HOW YOUR TRANSIT SYSTEM WORKS - provides bus service to the greater and areas, as far south as Paso Robles and Big Sur and as far north as Watsonville and San Jose. Service originates from two primary locations the Plaza, in central, and the, in downtown (see maps below). From these two locations, the bus lines branch out like spokes on a wheel (see pages 14 &15). 3 City. On most lines, the bus travels out to its terminal, the end of the "spoke," then returns to its point of origin. The Watsonville lines connect with Santa Cruz Metropolitan District (METRO) at the Watsonville in downtown Watsonville (see maps below and on page 8). Line 55 San Jose Express and Line 79 Presidio San Jose Express connect with Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) in downtown San Jose and the Gilroy, Morgan Hill and Diridon Caltrain s. Line 83 Fort Hunter Liggett Paso Robles Express connects with San Luis Obispo Regional Authority at the Paso Robles Transportation. emergency guaranteed ride home (EGRH) Commute Alternatives, a program of the Association for Bay Area Governments (AMBAG), provides a guaranteed ride home in an emergency to registered users who use alternative transportation to get to work. The EGRH program is available to commuters who live or work in County and who ride the bus, carpool, vanpool, ride a bicycle or walk to work at least one day a week. In order to participate, you must register with Commute Alternatives by calling (831) This service will reimburse up to $60 for a taxi or rental car in case personal illness, sick family member, a serious problem at a child's school or day care, or if you must unexpectedly work late. COMMUTER CHECK PROGRAM The Commuter Check Program allows businesses to subsidize their employees commute to work by public transit, Amtrak, and van pooling. Customers can save up to $500 per year if their company employer enrolls in an independently administered program called Commuter Checks. To sign up, a customer must notify their employer of the Commuter Check program and then have their employer contact the Commuter Check organization directly by calling or More information is also available on the Commuter Check web site at HOW TO RIDE THE BUS The following steps will answer some questions and help make your trip a pleasant one. For questions about bus stop locations or trip planning, please feel free to call MST toll free at MST- BUS1 or visit 1. WHERE DO I CATCH THE BUS? Bus stops are identified with an MST sign. Check the sign for which bus lines stop there. Signal the coach operator to stop by standing up at a bench or shelter when the bus approaches. Please be at the stop to signal that you want to board. Arrive at your stop a few minutes early so you can be in place to signal the bus. Have your fare, pass or ticket ready when boarding. Buses stop only at designated MST stops. 2. WHICH BUS LINE DO I TAKE? See the bus service diagrams on pages 14 & 15 to determine which bus lines will take you to your destination. You may need to transfer from one line to another to reach that destination. See page 8 for transit center boarding locations. Identify your bus by looking for the bus line number and direction in the sign above the windshield. Buses headed toward a transit center or transit exchange will say,, Marina or Edgewater. Buses headed toward other destinations will state the furthermost stop in that direction. For example: 5 Carmel This bus is heading away from the Plaza to Carmel 5 This bus is heading toward the Plaza Before boarding, check the sign to make sure it is the bus you want to take. If you are not sure, ask the coach operator to help you. 5

4 3. WHEN WILL THE BUS ARRIVE? The schedules for each bus line are in this Rider's Guide. They are listed by line number. See the directory on the cover. Each line has a map and departure schedule with timepoints for several stops along its route. The buses travel through the schedule from the left to the right. The timepoints in the schedule correspond with the timepoints shown on the map. TIMEPOINT 4. HOW DO I PAY? You can use cash, GoPasses, or a GoCard on all MST buses. Have your payment ready when you board. Cash goes in the farebox. Exact change required. Change cards can be used for future fares and are not redeemable for cash. Change cards do not expire. Swipe your GoPass or tap your GoCard on the farebox. If you are using a discounted fare (youth, seniors, disabled, Medicare card holders, and active duty military), the coach operator may ask to see your ID. See page 7 for details. 5. WHERE DO I SIT? After paying your fare, quickly move to a vacant seat. Please be aware that seniors and disabled persons have priority to the seats directly behind the coach operator. If all seats are taken, hold on to the grab rails. Please offer your seat to someone who may have difficulty standing on a moving bus if you are able to stand comfortably. 6. LEAVING THE BUS Watch for your destination or ask the coach operator to call it out as the bus approaches that stop. Signal the coach operator that you wish to get off at the next stop by pulling the cord above or between the windows. When the bus stops, get up and exit through the rear doors when possible. Additional Information Wheelchair Accessibility MST Courtesy Card Bicycles on Buses All MST buses are wheelchair accessible. The MST Courtesy Card is available to individuals 65 and older or qualifying disabled individuals free of charge with a completed MST application verified by an appropriate medical practitioner. Applications are processed at the MST Bus Stop Shop. Use the card when boarding a bus and showing discount GoPass or paying discount fare. Call MST for more information at MST-BUS1, Monday Friday, 8:00 A.M. 4:45 P.M. Bikes ride free with paying passengers on all MST buses. Two bikes fit on the front rack and two in the wheelchair securement area as space is available. Maximum bike size is 80" long by 40" high. (Motorized bikes are not permitted.) IMPORTANT: Be sure to ask the coach operator to wait for you to unload your bike when you leave the bus. For bike loading instructions see page 18. 6
