(Photo, Christina Acosta) San Antonio has a new device in town that will allow patients and nurses to have a smoother yet organized experience at the hospital. The Methodist Specialty and Transplant Hospital, located in the Medical Center, is among the first hospitals in the United States to use a wireless monitoring system to improve patient care, comfort and safety. The new device, called the Visi Mobile system is designed to allow patients to have a better rest at their stay. According to information provided, the new equipment is a, body-worn monitor able to noninvasively measure all core vital signs on a highly accurate, beatto-beat basis. The wireless, wristworn device continuously tracks patient vital sign data and transmits the information to clinicians on-site or remotely, According to device information, in addition to continuous cuff less non-invasive blood pressure technology, the system continuously monitors: heart or pulse rate, electrocardiogram (ECG) or heart rhythm, blood oxygenation, respiration rate and skin temperature, all with intensive care unit-level accuracy. The system will also allow nurses to stay on their feet and have more wiggle room to check patient s vital signs. Her fixed-income does not leave her much wiggle room when it comes to repairs and paying bills, but that does not stop her from living in the same home she has lived in since the 1940s. Moreno is quick to admit she has no problem seeking help. The West Side resident calls the District 5 office so often she starts her phone conversations with a joking, Hi, it s me again. And apparently, it has worked to her advantage. The office has connected her to an array of services that help the elderly. Among the resources she is grateful for are the affordability programs by San Antonio Water Systems (SAWS) for seniors and low-income residents. SAWS offers a total of six different programs to ease the burden of utility costs for qualifying customers. Moreno has used SAWS Plumbers to People program on several occasions; the program provides plumbing assistance to low-income residential customers seeking repairs to leaking plumbing fixtures in their homes. Similarly, SAWS offers a Senior Citizen Billing program that offers residential customers who are 60 years of age or older an exemption of late payment charges on both water and sewer service charges. Other SAWS affordability programs include Project Agua, Affordability Discount, Disability Billing Program and Courtesy Notice Program. In an effort to educate the community about these available resources, SAWS and District 5 Councilwoman Shirley Gonzales will offer a free Affordability Program Fair at El Progreso Hall, located at 1306 Guadalupe St. on Sept. 19 from 9 a.m. noon. Councilwoman Gonzales and SAWS President and CEO Robert Puente block walked Tuesday morning to promote information about the upcoming fair and the resources available. We have found that people don t know about the programs, Puente told La Prensa. People are not using them, so we re doing some block walking to get the word out. Although these programs are not new, there are additional funds coming in to expand the resources. Puente explained that these additional funds come from rate payers and generous donations. The fair is open to all SAWS customers who may qualify for assistance, but Councilwoman Gonzales made it a point to spread the word out to her District 5 constituents. It was especially important for me because we have the neediest district, Gonzales told La Prensa. There is always a concern of raising rates and the people that are most in need shouldn t be affected by those increasing prices. Esta serie es la única biografía autorizada de Jorge Mario Bergoglio, papa Francisco y primer papa latinoamericano y jesuita. Cada episodio de Francisco, El Jesuita revelará el rostro del hombre detrás del papa, quién es, de dónde proviene y su vida en Argentina llena de eventos políticos, una intrincada carrera religiosa hasta su momento actual en el papado. La serie es producida por Anima Films y está basada en el libro El Jesuita. El papa Francisco emprenderá el viaje a Estados Unidos desde el próximo 22 al 27 de septiembre. Entre sus actividades está el dar un discurso en el Congreso. 6 6 LA PRENSA DE SAN ANTONIO 9 de septiembre de 2015 Utopia Fest brings in more quality than quantity By Christina Acosta christina@laprensasa.com As you enter into the great city of Utopia, you can only see paradise all around you Especially at the music festival. This weekend, the Utopia festival took full swing with many performers as well as many other activities you can enjoy both day and night. With less than 2,000 people, you can only guess that this is the type of festival that you are allowed more open space to get from place to place. As you step inside the festival, there are two small stages, even smaller crowds, and the mountains closing it in. The best thing about the festival is that the two stages hardly overlapped with one another and you can clearly hear your favorite band. Here are some bands that you must look out for: Riders Against the Storm, from Austin, marched to their own drum as they played songs including Shake, Ghetto People, and Satellite. During their performance they stomped the grounds of the stage, danced along with one another, and even got the audience ENTERTAINMENT at their feet moving along with the Texas heat. Valerie June, originally from Tennessee, shined with her southern accent and stepped into her voice singing Tennessee Tunes and Somebody to Love. After breaks from her music, she enjoyed hearing feedback from the audience to see if they were enjoying the show. She even did a signing after her show to reach her audience on a one-to-one basis. Her sweet personality and the life she is currently living can be heard in her new album, Pushin Against the Stone. If you are interested in looking for a new French band, you must listen to Les Hay Babies. A band from Canada, Les Hay Babies looked as if they came straight from the 60s ready to provide you with flower power. Although their music is not fully French (some songs were performed in English) the band provided a show that drove you into their songs, Salsa Sea, Fil de Telephone, and even a cover of Elton John s, Benny and the Jets. Les Hay Babies is a new band to look out for if you are love French indie-rock. To keep the night at an upbeat tempo RJD2 played house music that made the crowd jump up to the air and enjoy a night under the stars. Unlike other DJs who use their Apple computers to make music, RJD2 keeps it old school and constantly switched out records to keep his music in place. He was doing such a job at it that he had a nosebleed during the show, but did not stop the show. As the show played, neon lights popped up and gave you the ability to experience something similar to a 90s rave. After experiencing Utopia Festival, you cannot help but to be thankful for an underrated festival. The crowds were not pushy, merchandise was not overpriced, and everybody was friendly to one another. One of the best moments seen at the festival was watching other bands supporting the band or singer on stage. The setting of the festival was a calm and breezy area that allowed people to fully experience the music, yoga, and even activities for the kids. This truly was a paradise-filled festival that makes the quality of it a rewarding experience you would not normally see at a commercialized music haven. 7 9 de septiembre de 2015 LA PRENSA DE SAN ANTONIO 7 New budget at 1.7 billion approved by Commissioners Court Special to La Prensa Commissioners Court recently approved a 1.7 billion budget in a 4-1 vote. The new budget holds the current property tax rate steady, while providing increased funding for law enforcement, the justice system, technology and employee benefits. The court also adopted a tax rate of per 100 valuation. That rate is lower than the rollback rate of and higher than the effective tax rate of per 100 valuation. The tax rate, along with the senior citizen tax freeze and 50,000 veterans homestead exemption, results in a million tax savings for County taxpayers in the next fiscal year, which begins Oct. 1. There is quite a bit we will be able to get done with this budget, and we re taking care of some things that we ve had to push down the road in previous budgets, Commissioner Paul Elizondo said. We have gone from a 39 cent tax rate to cents over the years. We ve had deep discussions about cutting it further, but the important thing is that we get the resources we need for our employees to do their jobs. Commissioner Kevin Wolff, who cast the sole dissenting vote, said the court has done a good job managing the budget over the past few years, but he wanted to see an additional cut in the property tax rate this year. Commissioners lowered the county s property tax rate in the budget. There are a number of good items in the budget that are the types of services we re supposed to provide as county government, Commissioner Wolff said. But I know, as well as a number of property owners, I was very shocked by Bexar Appraisal District s increase in property valuations. And one way to take the sting out of that is by decreasing the tax rate. Commissioners Court voted unanimously to provide for an additional 34 digital dashboard cameras to the proposal of 151 cameras for the Bexar County Sheriff s Office. The cameras can be dismounted from the dashboard and worn by deputies as body cameras. County Judge Nelson Wolff asked the County Manager, District Attorney and Sheriff to work together on a policy that would address storage of and access to the camera footage. The policy is going to be very important, Judge Wolff said. We need to have answers to the issues of storage and how long we keep the footage. The adopted budget also includes funding for new public safety dispatchers in the Sheriff s Office and Fire Marshal s Office, as well as new radio equipment, technology and furniture for the new Regional Emergency Operations Center being constructed by the Bexar Metro Network district. Funding for the Criminal District Attorney s Office includes 2.2 million in program enhancements that will address criminal and civil cases associated with child abuse and neglect, and add staff at all levels that will help criminal cases move more quickly through the justice system. County Manager David Smith noted this is an investment that has already paid dividends when it comes to lowering the jail population. Commissioner Sergio Chico Rodriguez said he is especially appreciative of funding for infrastructure to help the growing parts of his Precinct 1. The budget includes new funding for roads in the amount of 31 million to include projects on Borgfeld, Fischer, Old Corpus Christi, Grosenbacher, Evans and Donop roads, among others. The funding also includes 2 million for traffic safety improvements, 1 million for drainage improvements and 1.5 million for road rehabilitation improvements. With the growth happening in South Bexar County it will be important to me to bring more law enforcement out to these neighborhoods, Commissioner Rodriguez said. I m happy to see we are moving forward with the Sheriff s patrol substations. The new budget will see the county s minimum wage for employees go from per hour to 13 per hour. Employees on the non-exempt pay table who are not affected by that increase will receive a three percent cost of living adjustment. A performance pay program for exempt and executive employees will be effective April 2016, with the amount of the salary increase dependent on the individual employee s performance. Our employees have gone with minimal increases in pay or no increase at all over the past few years, and we need to keep people who are providing extra service and doing good jobs, Bexar County Commissioners Court recently approved a new budget that will go to numerous county projects. 8 8 LA PRENSA DE SAN ANTONIO 9 de septiembre de 2015 HEALTH Metro Health inconspicuously reduces sodium at city-sponsored programs Special to La Prensa Metro Health registered dietitians have been at work to discretely change one ingredient in Citysponsored meals: sodium. The salty culprit has long-been associated with high rates of high blood pressure, heart attack and stroke. With a grant from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention Metro Health partnered with Selrico Food Services, a vendor servicing the City of San Antonio s PreK4SA, DHS Senior Nutrition Program and Parks & Recreation Summer Feeding programs, to look at high-sodium ingredients and help the vendor identify a lower-sodium substitute. The changes made resulted in more than 20,000 milligrams of sodium being removed from senior meals alone. Additionally, 73 percent of seniors surveyed reported satisfaction with the flavor of sodium-reduced meals. The changes help the meals provided through the city programs meet the nutritional recommendations of the 2010 US Dietary Guidelines for Americans. The win of this voluntary participation on behalf of Selrico Services is that the seniors and children have not noticed the sodium reduction in their meals and it helps the food manufacturers see that there is a market for producing foods that are healthier without necessarily being marketed as low sodium says Ellen Spitsen, Nutrition Coordinator with Metro Health. Of the many people we serve, seniors tend to have more healthrelated issues and in our community diabetes and high blood pressure are the most prevalent. Our culinary and nutritional teams have worked tirelessly to come up with freshly made specialties from soup to sauces to entrees that are not only low in sodium, but taste great and are healthier that what is available commercially in a can or premade package. Metro Health is completing the second year of a three-year award and will continue to work in the third year with Selrico in identifying foods and meals for sodium reduction. But I can also see it as an outpatient monitor system so that if physicians wanted to have a patient on something at home, they can order it, and they can have the doctor or nurse at a clinic to monitor a patient remotely and that is really the future. Las leyes promulgadas bajo esta autoridad solamente podrán establecer que la fundación caritativa de equipos deportivos profesionales use las ganancias de dicha rifa de caridad para pagar gastos razonables de publicidad, promoción, y administración. Cualquier ley promulgada bajo esta resolución solo le aplica a una entidad definida como una fundación caritativa de equipos deportivos profesionales en efecto el 1 de enero del Adicionalmente, cualquier ley promulgada bajo esta resolución solo podrá permitir que las rifas de caridad se lleven a cabo durante juegos deportivos alojados en casa de un equipo que sea un equipo profesional asociado con una fundación caritativa de equipos deportivos profesionales. Este derecho estaría sujeto a las leyes y regulaciones promulgadas con la intención de conservar y controlar la vida silvestre, y de preservar el futuro de la caza y de la pesca. The first stop on the mobile bookstore s nationwide tour is San Diego and later it will travel to other cities with a heavy Hispanic presence including Los Angeles, Chicago, Miami, New York and Laredo, Texas. By offering books in Spanish, the traveling bookstore, an initiative of Mexican publisher FCE, also seeks to help children with Hispanic roots preserve their culture through literature in that language. En sus dos últimos encuentros perdidos en el Coliseo Freeman las sanantonianas cayeron ante las visitantes chicas del Sun de Connecticut que por la mínima diferencia les negaron ganar en casa con cerrada pizarra de 73 a 72 puntos. También ante la actual monarca de la WNBA, Mercury de Phoenix, con marcador de 82 a 52. Phoenix se afianzó en el segundo lugar del oeste con marca de Su entrenadora en jefe Sandy Brondello, quien fuera asistente del entrenador Dan Hughes de 2005 a 2009 y entrenadora en jefe de Stars interinamente en la temporada 2010 (en la que tuvo marca de 14 victorias por 20 derrotas), se discutió en la estrategia superando a su expatrón Dan Hughes, quien además de ser el timonel en jefe firma como gerente general de Stars. Brondello, nativa de Australia y exjugadora de la WNBA donde jugó como guardia con los equipos Shock de Detroit en las temporadas 1998 y 1999, Miami Sol 2001 y 2002, y Storm de Seattle 2003, tuvo alentadoras palabras para Sophia Young- Malcom, a quien reconoció como una de las mejores aleras en la WNBA. Indicó además que para ella fueron excelentes experiencias cuando le tocó ser su entrenadora. El desarrollo del partido Stars vs. Mercury, estuvo lleno de acción a pesar de que la monarca lució superior a lo largo de 1 hora y 48 minutos que tuvo de duración el cotejo. Los fans de Stars, como de costumbre, no se sentaron hasta que San Antonio anotó sus dos primeros puntos en sorpresivo enceste ejecutado por Young-Malcom que faltando 7 minutos de juego puso el marcador 2-0. Seguida, la poste rival Brittney Griner emparejó la pizarra con canasta limpia para de ahí cerrar con broche de oro su actuación en 26:05 minutos de juego en los que aportó 22 puntos para ser la mejor encestadora del partido. Como dato importante de este encuentro Young-Malcom y Griner cursaron estudios en Baylor University, por lo que ambas tuvieron respaldo en las tribunas donde ex alumnos de dicha institución colegial estuvieron presentes para no perderse el combate entre dos grandes basquetbolistas que en sus respectivas épocas elevaron a nivel nacional al equipo colegial de baloncesto apodado Lady Bears de Baylor University con sede en la ciudad de Waco, Texas. Young-Malcom fue integrante del equipo Lady Bears en el año 2005 en el que se coronaron campeo nas derrotando al representativo colegial de Michigan State University en la NCAA Division I. Griner, de 24 años de edad y nativa de Houston, Texas, cursó estudios superiores en el periodo de guiando a Lady Bears al título nacional en el 2012 ante Notre Dame University, siendo nombrada como la Jugadora del Año por la agencia noticiosa AP. En su confrontación final tanto Sophia como Brittney lograron entretener al público asistente realizando espectaculares jugadas, con Young-Malcom moviendo el balón en 24:19 minutos de acción, en los que encestó 3 de 10 disparos al aro, con 2 de 2 tiros libres, 4 rebotes, 4 faltas personales, 1 robo, 6 balones perdidos y 8 unidades anotadas. Desde que ganaron su séptimo partido, que fue durante la noche en la que rindieron tributo a pacientes de cáncer y subasta anual de playeras color de rosa (ante Storm, 88-81), las Stars sufrieron 9 derrotas, consecutivas factor que las dejaron fuera del playoff en el oeste. Sus derrotas fueron ante Lynx con 2, Sparks de Los Ángeles 2, Storm 2, Liberty de Nueva York 1, Sun 1 y 1 ante Phoenix. Griner nos tomó la delantera. Se apoyó en el consistente juego defensivo y ofensivo de sus compañeras. Stars falló en nuestro plan de juego, no se concretaron los disparos a la canasta. En cuanto al juego de Sophia puedo decir que ella estuvo a la altura de su estilo de juego. Es una lástima que se retira del baloncesto, ella todavía tiene buen juego; sin embargo, no queda más que desearle todo lo mejor en lo que ella emprenda en el futuro, expresó Dan Hughes. Claro que me será difícil acostumbrarme a estar fuera de la cancha, aunque la temporada todavía no termina, nos quedan dos partidos de gira y ello me ayudará a digerir mi situación. The Scorpions had a golden opportunity to take the lead early in the game when Billy Forbes penetrated the Fury defense from the left side of the box in the 18th minute. He found Omar Cummings wide open at the top of the area, but the normally lethal striker looked to play provider and shifted the play towards Milton Palacios on the right. Palacios had an open look, but his one-timed shot went wide. The turning point of the match for the Scorpions came in 40th minute on a play at midfield. Defender Zourab Tsiskaridze went in for a sliding tackle and looked to get a touch on the ball before Ottawa s Mauro Eustaquio jumped to the turf, but referee Nima Saghafi saw otherwise and went to his pocket for a yellow card. Tsiskaridze was already on a yellow he had received in the 22, so the Alamo City boys quite suddenly found themselves playing the remainder of the game a man down. It s obviously difficult going a man down. No excuses, it shouldn t have happened. It was a lapse by [Tsiskaridze], said head coach Alen Marcina. In the 52nd minute, the Fury found their goal off of a set piece opportunity. The initial ball in resulted in a shot by the Fury that looked to have beaten San Antonio keeper Daniel Fernandes, but instead found Scorpions captain Rafael Castillo manning his position on the post. SPORTS Castillo was able to clear the ball off the line, only to see the Fury recycle the ball and eventually Paolo Junior set up Brazilian forward Oliver for a header into the back of the net. The goal was the first the Scorpions had conceded since August 15 at the New York Cosmos. The red and black continued to mount a short-handed attack and found a flurry of opportunities late in the match. Forwards Giuseppe Gentile and Eric Hassli came on in the 61st and 80th minutes, respectively, and helped generate the Scorpions chances. We were solid defensively and it was one of the things we had concerns on early on. We have fixed it, but Ottawa is the top team for a reason, continued Marcina. They are very organized, very disciplined, so hats off to them for grinding out a result, and hats off to my guys for fighting. It s not easy playing a man down against the best team in the league. The best of the match came in the 87 when Hassli controlled a ball just outside of the Fury s area with his back to goal and spotted César Elizondo making a run towards the box. Hassli laid the ball off perfectly and the Costa Rican hit the ball in stride, but it took a slight deflection off of an Ottawa defender s heel that redirected the shot just wide of goal. The Scorpions are back on the pitch midweek as they host the Carolina RailHawks on Wednesday night at Toyota Field before closing out the home stand next Saturday against Indy Eleven. We have like 10 games left maybe, so it s still 30 point to play for. We re going to put this one behind us, and the good thing is that we play on Wednesday, So we ll play with 11 guys for hopefully 90 minutes, Well put it behind us and go for the points on Wednesday and [next] Saturday same thing.
