1 HISPANIC STUDIES / SPA 210 (001/002) SPANISH GRAMMAR AND SYNTAX Fall 2007 (M/W/F) Instructor: Office: Class Time: Office Hours: Ph: 257- Room: This syllabus is available on the World Wide Web: REQUIRED TEXTS. (1) *Avanzando: Gramática española y lectura 6 th Ed. (de la Vega and Salazar) with Cuaderno de ejercicios (2) *A good Spanish-English/English-Spanish dictionary * These texts must be brought to class every day. COURSE DESCRIPTION. SPA 210 is a grammar course required for the major and minor in Hispanic Studies. Students are provided a thorough review of previously learned grammar and are also exposed to aspects of Spanish grammar that may be new, all of this while practicing speaking and writing skills. Students will be evaluated according to their performance on written examinations, homework assignments, written compositions, attendance, and active participation in class as well as their performance on any other assignments deemed necessary by the instructor. Outside readings will be assigned to present Spanish grammar within authentic Spanish language texts and to allow for in-class discussions to provide background knowledge in preparation for written compositions. Students are expected to participate actively, complete readings and assignments fully, and to come to class prepared with questions concerning their out of class work. Each day is extremely full of grammar topics to be covered, some or most of which should be review, so students who need slower and/or more individualized help with certain grammar points should plan on meeting with the instructor during office hours. The course will be conducted almost exclusively in Spanish. COURSE OBJECTIVES. (1) To enhance intermediate language skills (acquired in SPA ) through a detailed focus on Spanish grammar. (2) To improve students understanding of Spanish grammar and to integrate it in their writing and speaking through compositions and in-class group work. (3) To broaden students perspectives of topics relevant in modern Spanish-speaking societies, domestically and internationally, through readings and other class activities. (4) To use writing and discussion in Spanish to explore the relationship of the course materials to students own lives and values with a view to understand the perspectives of others. COURSE DYNAMICS. The primary objective of this course is to transmit the content of the class Spanish grammar while also including some practice of the grammar via oral/aural and written activities. The class covers a lot of material and in much greater depth than previous 4-skills courses (e.g., ) so although time will be allotted for speaking and practicing the grammar in class, most of class time will be spent learning the grammar and the necessary terminology. The content of this course and the object of study is Spanish grammar. Therefore, students must study the assigned pages rather than simply read them in order to arrive at class with some degree of understanding of the grammatical concepts to be covered as well as the terms used to discuss those concepts. We will also read short articles from modern-day magazines as well as readings from the book and discuss their content in addition to analyzing certain grammar points found in the readings. GRADE BREAKDOWN. The following are the components of the final grade for this course: - Attendance and participation (10%). As mentioned, this is an in-depth and intense grammar course. While assigned exercises are designed to allow students to practice concepts learned in class, class time is meant to clarify difficult grammar points and to answer questions from the assigned pages from the textbook and the workbook. This means that active participation and regular attendance are crucial to your final grade. A grading rubric for the participation grade is attached to the on-line syllabus and a participation grade will be given to each student approximately every 3-4 weeks throughout the semester. Students are permitted 3 absences for any reason. Remember that the 3 permitted absences are intended to provide for such eventualities as illness (including trips to the university health clinic), family emergencies, etc. (see University Senate Rule for explanation). Unexcused absences, i.e. those lacking documentation and not defined by Senate Rule , beyond the 3 mentioned above will be penalized by two percentage points per absence from the final grade. Any arrivals of 25 minutes late or more will be counted as an absence. As late arrivals are disruptive every three tardies and/or early departures will count as one unexcused absence. There will be no make-ups given for quizzes, exams or other work 1

2 missed due to an unexcused absence. If you must be absent, it is your responsibility to contact a classmate and find out what was done in the class you missed and what is due in the next class. - Homework (15%). The daily reading from the textbook or the blackboard site is noted in the Para leer antes de clase column and the daily written assignments from the cuaderno, the Blackboard site, or written compositions are noted in the Para completer antes de clase column of your daily syllabus which means that they must be read and completed before coming to class that day. The grammatical exercises you complete for homework will be from the workbook (cuaderno) and will need to be completed by the days indicated and turned in every Friday. Whenever you have a workbook (cuaderno) assignment due you must correct your work using the back of the book and clearly mark errors with a different color than the one in which you completed the exercise, i.e., using blue to correct black is not different enough. This is a crucial step you must take to get full credit for your homework. All written homework assignments are graded for completion where 3 represents homework that is 100% completed and corrected in another color pen if workbook pages, 2 represents more than half completed, 1 is less than half, and 0 would correspond to no homework being turned in. Reading comprehension questions from the readings found on blackboard will need to be answered in writing before class in order to facilitate insightful discussion and are considered part of the homework assignment to be turned in. Each answer to these reading comprehension questions should be written in full sentences with a minimum of two sentences per answer. All homework from the week should be stapled together (workbook and reading comprehension questions) and will be collected on Fridays or if there is an exam or a holiday on a given Friday, the last day of instruction of that particular week. - Written exams (35%). Two written exams will be administered during the semester (20%) as well as a final exam (15%). The exams will cover material covered in the text, workbook, readings and class discussions. They will focus on grammar and topics from the readings and will include questions of different types: fill-in-the-blank, multiple choice, short answer, and short essay. - Compositions (40%). Three (3) compositions (1-1½ pages [275 (min.) 325 (max.) words], typed and double-spaced) will be collected throughout the semester. These assignments will typically entail a response to a reading and/or a class discussion. Students will rewrite the first (15% of final grade) and second (15% of final grade) composition after receiving feedback: 1 st version (40% of comp. grade), 2 nd version (60% of comp. grade). The third composition (10%) will not be rewritten and will receive one grade. Use the Tally Sheet to keep track of your most common mistakes to help you focus your efforts in learning specific grammar points. ** PLAGIARISM (SRR 6.3.1). All academic work, written or otherwise, submitted by students to their instructors or other academic supervisors, is expected to be the result of their own thought, research or self-expression. When students submit work purporting to be their own, but which in any way borrows ideas, organization, wording or anything else from another source without appropriate acknowledgement of the fact, the students are guilty of plagiarism. 2
