These two Masters met the standards in testing for Microsoft Word, Word Expert, Excel, Excel Expert, Publisher, and Access. Over the past two school years, these students prepared themselves with approximately 230 hours of instruction. Congratulations! MOS 2010 continues the legacy of the Microsoft Office Specialist certification programs, the premier credential chosen by individuals seeking to validate their skills and advance their careers. The credential enables individuals to tap the full features and functionality of the Microsoft Office 2010 system, resulting in increased academic and job performance, individual differentiation and personal confidence. 2 2 Okanogan Wildlife League Visits 3rd Graders La Liga de Okanogan de Vida Silvestre Visita T he third grade students have been learning about owls and dissected owl pellets as a part of their last science unit. Lisa Lindsay and her birds from the Okanogan County Wildlife League visited the third grade classrooms. The Okanogan County Wildlife League strives to assist orphaned, sick, and injured wildlife in returning to the wild; and also use non-releasable animals for educational purposes to promote awareness of preserving and understanding our local wildlife and their ecosystems. Lisa gave her presentation with her five raptors that live at the rehabilitation center. She brought three different kinds of owls, a hawk, and a falcon with her to teach the students about the different kinds of raptors and what she does to help them. os estudiantes de tercer grado han estado aprendiendo sobre búhos y egagrópilas disecados como parte de su última unidad de ciencia. 3 Parent/Community Engagement Coordinator Update Informes por parte de la Coordinadora de enlace de Padres/Comunidad Towards the end of school year , the Brewster Middle School designed a plan to help students make an honest reflection on their part for their true participation in completing assignments and doing their best in obtaining acceptable grades. A form called Responsibility Plan was designed for the student with grades F, D+, D-. It was designed for the student to make a serious effort to be his/her own advocate in understanding their own part for their academic success. We cannot allow the student to be satisfied with a D or a D+ when their potential could be A s or B s. A letter was sent to all the parents whose child was found, for the first time only, with a low grade (D+ and below). The form was to be completed by the student, where he/she would set a goal in reaching a higher grade or percentage on each failing class, on a weekly basis. After that the student would take the form(s) to parents who after discussing the student goal and/or strategy in reaching a higher grade, would sign it and return it to school. By doing this not only the student was to be aware of his/her low grades but the parent would also be aware and act upon it to do something. In four week into the program, we saw a big difference in effort and attitude from a lot of students towards their classes. We were able to see a constant increase in their grades on a weekly basis. We were also able to involved parents in their student s academic progress. Like they say It Takes a Village to Raise a Child. Among parents, teachers, and other staff our students are reaching higher grounds. De esta manera no sólo el estudiante estará consciente de sus bajas calificaciones sino que también sus padres estarán conscientes y podrán hacer algo para mejorar. En cuatro semanas del programa, hemos visto una gran diferencia en el esfuerzo y la actitud de muchos de los estudiantes hacia sus clases. Pudimos ver un aumento constante en sus calificaciones cada semana. También hemos sido capaces de involucrar a los padres en el progreso académico de sus estudiantes. 4 4 Third Graders Take a Trip T Estudiantes de Tercer Grado Salen de Viaje he third graders celebrated a year of hard work and great success by going on a field trip to Winthrop. While in Winthrop, they visited the fish hatchery and learned about salmon along with having biologists teach them about the Beaver Conservation Program. They explored pioneer buildings at the Okanogan County Historical Museum, watched a glass blowing demonstration at Glassworks of Winthrop and enjoyed yummy homemade ice cream at Sherri s Sweet Shop. It was a wonderful day with wonderful Brewster Bear kids! L os estudiantes de tercer grado celebraron un año de trabajo duro y un gran éxito yéndose de viaje de campo a Winthrop. Fue un día maravilloso con maravillosos niños/as de los Osos de Brewster! DARE O n Friday, May 8, fifth grade students at Brewster Elementary School graduated from the DARE program. DARE stands for Drug Abuse Resistance Education. It is a ten week program taught by Brewster Police Officer Nattalie Cariker. The DARE program teaches students good decision-making skills to help them lead safe and responsible lives. Our thanks go to Officer Nattalie and the District for making this program happen! 5 Brewster Preschool Receives Grant Preescolar de Brewster Recibió una Beca T he Brewster Preschool received a grant from the Brewster Teacher s Association to purchase tablets for students within the program that need additional support in the area of language/communication. The preschool program was able to purchase 4 kid Fire tablets. There was also money for purchasing communication apps so that students could use the tablets to aid in their speaking. The tablets will be used within the Preschool and can be checked out for the summer by the families to use with their child. In the fall the students will take their tablets to kindergarten with them. The purchase of the tablets has made a huge impact in the lives of our students giving them a way to communicate with peers and staff. In addition, learning apps have been added to help students maintain their learning over the summer. The Preschool wishes to thank the Brewster Teacher s Association for this fantastic opportunity to purchase materials for individual students!!! En el otoño los estudiantes podrán usar sus tabletas ya estando en el Kínder. 7 The Highly Capable Program The Brewster School District is focused on successfully preparing all of our students for their future. The Highly Capable Program at Brewster School District is designed to meet the academic needs of the students in grades K-12 who are in the top 5% and demonstrate exceptional intellectual, creative, and academic skills. There is an opportunity for students to be nominated for this program by a parent, teacher, or community member. These nominations will be passed onto the Multidisciplinary Selection Committee for further review and looked at along with data from other resources. The district will offer appropriate instructional programs to meet the needs of the exceptionally gifted and talented students in our district. The objectives for our Highly Capable Programs students include: Expanding academic achievements and skills Encouraging intellectual curiosity, responsibility, and independence Developing creativity and originality Developing positive attitudes towards self-success The Brewster School District wants each and every one of our students to reach their full potential. Through this program, we plan to provide rich and accelerated opportunities to our students with an emphasis on higher level thinking and problem solving. District staff will prepare our students for future contributions they can make to society and encourage life-long learning. The Elementary School will be open from 8:00 3:00 Monday Friday. Visit to the Fish Hatchery On May 22nd the Kindergarten classes had the opportunity to visit the Chief Joseph Hatchery. They viewed the fish ladder, a video on the process of catching and releasing the salmon, took a tour of the facility and they feed the Parr (camouflaged fry).
