This year has really flown by and we are excited to see what the rest of the year has in store! Be sure to check the DSACC website and Facebook pages regularly for gathering and event updates and new opportunities that pop up in between the publishing of our bi-monthly newsletter. Planning is also about to get started on Step Up for Down Syndrome 2014 and we are looking for an event chairperson to help oversee the planning process, as well as more committee members. HOMEMADE SILLY PUTTY 1/4 cup white glue 1/4 cup water 1 tablespoon Borax Additional 1/8 cup water in a separate bowl food coloring of your choice transferring over into our putty. AND, you do not want to add too much of the Borax/water mixture or your silly putty will turn to gel mush. So when you add the first tsp of Borax/water- stir, stir, stir. You will immediately notice that some of the glue mixture will start to stick together. This is the chemical reaction from the Borax. Get started by mixing the 1/4 cup of water and 1/4 cup of glue in a bowl. Mix until well combined. Essentially you now have watered down glue. Add in a few drops of food coloring (about 4 drops). Stir to combine well. Set aside. Add the 1/8 cup of water to a measuring cup (it does not need to be warm or hot, straight from the tap is fine). Add in the 1 T of Borax. Stir as the Borax dissolves. You will notice that all of the Borax does not dissolve and there is some left on the bottom of your measuring cup. This is normal. Use a clean spoon to kind of ladle 1 tsp at a time, just the water from the Borax/water mixture. You do NOT want to add the undissolved granules. We are going to ladle the water mixture into the glue mixture one tsp at a time to prevent those granules 4 Add another tsp of the Borax water and stir some more. You will notice the glue mixture will lump together even more and get even thicker. Continue to stir. You will end up adding approximately 3 tsp. total of the Borax/water to glue mixture. The silly putty was still a bit gooey and slimy- this is normal. Remove it from the bowl and fold it and knead it like you re making bread. At first it will be sticky. You will see within a few seconds of doing this that it will take on the silly putty consistency. Do store it in an airtight container and keep it in the fridge so it will last longer. On the next page, draw a picture of your mom & dad and fill in the fields for great Mother's & Father's Day cards!

Parents of children with Down Syndrome are often concerned about the quality of speech that their children can attain. A common concern is that while children with Down Syndrome are able to achieve great progress in many areas, their speech may remain less clear or mushy. Why is this? It is a known fact that children with Down Syndrome have lower muscle tone overall, which can lead to the open mouth posture and forward tongue carriage that we often see. Physical therapy and occupational therapy work very hard at strengthening and fine tuning the use of the muscles for gross and fine motor skills. Speech therapy tends to focus on language and speech sounds, minus the strengthening component. There is plenty of research to support that oral motor activities (blowing bubbles, horns, etc.) do not improve speech clarity on their own. A new movement is making its way across the country and the results are significant. Oral Placement Therapy (OPT) focuses not only on strengthening the muscles used for articulating AND feeding, but also teaching correct placement for feeding and, in turn, speech. Eating food (specifically chewing and sucking) is imperative to building strength and coordination for speech. Ideally, OPT starts at birth. Instead of finding ways to make sucking easier, OPT finds ways to strengthen the muscles needed for sucking through the use of specific nipples and feeding positions. By teaching proper placement for sucking and encouraging strengthening of the muscles from birth, we reduce the risk of the open mouth posture and tongue protrusion. It is this position of the mouth that significantly impacts a child s ability to have clear speech. What can we do now? One of the main components of OPT is putting your child into a position of proper alignment that does not allow him/her to use other muscles to compensate for the weaker muscles in and around the mouth. OPT utilizes bite blocks, bubbles, horns, and straws to teach correct placement and strengthen the muscles. An OPT 7 activity is done and followed by a feeding or speech activity that is impacted by the placement that was just achieved through OPT. The important part to remember is that every OPT activity has a feeding or speech task directly related to it. This is a big difference between OPT and traditional oral motor therapy. OPT also looks at the impact that sensory processing difficulties can have on feeding and is incorporated into the therapy program. Bubbles are used to teach mouth closure and proper breath control for vocalizations. Straws and horns are used for lip closure, lip rounding, and tongue retraction. Bite blocks are used for teaching jaw strength and stability. A strong and stable jaw is a key component of speech production. The tongue cannot move independently if the jaw is unstable. Tongue retraction is very important so that speech sounds can be made accurately. Having the tongue resting forward in the mouth interferes with making most consonant sounds in the English language. Most of these activities can be done at home by the parent after being taught by a trained therapist. It is very important to be guided by a speech therapist or occupational therapist that is familiar with OPT. 9 Bike Camps! July 2014 ican Bike is a week long bike program that uses adapted equipment to help individuals with disabilities learn to ride a two-wheel bicycle. The Arc of Fresno and Madera Counties is pleased to offer this program through funding from the Central Valley Cycling Charitable Association. Requirements for Participation: (An individual is eligible to participate only if ALL items listed here apply.)... Minimum of 8 years of age Minimum inseam of 20" With a disability (learning disabilities included) Able to walk without assistive device Able to sidestep to both sides Able to wear a properly fitted bike helmet Maximum weight 220 Ibs. Must have a bike that fits ican Bike requirements Must be accompanied by Parent/Guardian during each session Must be able to attend all 5 sessions (each session is 75 minutes) Parent/Guardian must attend an Orientation the Sunday prior to their camp week. Camp 1: July Orientation on July 13, 2 4:00 pm New Harvest Church, 698 N. Minnewawa, Fresno Camp 2: July Orientation on July 20, 4 6:00 pm Fresno City College Gym, Fresno Camp fee for early registration is $100. After June 13, 2014, camp fee is $125. Scholarships may be available to those who qualify. Early registrants will receive a camp T-shirt and bike helmet. Registrations received after June 13 are not guaranteed a camp shirt and may be required to purchase their own bike helmet if the correct size is not available.
