2 Pastoral Reflection Reflecting on God's Word It's not that the Pharisee's prayer is a bad prayer. It starts out well: "O God, I thank you..." Gratitude is good. But then it gets into boasting: "I am not like the rest of humanity... I fast... I pay tithes" (Luke 18:11, 12). It's a Little Jack Horner prayer. Remember the old nursery rhyme that ends with Jack saying, "What a good boy am I!"? The Pharisee's prayer is all about him and what he does, all the while gauging the distance between himself and the rest of humankind. In contrast, the tax collector "stood off at a distance" with bowed head, beating his breast and saying, "O God, be merciful to me a sinner" (18:13). He knows who he is and who God is and what God alone can do for him. No repetitive "I," no swelling ego there, just a repentant figure, one who asks to receive what only God can give--mercy. Jesus tells this story "to those who were convinced of their own righteousness and despised everyone else" (18:9). How do we hear it? It acknowledges God who makes us "just," that is, who helps us to be in proper relationship with God, with each other, and with all creation. Sirach reminds us that our just God hears the cry of the oppressed, the wail of the orphan, the complaint of the widow, the petition of those who serve God willingly, and the prayer of the lowly. These folks allow room for God to enter their minds and hearts, and then all kinds of things can begin to happen, both within and all around them. --James A. Wallace, C.SS.R. En realidad comienza bien: Dios mío, te doy gracias... La gratitud es algo bueno. Pero entonces empieza a vanagloriarse: no soy como el resto de los hombres... ayuno... pago los diezmos (Lucas 18:11, 12). Esa clase de oración me recuerda a una antigua canción de cuna en inglés donde al final el niño Jack dice: Qué niño más bueno soy! La oración del fariseo se enfoca en él mismo y en las cosas que hace midiendo la distancia entre él y el resto de la humanidad. En contraste el recaudador de impuestos, manteniéndose a distancia, se mantenía cabizbajo y se golpeaba el pecho diciendo: Dios mío, ten compasión de mí, que soy un pecador (18:13). Él sabe quién es él y quién es Dios, y sabe también lo que sólo Dios puede hacer por él. En su oración no está el yo repetitivo ni un ego creciente, sino alguien arrepentido que pide lo que sólo Dios puede dar: misericordia. Jesús le hace esta historia a los que presumían de ser hombres de bien y despreciaban a los demás (18:9). De qué manera la escuchamos nosotros? Esta historia reconoce que es Dios quien nos hace justos, o sea, quien nos ayuda a mantener nuestras buenas relaciones con Dios, con los demás y con toda la creación. El libro del Eclesiástico nos recuerda que nuestro Dios justo escucha el clamor del oprimido, la súplica del huérfano, las quejas de la viuda, la oración del que sirve de buen grado y la del humilde. Esta gente deja que Dios entre en su mente y en su corazón, y así comienzan a suceder muchas cosas, tanto interiormente como al derredor. James A. Wallace, C.SS.R. 5 October 27, 2013 Thirtieth Sunday in Ordinary Time All Saints and All Souls Join us for a Mass of Thanksgiving on All Saints Day, November 1 at 7:00pm. We will be remembering all our benefactors, both past and present. Let us appreciate what St. John reminds us, Beloved: See what love the Father has bestowed on us that we may be called the children of God. Yet so we are. May our deeds be a prayer to God. A small reception will follow in that parish hall. On All Souls Day, November 2nd, we will remember all of our loved ones who have died. We invite you to bring pictures of your loved ones who you would like remembered in our special altar the entire month of November. The deadline for registration is Sunday, October 29 and the suggested donation is $20.00 per name.
