2 Did you know...? The Market is a great place for imaginative play including role play, imitative behaviors and creating scenarios to enact. Your young child may watch others play and may even imitate their behaviors but not directly interact with them. This is called parallel play and is appropriate behavior for your young child. In contrast, your older child may interact freely with others. Your child may join in cooperative play with peers, following along, assigning roles or directing the play scenarios. When your child plays with the peas in the table, s/he is experimenting with math concepts such as estimation, conservation and weight. S/he is also fine-tuning his/her eye-hand coordination and enjoying a wonderful sensory experience.

3 Did you know...? Your child's growing sense of independence is in overdrive in the Market. Notice how s/he sorts through the vegetables and selects those that appeal most to him/her, chooses the pathway s/he wants to follow and decides which checkout counter to approach. Your child is imitating behaviors s/he observes in adults at the grocery store and plays the role of shopper, store clerk or checkout person. This exhibits creates a language- and literacy-rich environment where groceries display print in diverse languages, play is narrated, and directional language is used by children to organize operations. The Market is an excellent place for your child to make connections to the real world. Perhaps s/he sees a grocery item you have at home, or maybe s/he remembers that you bought three bananas and two potatoes the last time you were at the store. Watch your child and see if you notice what connections s/he is making in the Market!

6 Sabía usted...? El Mercado es un lugar ideal para que los niños jueguen con su imaginación. Eso incluye juegos desempeñando varios papeles, imitando y creando distintos escenarios. Sus niños pequeños podrán ver a otros niños jugar y tal vez hasta imiten sus comportamientos, pero sin interactuar directamente con ellos. A esto se le llama juego paralelo y es un comportamiento apropiado para los niños pequeños. Por otro lado, sus niños mayores podrán interactuar libremente con otros y participar con sus compañeros en un juego colectivo, siguiendo, asignando papeles o dirigiendo los escenarios del juego. Cuando sus hijos juegan con los chícharos en la mesa, están experimentando con conceptos matemáticos, como cálculo, conservación y peso. También están ajustando su coordinación entre ojos y manos y disfrutando una maravillosa experiencia sensorial.

Observe cómo revisan los vegetales y seleccionan aquellos que les llaman más la atención, cómo eligen el pasillo por el que desean pasar, y cómo deciden por qué caja registradora van a pasar. Su hijo o hija están imitando comportamientos que han observado en los adultos que van al supermercado, y juegan el papel de comprador, empleado o cajero. Esta exhibición crea un entorno rico en lenguaje y alfabetismo, en el cual los rótulos para comestibles y productos se describen en diversos idiomas, el juego es narrado, y los niños usan lenguaje direccional para organizar sus operaciones. El Mercado es un sitio ideal para que sus hijos hagan conexiones con el mundo real. Tal vez reconocerán productos que usted tiene en casa, o quizás recordarán que la última vez que fueron al supermercado usted compró tres plátanos y dos papas.
