Co. Bi-National Health Fair On Oct 8, at the Rio Grande City ISD Multi-Purpose Center, the Border Health Fair was inaugurated by the Starr Co. Judge, Honorable Eloy Vera; Dr. José Vasquez, SMAC (Starr Co. / Cd. Miguel Aleman / Camargo) Binational Health Council Co- President, and Mr Gene Falcón, Starr Co. Assistant to Judge Vera. Students and faculty were very interested and had plenty of concerns that were addressed by Dr. Vasquez. Several local, state and private organizations were present with information booths. DSHS-Immunizations were present providing seasonal flu shots. Approximately 350 students participated. Honorable Starr County Judge Eloy Vera being administered the seasonal flu shot by DSHS-Region 11 Immunization Department Ms. Nancy Keene 6

7 Rio Grande Junior High Students at the Starr Co. Health Fair Border Health Walk-a-thon The Border Health Walk-athon was held on Oct 6, 2009 at the Roma Middle School, City of Roma with participation of approximately 350 students and school staff. Students asked questions to guest speakers. One of the highlights was showing the student different exercises and playing the Wii Fitness Game, which at the end of the fair was raffled off to a lucky student. Both Walk-a-thon and the Health Fair were focused on providing information regarding Obesity and Diabetes, the BBHW main topic this year. 7

Hidalgo County Partners The Texas Department of State Health Services, Office of Border Health (DSHS-OBH), together with Sanofi Pasteur, a Pharmaceutical Co.; Secretaría de Salud de Tamaulipas; Hidalgo County Insurance Department; Mexican Consulate in McAllen; Dr. Enrique Griego; AgriLife, a non-profit organization; and Texas A & M Hidalgo County Extension Office. Activities and events Border Binational Health Week Conference This Conference took place on October 8 in Weslaco, Texas, with the participation of 115 health professionals. Hidalgo County Employee Health Fair The Health Fair took place on October 19 th in Edinburg, Texas, with the participation of approximately 650 employees. Focus on BBHW theme of Preventing obesity and diabetes Presentations on Diabetes and Child Obesity by Dr. Rolando Hugo Gonzalez; and by Dr. Enrique Griego on Family Nutrition. Highlights Increase awareness of Diabetes prevention and control, good eating habits, and awareness of community health services. 8

Laredo Activities and events Border Binational Health Week Proclamation The 6 th Annual BBHW activities in Laredo, Texas, was inaugurated on October 6, 2010, at the City of Laredo Health Department (CLHD), by Dr. Hector Gonzalez, M.D., CLHD Director; Honorable Raúl Salinas, Mayor, City of Laredo; and Dr. Jaime E. Gutiérrez, Jefe de la Jurisdicción Sanitaria No. 5, Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas. Participated in this opening event numerous staff from the Jurisdicción Sanitaria No. 5; CLHD staff; Homeland Security representatives; Laredo ISD representatives; Wesley Nurses; Mexican Consulate representatives; Ruth B. Cowl Rehabilitation representative; and TAMIU representatives. City of Laredo Mayor Raul Salinas made the formal BBHW Proclamation marking the inauguration of the 6 th annual BBHW activities in Laredo, Texas, on October 6, Mayor Salinas first to the right, Mr. Salinas, Dr. Gregorio Ortegón, Dr. Jaime Gutierrez, Dr. Hector Gonzalez and Mr. Waldo Lopez Dr. Héctor Gonzalez recognized all agency representatives and thanked all those who make the 6 th annual BBHW possible. Both Laredo s are very much concerned about H1N1 situation and are collaborating together as they have always done in the past to protect the citizens on both sides of the border. Dr. Jaime Gutierrez agreed with his counterpart in all the issues mentioned and proceeded to invite all participants to the Los Dos Laredos BHC Conference on Influenza Strategies and Environmental Health, on Thursday October 8 th in Nuevo Laredo. Mayor Salinas read the BBHW Proclamation and presented it to Dr. Gonzalez and Dr. Gutierrez. 9

10 Chief Nurse Gloria Peña, who just retired, was recognized for her many years of hard work on this position. Flu Vaccine On October 7, the Mexican Consulate in Laredo and the City of Laredo Health Department administered H1N1 Flu vaccines free of charge to targeted population (over 60 years old population, pregnant women and people with health issues). A nurse from the Immunization Department from the City of Laredo Health Department administered the vaccines. Torneo de futbol Soccer On Oct 10, La copa de la salud con el Deporte, took place in San Antonio, with 13 year old boys from Brownsville, McAllen, Laredo, San Antonio and Austin, organized by Brownsville, McAllen, Laredo, San Antonio, and Austin Mexican Consulates. Ventanillas de Salud The inauguration ceremony took place on October 14 th at the Mexican Consulate in Laredo, with the participation of Diabetes education and referrals, organized by the Mexican Consulate and the City of Laredo Health Department (CLHD). Mexico Secretariat of Health Dr. José Angel Córdova Villalobos participated, as well as other dignitaries. BBHW Closing Ceremony On Friday October 9 th the Closing event took place at La Posada Hotel, downtown Laredo. Attended the ceremony Hon. Clemente Villalpando, BHC-Mexico Section; Dr. Antonio Falcón, USMBHC Texas U.S.-Section Member; Dr. R.J. Dutton, Texas Office of Border Health Director, Dr. Laura Magaña Valladares, Academic Secretariat Director, Mexican National Institute of Public Health. The ceremony concluded with the dedication of the Laredo Ventanilla de Salud by Dr. José Angel Córdova Villalobos. 10

12 SEMANA TRINACIONAL DE SALUD FRONTERIZA 2009 PIEDRAS NEGRAS-EAGLE PASS-TRIBU KICKAPOO INAUGURACIÓN El día 5 de Octubre, autoridades de ambos lados de la frontera presidieron el evento inaugural de la Semana Trinacional de Salud Dr. Arturo Botello Jefe de la Jurisdicción Sanitaria, Sr. Chad Foster Mayor de la ciudad de Eagle Pass; Lic. Ricardo Santana Velázquez Cónsul de México en Eagle Pass; Dr. Armando Rodríguez en representación del Presidente Municipal de Piedras Negras, Sra. Erhard Presidenta del DIF Municipal; Coahuila, entre otros. 12

13 SEMANA TRINACIONAL DE SALUD FRONTERIZA 2009 PIEDRAS NEGRAS-EAGLE PASS-TRIBU KICKAPOO CAMINATA PREVENCIÓN DE OBESIDAD Y DIABETES El día 6 de octubre del 2009 se realizó la caminata de prevención de diabetes y obesidad en la Macroplaza de la ciudad de Piedras Negras, en donde participaron Autoridades del Sector Salud y del DIF los diferentes grupos de ayuda mutua de los centros de salud y asistentes de la comunidad. Sra. Catalina Vela de Erhard Presidenta del DIF Municipal, Sra. Ernestina Campos Gómez representante de adultos mayores, Sra. Laura Bustamante Coordinadora de los Grupos de autoayuda del DIF, Dr. Arturo Botello Méndez Jefe de la Jurisdicción Sanitaria marcaron el inicio de la caminata. 13

14 SEMANA TRINACIONAL DE SALUD FRONTERIZA 2009 PIEDRAS NEGRAS-EAGLE PASS-TRIBU KICKAPOO FORO-TALLER PREVENCIÓN DEL SUICIDIO El miércoles 7 de octubre el Consulado de México a través de la Ventanilla de Salud y con la colaboración de la Agencia Camino Real, en el marco de la STS organizó el Foro Taller de Prevención del Suicidio. Con mucho interés y con una gran asistencia fueron analizadas las estadísticas de suicidios en los EUA y se brindó la información de servicios de atención en casos de crisis con que se cuenta en la comunidad. 14

15 SEMANA TRINACIONAL DE SALUD FRONTERIZA 2009 PIEDRAS NEGRAS-EAGLE PASS-TRIBU KICKAPOO FORO-TALLER ADICCIONES El día 7 de octubre se realizó el Foro de Adicciones, en el Casino Médico de Piedras Negras en donde se abordaron temas muy importantes como el Panorama epidemiológico de las Adicciones a nivel nacional, estatal y local, el origen del problema, así como la manera de abordar a un paciente adicto, a donde canalizarlo para apoyo médico y psicológico, y el último tema fue Síndrome de hijos de pacientes alcohólicos. Dr. Arturo Botello Méndez, Coordinador de la Comisión de Salud Fronteriza en Piedras Negras, durante el mensaje de Inauguración del Foro Taller de Adicciones Dr. Humberto Márquez Farias, Coordinador del Prog. Adicciones, impartió el tema del Panorama Epidemiológico de las Adicciones, y la Psicóloga Asai Valdez Saldaña, impartió como abordar al paciente adicto y dónde canalizarlo. Se realizó un taller al finalizar el Foro, el cual estuvo a cargo del Psicólogo Javier Vázquez con el tema de Síndrome de hijos de Padres alcohólicos 15

16 SEMANA TRINACIONAL DE SALUD FRONTERIZA 2009 PIEDRAS NEGRAS-EAGLE PASS-TRIBU KICKAPOO SEMINARIO INFLUENZA El Jueves, 8 de octubre, fue organizado el Seminario de Influenza mismo que fue dirigido a especialistas de la Salud de ambos lados de la Frontera que con atención escucharon a los ponentes y participaron activamente con preguntas muy interesantes respecto al tema. 16

18 SEMANA TRINACIONAL DE SALUD FRONTERIZA 2009 FERIA DE SALUD, LAGUITO DEL CONDADO DE MAVERICK El sábado 10 de octubre, diversas agencias dieron atención gratuita a los asistentes a la Feria de Salud tanto con materiales informativos como con análisis de glucosa, glaucoma, VIH entre otros. Fue lanzada la campaña Viviendo Verde los niños asistentes participaron activamente. Limpiaron y recolectaron grandes cantidades de plásticos, latas y pilas 18

19 SEMANA TRINACIONAL DE SALUD FRONTERIZA 2009 PIEDRAS NEGRAS-EAGLE PASS-TRIBU KICKAPOO CLAUSURA El Mayor de la ciudad de Eagle Pass, Sr. Chad Foster y el Juez del Condado de Maverick, Sr. José Aranda dieron lectura y entregaron a las autoridades de Salud las Proclamas de la Semana Trinacional de Salud 2009 Gale Morrow, Directora Regional del Departamento de Servicios de Salud del Estado de Texas, agradece las Proclamas e invita a los presentes a seguir impulsando estas Semanas de fomento a la salud para la comunidad. El Ballet Folklórico del Colegio SWTJC presentaron bailables de los Estados de Veracruz, Colima, Tamaulipas y Nuevo León. 19

20 SEMANA TRINACIONAL DE SALUD FRONTERIZA 2009 PIEDRAS NEGRAS-EAGLE PASS-TRIBU KICKAPOO WHITE CANE WALK El Mayor de la Ciudad de Eagle Pass, Sr. Chad Foster presidió la Caminata del Bastón Blanco. Celebrado el día 15 de Octubre, bajo el patrocinio de South West Texas Optical y el Departamento de Asistencia y Rehabilitación de Texas Voluntarios que asistieron al evento decidieron tomar el reto de caminar por las calles con el bastón con el fin de sensibilizarse. 20

COBINAS AMISTAD Partners AMISTAD Binational Health Committee (COBINAS AMISTAD) organized several activities in partnership with the Mexican Consulate at Del Río, DSHS Office of Border Health, Secretaría de Salud de Cd. Acuña, Baptist Church Family Services, Quad Counties, Val Verde Regional Hospital, 911 Emergency Department, and the Methodist Health Care Ministry. Activities and events Wellness Expo Health Fair On October 9, at the Plaza del Sol Mall in Del Rio, Texas the Department of State Health Services and other participating agencies provided health information and free, blood pressure, diabetes exams, and screening for other diseases. Seasonal Flu vaccine was also administered to adults and youngsters. More than 500 people got their vaccines Ventanilla de Salud Inauguration A new Ventanilla de Salud was inaugurated at the Mexican Consulate in Del Rio. PAHO Diabetes Forum Took place at the Mall de las Aguilas in Del Rio, Texas. Representantes de diferentes agencias y programas locales asistieron a la conferencia. 21

22 7. COBINAS Presidio Ojinaga Partners Jurisdicción Sanitaria en Ojinaga, Chihuahua; Mexican Consulate in Presidio, Texas; Texas Office of Border Health. Activities and events The following activities were organized and developed by Binational Health Council Presidio-Ojinaga, US-Mexico Border Health Commission, Texas Office of Border Health, and the Mexican Consulate in Presidio: Opening Binational Health Parade Took place in Presidio on Oct 2 nd with participation of the community. Health Fair Open to the whole community, took place in Presidio on Oct 3 rd. Local inauguration with a health fair Took place in Ojinaga on Oct 5 th and included presentations on health topics and distribution of health information flyers. River Adventure - Interactive children play Activity with children, took place in Presidio on Oct. 5 th. World Hug Walkathon Senior Citizens and their families Walk-a-thon, took place in Presidio and Ojinaga on Oct. 4 th with a total participation of 1500 people. Diabetes Conference by Dr. Parsons Open to everyone in the community, took place in Presidio on Oct. 7 th. Nutrition Conference Offered by Nutritionist Hilda Valles, took place in Presidio on October 6 th. Migrant Forum Took place in Ojinaga on Oct 5 th. Breast Cancer Conference Took place in Ojinaga on Oct 6 th, with participation of 106 women. Teen s Health Fair Took place in Ojinaga on Oct 7 th, with participation of 650 youth. 22

23 Mammography Exams Screening took place in Ojinaga on Oct 8 th. H1N1 Conference Open to the community, took place in Ojinaga on Oct 8 th. Addiction, Drug Use and Drug Traffic Conference Took place in Presidio, on Oct 8 th, open to the whole community. Living Green Conference at the Presidio High School Took place in Presidio on Oct 5 th, open to the community. STDs Conference Organized by the COBINAS Presidio, the Mexican Consulate, and the Office of Border Health, the STD Conference took place on October 8 th. 23

24 8. COBINAS El Paso / Cd. Juárez / Las Cruces The events were coordinated by the El Paso/Ciudad Juárez/Las Cruces Binational Health Council (COBINAS). Partners Jurisdicción Sanitaria II, Cd. Juárez, Chihuahua; Department of State Health Services Texas Office of Border Health; New Mexico Office of Border Health. Activities and events Red de Promotoras Forum (288 participants); and Red Ribbon Rally in El Paso (2,500); Addiction s Forum for health professionals in Sunland Park (100); and Lauching of diabetes Movie in Las Cruces, New Mexico (100); Walkathon Move for your health (700); Local inauguration with a Meeting Conference; Health Fair; Forum: Tu salud es tu meta (50); and Closing event: Youth Health Forum in Cd. Juarez, Chihuahua. A total of at least 3,700 people participated in the events. 24

25 Conclusion This year the focus of the Border Binational Health Week was on Preventing Obesity and Diabetes. By number of participants, the most popular activities were: Exercise with your pet (2722) in Brownsville; Border Health Walk-a-thon and Border Fair (350 8 th grade students) in Roma and Rio Grande Middle Schools; Hidalgo County Employee Health Fair (650) in Edinburg; Health Fair (537) in Eagle Pass; Kickapoo Bike-a-thon and Health Fair (175); Senior s Walk-a-thon in Presidio and Ojinaga (1500); Teen s Health Fair in Ojinaga (650); Red Ribbon Rally (2500) in El Paso; Walk-a-thon More for your health (700) in Cd. Juarez; Red de Promotoras Forum (288) in El Paso. Approximately a total of 11,100 people participated in different activities during the 2009 BBHW along the U.S.-Mexico border. An activity that promises to be duplicated in the future in other areas along the border for its popularity and great reception was the Torneo de futbol Soccer La copa de la salud con el Deporte, held in San Antonio with the participation of 13 year old boys from Brownsville, McAllen, Laredo, San Antonio and Austin. In smaller areas such as Eagle Pass and Kickapoo Tribe, the limited scope of events - its concentration on obesity/diabetes prevention - made it difficult to get folks to participate.
