For program details, see salt.mcc.org or yamen.mcc.org The SALT/ YAMENer will focus on developing basic music skills and knowledge in the music school in Santiago de Chiquitos, promoting participants general musical development through rehearsals and lessons, in coordination with the parents board of the music school and Bolivian teachers. Qualifications: All MCC workers are expected to exhibit a commitment to: a personal Christian faith and discipleship; active church membership; and nonviolent peacemaking. 1. Intermediate level of Spanish required. 2. Experience teaching music is essential as is a love for children of all ages, and experience working with children. 3. Experience and education in orchestra direction is highly desired so that the applicant can focus on developing the string orchestra program. 4. The ability to tutor in piano/keyboard, teach music theory, choir, guitar, and/or string instruments are all assets to this position. 5. Confidence, self-motivation and the ability to take initiative. 6. Ability to work in a relatively isolated setting. 7. Familiarity with and interest in the history and performance of baroque and renaissance music. Assignment Narrative: This position is for the person who loves music and children, and can make learning music a fun and contagious activity. The ideal candidate will exude a love for music and be able to transmit that enthusiasm to their students as they teach them music. The music school is looking for someone who can lead their string orchestra program, working with students of all ages from kindergarten to secondary school. Students often have an abundance of talent, and can benefit from a teacher who is able to refine and develop their skills. Likewise, there is also room to teach beginning piano/keyboard, teach music theory, basic guitar, or string instruments as match the candidate s skills and interests. North and east of the city of Santa Cruz is a region known as the Chiquitania. In this region, the Jesuit missions of the late 1600s established music schools and taught the baroque music tradition. There are a number of communities that boast beautiful mission churches and large archives of music written both by the European Jesuits and Bolivians. In recent years, various communities and organizations have been working to restore and reclaim this musical heritage of the Jesuit era. The volunteer will support the work of Bolivian music teachers at the small music school in the community of Santiago de Chiquitos by focusing on building a foundation of music knowledge among students primarily through keyboard and piano instruction. The music school in Santiago has a choir, composed mostly of teenagers and an orchestra of approximately 20 teenage participants, as well as two beginner string groups with younger children. Due to the scarcity of printed music and the reading level (of musical notation) of the players, music must be taught in a manner that relies on memorization and rote learning. An organ was donated to the Catholic Church in Santiago opening up possibilities for organ lessons as well.

2 The music school in Santiago is governed by a parents board who currently oversee two full-time music teachers and receives financial support from the Municipality (county) of Roboré, the Bolivian Ministry of Education, and the Rotary Club. The music school is loosely affiliated with a Bolivian organization called APAC (Asociacion Pro Arte y Cultura), whose resources include music libraries and other connections. The Youth String Orchestra Facilitator & Music Tutor will live with a Bolivian host family in Santiago de Chiquitos. There is also a former MCC volunteer and his wife (a musician) and family who live in Santiago de Chiquitos who act as additional support in this relatively isolated setting. Duties: The duties outlined below are guidelines and can be adapted to better balance the needs of the music school with the skill sets and interests of the volunteer. 1. Provide music lessons primarily piano and keyboard (at a beginning level), and other instruments where possible (depending on area of expertise and as time allows). 2. Plan and direct rehearsals for the orchestra and/or choirs of Santiago in coordination with the Bolivian teachers and based on the volunteer s experience and skill set. These rehearsals typically happen in the late afternoon and early evening after the school day. 3. Accompaniment of students during solo performances. 4. Work with the music school coordinator and parents board the regarding schedule and concert logistics. 5. Accompany the music school board in the process of strengthening their organizational structure for the long term sustainability of the school. 6. Occasionally travel with choir and/or orchestra and other chaperones to other communities to present concerts. Location Description: Bolivia is officially a Spanish-speaking country, though over 30 indigenous languages are also spoken, the most common being Aymara, Quechua and Guarani. There is also a significant population of Low-German speaking Colony Mennonites, with 70,000 located primarily in the department of Santa Cruz. Santa Cruz is a place of much cultural diversity due to high rates of migration from various regions of Bolivia, as well as rural colonies (Japanese, Russian, Low German Mennonite, highland Bolivians). As a result, the political and cultural divisions of Bolivia are felt acutely in the department of Santa Cruz. Regionalism is a major issue all over the country and Santa Cruz is no exception. At times one encounters strong opinions and attitudes about current events and other regions of Bolivia. Santiago de Chiquitos is a small, beautiful, rustic town of around 2,000 people with one paved road and few motor vehicles. It is almost due east of the city of Santa, in the tropical lowlands of Bolivia. Most of the year is hot and humid, but south winds and rains during the winter months of June through September can bring temperatures down to C (50's F). Santiago de Chiquitos is accessed from Santa Cruz by taking a six hour bus ride to the small city of Roboré, and then a 15-minute taxi or bus ride onward to Santiago. Train is also an option to Roboré, although it takes around 12 hours to arrive. Santiago is also an up-and-coming tourist destination for Bolivians and Brazilians, known for its superb hiking, summer time mango festival, carnavál celebrations, hot springs, and striking escarpment scenery. The MCC center is located near the center of Santa Cruz and includes an office, kitchen and guest rooms, library, basketball/volleyball court, and outdoor space. MCC Bolivia includes approximately ten foreign workers and ten Bolivian workers, who gather for team meetings 3-4 times year. Spanish is the language of the MCC office; some people also speak English. All MCCers in Bolivia are expected to know or learn Spanish, and three weeks of Spanish language study are provided upon arrival for SALT/YAMEN participants who desire it. All SALT/YAMENers live with a Bolivian host family in order to enhance their cross-cultural experience in Bolivia. Host families serve as the worker s primary community and point of entrance into Bolivian daily life and culture. Most workers develop close and long-lasting relationships with their host families and report this as one of the key aspects of their experience.

3 Challenges: Given a general lack of structure and guidance, the volunteer who takes initiative and is a self-starter will thrive in this position. Challenges include prioritizing tasks amidst lots of possible involvements and discerning the most sustainable way to support the music school. Likewise, Santiago de Chiquitos is a rural and rustic location, and a small town that allows for less anonymity compared to a large city. This requires a higher standard of personal integrity and the commitment to make the most of the unique opportunities that come with living in the Bolivian campo. Seasonal dust, pollen and smoke around Santiago can sometimes severely aggravate allergies. Santiago has limited medical facilities including a small clinic and basic pharmacy. Slightly more sophisticated medical attention is available an hour s drive away in Roboré, while first-class medical care is located seven hours drive away in Santa Cruz de la Sierra. All SALT/YAMEN workers are placed with host families and may or may not have access to various comforts such as hot water showers and washing machines at home. In Santiago, internet is available at internet cafes and because Santiago is quite small, all daily transport is on foot. A general willingness to be flexible is very important. Cualificaciones: 1. Se requiere nivel intermedio de español. 2. Experiencia de enseñar música en alguna forma es esencial así como un amor para niños de todas edades y experiencia de trabajar con niños. 3. Competencia como tutor de piano o teclado es muy deseado. 4. Capacidad de enseñar teoría de música, coro, guitarra y/o otros instrumentos de cuerdas son ventajas para esta posición. 5. Descripción de Trabajo: Está posición es para la persona que ama la música y niños, y puede hacer el aprendizaje de la música una actividad divertido y contagioso. El/La candidata/a ideal exudará un amor para la música y será capaz de transmitir aquel entusiasmo as sus estudiantes mientras les enseñará música. La escuela busca una persona para liderar su programa orquesta, trabajando con estudiantes de todas edades del kínder a la secundaria. Los estudiantes mayormente tienen una abundancia del talento y se beneficiarían de un maestro que puede refinar y desarrollar sus capacidades. Así como hay posibilidades para enseñar piano/teclados básicos, enseñar la teoría de música, guitarra básica, o instrumentos de cuerdas dependiendo de las capacidades e intereses del candidato. Ubicado al norte y este de la ciudad de Santa Cruz es la región conocida como la Chiquitania. En esta región las misiones Jesuitas fueron establecidas en el siglo XVII junto con escuelas de música que enseñaron la tradición de música barroca. Hay unas comunidades que tienen iglesias misionales bellas y archivos grandes de música escrito por ambos Jesuitas europeos y bolivianos. En años recientes varias comunidades y organizaciones han estado trabajando para restaurar y reclamar este patrimonio musical de la etapa Jesuita. El voluntario apoyará al trabajo de los maestros bolivianos de música en la escuela pequeña de música en la comunidad de Santiago de Chiquitos por enfocar en construir una fundación de conocimiento musical entre los estudiantes primariamente a través de la instrucción de piano y teclados.

4 La escuela de música en Santiago de Chiquitos tiene un coro, compuesto mayormente de adolescentes y una orquesta de alrededor de 20 participantes así como dos grupos principiantes de instrumentos de cuerdos con niños más jóvenes. Debido a la falta de música imprimida y el nivel de lectura (de la notación musical) de los participantes hay que enseñar la música en una manera que demanda la memorización y la repetición. Un órgano fue donado a la iglesia católica en Santiago que tal vez provee oportunidades para lecciones del órgano también. La escuela de música en Santiago está gobernado por una junta de padres que actualmente gestiona dos maestros de música de tiempo completo y una coordinadora de medio-tiempo y recibe apoyo financiero de la Municipalidad de Roboré, el Ministerio de Educación, y el Club Rotario. La escuela música esta libremente afiliada con la organización boliviana Asociación Pro Arte y Cultura (APAC) cuyos recursos incluye bibliotecas de música y otras conexiones. El/La Facilitador/a de Coros de Jóvenes y Tutor de Música vivirá con una familia anfitriona boliviano en Santiago de Chiquitos. También hay un ex-voluntario de CCM y su esposa (una música) quienes viven en Santiago de Chiquitos y son un apoyo adicional en esta ubicación relativamente aislada. Deberes: Los deberes abajo son guías y pueden estar adaptados para mejor balancear entre las necesidades de la escuela de música con las capacidades e intereses del voluntario/a. 1. Proveer lecciones de música primariamente piano y teclado (un nivel principiante) y otros instrumentos donde está posible (depende del conocimiento del voluntario/a y del tiempo disponible). 2. Planificar y realizar prácticas para los coros y/o orquestas de Santiago en coordinación con los maestros bolivianos y dependiendo en las experiencias y capacidades del voluntario/a. Estas prácticas típicamente están en las tardes y noche después de las horas escolares. 3. Acompañamiento de estudiantes durante interpretaciones solos. 4. Trabajar con la coordinadora de la escuela y la junta de padres sobre los logísticos del horario y conciertos. 5. Acompañar la junta de padres en el proceso de esforzar su estructura organizacional para la sostenibilidad de largo plazo para la escuela. 6. Ocasionalmente viajar con el coro y/o orquesta y otros chaperones a otras comunidades para realizar conciertos. Descripción de la Ubicación: Bolivia es un país que oficialmente habla el castellano pero hay más que 30 idiomas indígenas reconocidas, los más comunes son Aymara, Quechua, y Guarani. También hay una población notable de Menonitas de colonias que hablan Bajo Alemán con 70,000 mayormente ubicado en el departamento de Santa Cruz. Santa Cruz es un lugar de mucha diversidad cultural debido a sus tasas altas de migración de varias regiones de Bolivia así como colonias rurales (japoneses, rusos, Menonitas bajo alemán, y bolivianos del altiplano). Como resulto, las divisiones políticas y culturales se sienten sumamente en el departamento de Santa Cruz. El regionalismo es un asunto grande por todo el país y Santa Cruz no es una excepción. A veces se encuentra opiniones fuertes y actitudes sobres la coyuntura y otros lugares en Bolivia. Santiago de Chiquitos es un pueblo, sencillo, y bello de personas pequeño con una calle pavimentada y pocos vehículos. Es casi directamente al este de la ciudad de Santa Cruz de la Sierra en las tierra bajas de Bolivia. La mitad del año hace calor y húmedo pero los vientos del sur y lluvias de los meses del invierno de junio hasta septiembre pueden bajar la temperatura hasta C. Se accede a Santiago de Chiquitos de Santa Cruz de la Sierra por una flota de seis horas a la ciudad pequeña de Roboré y después toma un taxi o micro de una hora hasta Santiago. El ferrocarril también es una opción hasta Roboré aunque requiere casi 12 horas para llegar. Santiago es un destino turístico creciente para los bolivianos y brasileros, conocido por sus paseos excelentes, festival de mango, celebraciones de carnaval, aguas calientes y escarpes con vistas impresionantes. La oficina de CCM está ubicada acerca del centro de Santa Cruz de la Sierra y tiene una oficina, cocina, salas para invitados, biblioteca, cancha y espacios afueras. CCM Bolivia tiene aproximadamente diez trabajadores extranjeros y diez trabajadores bolivianos quienes juntan para reuniones de equipo 3-4 veces por año. Español es el idioma de la oficina de CCM; alguna gente también habla inglés. Todos los CCMeros tienen que aprender es español. Todos los trabajadores de SALT/YAMEN! vivirán con una familia anfitriona boliviana para mejorar su experiencia transcultural en Bolivia. Las familias anfitrionas se sirven como la comunidad primaria del/a

5 trabajador/a y punto de entrada a la vida cuotidiana y la cultura boliviana. Muchos de los trabajadores desarrollan relaciones cercas y de largo plazo con sus familias anfitrionas y cuentan como uno de los aspectos claves de su experiencia. Desafíos: Debido a la falta de infraestructura y direcciones en general, el/la voluntario/a que toma la iniciativa prosperará en esta posición. Desafíos incluye priorizar las tareas entre muchas posibilidades y discernir la manera más sostenible de apoyar a la escuela de música. Igualmente, Santiago de Chiquitos es un lugar rural y rustico y en un pueblo pequeño no hay campo para tanto de anonimia como en una ciudad. Este se requiere un estándar más alto de integridad personal y el compromiso para hacer el mejor de esta oportunidad único que viene con la vida en el campo boliviano. El polvo de las temporadas, el polen y el humo alrededor de Santiago a veces pueden agravar seriamente a las alergias. Santiago tiene facilidades médicas limitadas incluso una clínica y farmacia básica. Atención medica un poco más sofisticada está disponible hace una hora en Roboré mientras el cuidado medica de primer clase esta hace siete horas en Santa Cruz de la Sierra. Todos los trabajadores de SALT/YAMEN vivirán con familias anfitrionas que podrían tener o no tener acceso a varias comodidades como duchas calientes o lavarropas en el hogar. En Santiago internet está disponible en cabinas de internet y debido a que el pueblo está muy pequeño todo el transporte está a pie. Una voluntad en general de estar flexible es muy importante.
