Robberies, assaults and drive by shootings are on the rise across the metropolitan community leaving residents seeking ways to reclaim their neighborhoods and push crime out of their community. A recent spike in crime in the Westside neighborhood has business owners and residents talking to one another about what steps they can take to reduce the risk of becoming a crime statistic. As the recession hit Kansas City, it seemed that might have stayed a dream, as her family was hit hard by the economic downturn. She never gave up hope in the one thing she believed would help her escape a neighborhood that tried to pull her away from education and her goals. I grew up in a challenging neighborhood. It wasn t uncommon to see young boys looking like gangsters, hanging out in the neighborhood. I decided to become a role model for my brothers. I didn t want to see them join the gang, I wanted to show them that I could go to college and they could too, she said. 2 Mendoza s Legacy Helps Students Attend College UMKC, Chancellor Leo Morton told Hispanic News, Dr. Agapito Mendoza s legacy gives us something to talk about, it gives us an opportunity to bring people together and it will lead to better things for the university. Ortiz is a freshman and wants to become a Mechanical Engineer when she graduates. I am honored to receive this award because it means getting an education for me. Without this scholarship, it would have been very difficult for me to go to college. I would not be here, she said. Ortiz shared her story to a packed audience last week at the Agapito Mendoza Scholarship breakfast on the campus of UMKC. The annual event is a key fundraising tool set up in memory of Dr. Agapito Mendoza who was Director of Affirmative Action at the University and whose reach and interests extended beyond the university to the greater community. Mendoza served on a variety of boards including Guadalupe Center. UMKC is working hard to attract minority students to the local campus and they hope to increase the number of scholarships they can make available to students. This scholarship (Mendoza Scholarship) is important because the more people we can get here and the more funds we can que obtendré una educación. En estos momentos mi familia está verdaderamente en apuros económicos y sin la Beca Dr. Agapito Mendoza no estaría aquí, dijo ella. raise will increase the number of scholarships that we can make available to Hispanic students so that we can get them to attend here at UMKC, said Leo Morton UMKC Chancellor. Irene Mendoza, widow of Agapito, shared with the audience that her cousin Sandra Rascon once said, Education was a gift that Dr. Agapito Mendoza wanted Hispanic students to receive and throughout his years of teaching he instilled in them a thirst for knowledge. He continued despite all his health problems to educate students. Even in his last days on this earth, he still acknowledged the great importance of minorities in continuing their education. Ortiz wishes that she would have had the chance to meet Mendoza. As I stand here today and look at his picture, he looks so passionate for what he did and he looks like he really wanted to help students. He is helping students even now because of this UMKC Agapito Mendoza Scholarship, she said. He felt that minority students needed to see teachers of their same ethnic background at the school to encourage them to attend the local campus. Today, Chancellor Morton agrees that the campus faculty staff must mirror the community. Students will go places where they see people like them. It is important that we get faculty, staff and students here to reflect the community that we are a part of. I am so happy that Agapito Mendoza was here and left this legacy. This legacy gives us something to talk about, it gives us an opportunity to bring people together and it will lead to better things for the university, said Morton. Carlos Salazar, formerly of KCP&L and currently with United Way, is an alumnus of UMKC and was the keynote speaker. He recalled his talks with Dr. Mendoza on the plight of the Hispanic students at the campus. I witnessed firsthand the struggle that Latino students fighting for identity at this institution. It wasn t until Agapito made it a mission to insure equity, equality and inclusion that this began to change. He had experienced some of the same struggles our parents and grandparents did. Our forefathers arrived in this glorious country seeking steady work and a place to raise a family. They taught him the value of education, said Salazar. The Latino population has one of the highest high school dropout rates and community members like Salazar are encouraging families and others to influence students that they should stay in school and attend college. He hopes that the Latino community will work hard to help support scholarship funds to make college affordable for all Latino students that seek a higher education. Salazar read a statement from his brother Tony, As a people we have not reached our full potential. The glass ceiling still prevents us from participating in the board room of many corporations and foundations. Moving forward we must continue his dream to send our very best and brightest to college while at the same time assisting families in need and our newly arrived brothers to reach their dream. I know that these are difficult times, unprecedented times, very hard times and families are struggling and can t afford to give to worthy causes nor send their kids to college, but as a community, we can t afford not to. As Consuelo Cruz looked around the packed room she felt it was a tribute to Mendoza that during this economy so many people turned out for the fundraiser in support of the scholarship. This large attendance shows us how much Agapito meant to us. I think it says a lot, especially in this economic times, how the community is really rallying behind Agapito s memory and the scholarship to make sure that students [pursue education] especially now more than ever because of the economic position that we are in. We have to continue his legacy, and we have to make sure that kids stay in school and go onto college, said Cruz. 3 Residents Want to address Crime held last year, but the recent crime spree in the Westside community has neighbors and business owners requesting training sessions be held again to help them find the tools that they will need to stop crime from controlling their neighborhoods. It is my understanding there is an upswing in business related theft and assaults going on. Residents and business owners are very concerned, so we wanted to bring this session to the bilingual community so they can arm themselves with the tools they need, said Reynolds. Mbogo said that hosting a program about neighborhood safety is a good way for residents and business owners to come together and talk and begin to take a proactive stance against crime. We have had some homicides and thefts and there was a growing concern among the residents so the timing was right to put this program together, she added. The Neighborhood Watch and Block Watch program gives the residents the tools they need to know if they are confronted with crime or gives them information on how to reduce the chance of crime from happening at their home or office. We do this type of training all over the city. No matter what part of the city it is there is always crime going on, even in areas you wouldn t associate with being a crime ridden area. We want to make sure that we touch all areas with our program and try to be realistic about what is going on. It may never happen to the people who are attending the session but if it does we want them to be more prepared, said Reynolds. People are encouraged to get to know their neighbors by their names and exchange telephone numbers so they can be in contact with one another when a problem arises. That is one thing the training session does is encourage you to get to know your neighbors, and we know that you may not be able to get to know the entire block, but at least learn the neighbors right around your home or business. Exchange a contact number so that if something goes on around their home or in the neighborhood that they should know about, you have a way to contact them, said Mbogo. Ashley Guerra feels safe in her neighborhood and is thankful that her block has been exempt from the crime that seems to be invading the community. Unable to attend the neighborhood watch meeting, she is glad that they are holding these sessions and hopes that she will see the police be more visible around the area. I know there have been some incidents at the car wash and I have heard about some of the car break-ins. I have four kids and once it is night we don t go out just because there are some incidents. I do feel safe and I feel my husband keeps us safe, but I am glad that they are making the community more aware, she said. Residents are encouraged by both Reynolds and Mbogo to call the police if they see a robbery or a crime being committed. If you see something out of the ordinary or you suspect something is out of the ordinary, a lot of times people don t want to call Residentes quieren tratar la delincuencia Statistics taken from the Kansas City Missouri Police Department website Estadísticas extraídas de la página Internet del Departamento de Policía de Kansas City Missouri DRIVE BY SHOOTINGS IN KANSAS CITY MISSOURI BALACERAS HECHAS DESDE VEHÍCULOS EN MOVIMIENTO EN KANSAS CITY MISSOURI the police. The most important thing you can do is call the police and it gets reported and they track that information to see if they need more police in an area that is having a problem, said Mbogo. Guerra agrees that people seem to be afraid to call the police and get involve but they shouldn t be afraid, they should be concerned and watch out for one another. People are afraid to call because they think something may happen to you, don t hesitate to call and just be aware of your surroundings and if everyone is looking out for everyone else than things can get taken care of before it gets to the point of robberies, she said January/Enero February/Febrero March/Marzo April/Abril May/Mayo June/Junio July/Julio NA August/Agosto NA September/Septiembre NA October/Octubre NA November/Noviembre NA December/Diciembre NA To set up a Neighborhood Watch training session contact the City and Community Services at (816) Residents and business owners who attended the training sessions say they know that they all need to be more involved in protecting their community and they like the idea of becoming pro-active instead of reacting to crime in the neighborhood. If your minor children or grandchildren earn income, you may fund a Roth IRA on their behalf up to the lesser of $5,000 or the amount of their taxable earnings. You contribute on an after-tax basis, but the earnings grow, tax-free, until the account is tapped at retirement. For young people, these earnings can compound tremendously over time. For example, if you made only a one-time $1,000 contribution for your 16-yearold granddaughter, at 6 percent interest the account would be worth nearly $20,000 tax-free at age 66. If she contributed an additional $50 a month going forward, it would grow to more than $210,000 at 66. Fund someone s benefits. Many people cannot afford health insurance and so forego coverage, putting themselves just one serious illness or accident away from financial disaster. Many also cannot afford to fully fund their 401(k) plan or IRA. We were extremely pleased with the response from citizens on Sept. 19 and want to provide an additional opportunity for citizens, leaders and members of community and faith-based organizations to help support the health and safety of our community by serving as flu-support volunteers. At the Oct. 3 event, people who want to volunteer will fill out registration forms and receive training and credentials. 6 Safety Tips might save your life Fall is the time of year to get your house in order before winter sets in. For most homeowners, this means it is once again time for a good, oldfashioned gutter cleaning. According to Robert Lenney, gutter cleaning expert, it s the semi-annual project that strikes fear into the heart of all urban and suburban warriors who face that dreaded request, Honey, it s time to clean out the gutters! Each year, Consumer Reports states that about 180,000 homeowner accidents and fatalities occur that are ladder related. That is why it s best to be prepared to do the job right. Here are a few tips and tricks that Lenney, coowner of Commercial Gutter Inc., suggests for safe and effective gutter cleaning: 1. Ladder Safety: Always let someone know you will use a ladder to work on your roof or gutters. Use a safe and sturdy ladder, preferably with a small shelf strong enough to hold a five-gallon bucket to collect gutter debris. Make sure to secure the bucket with a lanyard. We recommend a four-legged step ladder for a single story home, and an extension ladder for a two-story home. An orchard ladder is not recommended because there are only three legs for support and they can become unbalanced. A wooden ladder is also not recommended because they are often wobbly and difficult to safely balance. Fiberglass ladders seem to be the sturdiest, but are also the heaviest. Inspect the ladder for defects, dents or loose parts before climbing. Before climbing the ladder, lightly jump on the first rung a few times to make sure the ground is secure. Sometimes the soil is soft, or there might be a hole underneath one of the ladder legs. A piece of half-inch plywood can be placed under the ladder legs to keep it level and steady. When climbing the ladder, always remember the Three Point Rule. As much as possible try to have both legs and one hand firmly secure on the ladder at all times to provide stability and balance while cleaning. Conversely, do not lean out from the ladder balancing on one leg while using two hands to clean debris from the gutter. Oftentimes, it is this stretching and reaching for that last scoop of debris that lands a person in the hospital. Lastly, if possible, have someone hold the ladder to provide additional safety while climbing. 2. Garden Hose: To use a garden hose with normal water pressure, simply attach a pistolgrip trigger spray nozzle. This type of spray nozzle allows you to adjust the water pressure with the use of just one hand. Spraying out the gutter is generally best when most of the larger debris has already been removed. It s difficult to spray out leaves and pine needles that have piled up over the summer and fall. Spray toward the downspout (leader pipe) so the small, murky debris flows down the downspout. If the downspout is connected to an underground drain that goes out to your street, the base of the downspout needs to be disconnected so the debris can be released at this point, preventing a potential clog further down the system under your lawn or driveway. 3. Gutter Scoop: Scooping out the leafy debris seems to be the best overall method for cleaning out the gutter. An excellent tool for this job is the bright orange plastic Gutter Getter scoop. This tool is unique because the front scooping edge is very thin and it forms itself to the bottom of the gutter trough, making it easy to scoop out even the toughest of debris in any size gutter system. Stay away from using a metal scooping tool because the bottom of the gutter and seams can be damaged. Scraping the bottom of a steel gutter can introduce areas to rust, and if the bottom of the gutter is already rusting, the rusting process could speed up. Using a metal scooping tool can also damage seams in the gutter. An extension pole can also be attached to the gutter scoop for reaching farther to clean the gutter, reducing ladder moves. 4. Wear Gloves: Gloves can help protect hands against dirty, rotting leaf debris that often contains bird, pigeon and squirrel droppings that are ridden with bacteria. Gloves can also prevent painful cuts from the torn metal shards of an old, ragged gutter. Cotton gloves can soak up dirty water that exposes skin to bacteria. Leather gloves are not as maneuverable and tend to shrivel up when they dry after cleaning. Rubber gloves can be poked or torn by metal shards in the gutter. Thick, suede glove material is recommended because it is superior to cotton, thin leather or rubber gloves. 5. Protective Eye Wear: Eye protection is necessary because one never knows what might fly out of the downspout when cleaning gutters. People have experienced rats, birds, frogs, wasps and bees leaving at high speeds once they start removing a clog, and the last thing they want to have happen is an eye injury. 6. Rake Off Roof: Rake all debris off the roof first. Otherwise, the next rain will wash all the debris down into the clean gutter, clogging it again. Also, debris left on the roof can lead to water damming up in valleys or around the chimney, which can cause erosion and roof leaks over time. 7. Rubber Shoes: If walking on the roof is necessary to perform gutter cleaning, it is good to use rubber soled shoes. Rubber soles tend to adhere best and prevent slipping and falls. Roof tops tend to be moist in the morning, so it is best to walk on the roof after the sun is well up in the sky and has dried up all the moisture. Late mornings or early afternoons are the best times to walk on a roof. For wood shake roofs, an excellent option is to wear special spiked roofing shoes called Korkers, which have small, metal spikes similar to golf shoes, helping attain a good grip when walking on the roof. However, if the gutter cleaning project is bad enough to warrant Korkers, it is probably best at that point to use a professional gutter cleaning company. Wearing Korkers can be tricky, and slips can still occur. 8. Downspouts Unclogged: Make sure the downspouts (leader pipe) are clear. After all the gutters are cleaned out, run the water hose down the downspout at full pressure. If the water backs up out of the top, a clog is present. Normally, it can be unclogged by tapping on the side of the downspout. But if that doesn t work, the downspout and back need to be removed, and it should be flushed from the bottom. If a clog is present, and the downspout is connected to an underground drain, it is best to disconnect the bottom of the downspout from the underground drain. Otherwise, the clog may move to the underground drain. 9. Downspout Chain: If the downspout makes an annoying dripping sound during or after a rain storm, a special decorative chain can be installed to hang down in place of a traditional downspout. The rainwater runs down the chain gracefully and looks rather beautiful, like a decorative fountain. 10. Clean Gutters Two Times A Year: Make sure gutters are cleaned at least twice a year, once in the fall and again in the spring. One main reason for cleaning out gutters is to eliminate the possibility of water damage from rainwater runoff due to a clogged gutter. Another reason is to reduce the possibility of rust corrosion. 11. Power Line Hazard: When cleaning gutters around a power line cable that drops from the power pole to the roof of a home, conduct a visual inspection of the electrical cable where it connects to the roof. This is to ensure that the protective wire insulation hasn t rubbed off through years of wear-and-tear by weather and nearby trees. If the cable appears to have damage, do not attempt to repair it. Call a licensed professional electrical contractor to fix it. It is not advisable to use a metal ladder near power lines when cleaning out your gutters. A fiberglass ladder is a better safety solution in this situation. 12. Gutter Guards: Using a quality gutter guard can eliminate the need for cleaning out gutters. Consider carefully the manufacturer s claims before purchasing a gutter protection system that keeps out leaves and pine needles, because many promises are made that can t be delivered. University of Saint Mary to have Fall Open House at Main Campus in Leavenworth The University of Saint Mary in Leavenworth will hold an open house from 1-4 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 9. Prospective students will get the chance to learn more about USM and its academic programs, talk with professors and current students, and take student-led campus tours. The open house will be at the main campus, 4100 South 4th Street in Leavenworth. USM is experiencing a period of unprecedented growth that is expected to benefit all future Saint Mary students. The university in September dedicated Berkel Hall, its $4.7 million 100-bed apartment-style residence hall. USM also recently expanded its pre-professional heath program offerings. One year after opening its new football/soccer complex, the university is initiating a new cheerleading program. This fall, USM welcomed its largest freshman class in history, and the university has been named a Best Midwestern College by The Princeton Review for a fifth consecutive year. At the open house, prospective students can also gain information about scholarships and financial aid, and payment plan options. We work very hard to make the University of Saint Mary an affordable option for every student, said Judy Wiedower, USM s director of financial aid. In fact, 98 percent of all full time students receive some form of financial aid, including scholarships. The university is a participant in the Yellow Ribbon Program, which supplements existing Post-9/11 GI Bill Benefits. Eligible students will attend USM tuition and fees-free. Visit www. stmary.edu/veterans for details. Open house participants will learn about other USM benefits, including the free netbooks made available to all incoming full-time freshmen and USM s vibrant campus life. Registration is required. Call or visit for information. Checkin begins at 12:30 p.m. on the first floor of Mead Hall. The University of Saint Mary is a Catholic co-educational applied liberal arts university founded and sponsored by the Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth. In addition to its main campus in Leavenworth, the University of Saint Mary has locations in Overland Park, Shawnee, and Kansas City, Kan.
