Welcome everyone. Thank you so much for being here today. I am glad you are here. I would like to start by taking a moment to introduce myself and let you know my connection to Dual Language Immersion programming in the Madison Metropolitan School District. Today we will be following the PowerPoint presentation up on the screen. Each slide will have the same information in both Spanish, on the top and English, on the bottom. 2
Muy bien Now we would like to learn a little bit about you. Raise your hand if you have a child entering 5 year-old kindergarten in the fall. 3
Great, typically most children start Dual Language Immersion programming in 5K. Raise your hand if you have a child entering 1 st grade in the fall. Ok, we also have some students who start Dual Language Immersion programming in 1 st grade. Raise your hand if your child speaks English only and you wish for him/her to learn to speak Spanish. Raise your hand if your child speaks Spanish and you wish for him/her to learn English and Spanish Raise your hand if your child speaks more than one language Ok, great If you have not yet raised your hand, please do so now. What brings you here today? Do you have a child attending or that will attend our district? What grade are they entering? Great 3
Next, let s look at our agenda. Today we will talk about What is Dual Language Immersion (DLI)? 4
Our school district uses a lot of acronyms. DLI is the acronym for Dual Language Immersion. We will use that a lot today during this presentation. We will talk about how DLI programming in our school district works. There are different models of dual language immersion programming. Today we will talk about the model that our school district uses and how it works. We will talk about what to think about if you are considering dual language immersion for your child and how to apply to the program. You must apply if you are interested. We will talk about where the programs are located. And finally, we will end by briefly mentioning other program options that exist so that you know all of your options before making a decision. 4
What is Dual Language Immersion? It is an academic program that takes place during the regular school day. So, when you think about a school building, there are classrooms made up of different grade levels with teachers instructing students in English. In schools with DLI programs, there are classrooms with teachers who instruct students in both Spanish and English. Students in DLI learn the same content as students in English-only classrooms. So, for example, if a kindergarten class is learning about patterns, kindergarten students in DLI will also be learning about patterns, but they will be instructed in Spanish. DLI provides academic grade-level instruction in Spanish and English. This is how the program gets its name dual language because students are being taught in two languages. So, as we move through the presentation today, what you are thinking about as a parent, is deciding if you want your child to be instructed in English only or in both Spanish and English. Dual Language Immersion is not just learning to have a conversation in Spanish or English. It s important to understand that it s an academic program. That means, when students learn academic language (like graph, species, electron, etc.) they are learning vocabulary and concepts in two languages. This is more intensive than simply learning to have basic conversations in another language. With that said, it is important to understand the goals of the program. 5
Bilingualism is the ability to speak and understand two languages. 6
Biliteracy is the ability to read and write in two languages. This means not just being able to understand or speak Spanish and English informally at home, but being prepared to read and write, study math, social studies and science at grade level in both languages. Multicultural Skills: All of the lessons, books, and activities used in the DLI program support the goals of the program. They promote understanding and honoring various cultures, practices and perspectives. DLI has a focus on cultural differences and similarities, looking at our world and the people in it. DLI prepares students to be culturally sensitive global citizens who are excited to travel, explore the world and thrive in multiple environments. DLI students will be taught and expected to learn everything that all students in their grade level are learning. 6
The Common Core State Standards tell us what to teach. DLI students learn the same curriculum as students in English-only classrooms with the same expectations. 7
We teach using themes. For example, one theme is community, where in every subject reading, writing, science, and social studies students are learning about ideas related to community. This gives students real life context and helps them to build on what they know, adding on a little more every day. We do not teach everything in both languages. We teach each subject in one language. Research tells us that once we learn something in one language, we own that idea no matter what language we are thinking in. For example, if we teach students how to craft a sentence in Spanish, later we guide them on how crafting a sentence in English is different, but they do not need to re-learn the whole concept of creating a sentence. 7
In our district, 1 in every 5 students is an English Language Learner, so as a district we 8
already have a lot of diversity. The DLI classroom will have an even higher concentration of English Language Learners, as roughly half of the students will have Spanish in their background and homes. And additionally, students of other language backgrounds (Chinese, Arabic, etc.) may also participate in DLI. DLI classrooms in our district are made up of roughly half Spanish-speakers and half Englishspeakers. In our program, half of the students model Spanish language use, while learning English and half of the students model English language use, while learning Spanish. This makes all of our children language models and language learners. This program model values all students language backgrounds and encourages an exchange between all students. Hispanic students learn English while learning their heritage language. The program ensures that all students heritage language and culture are celebrated, and celebrated together with a diverse group of students. 8
We ve talked about what instruction looks like and who the students are in the DLI classroom. Now we want to talk about the language of instruction. In kindergarten, students are instructed 90% of the time in Spanish and 10% of the time in English. With each year, they are taught more and more in English. This is important for all parents to understand. 90% of the day in kindergarten will be taught in Spanish. So, for Spanish-speaking families, this means your child will be slowly eased into using more and more English each year, but to begin with, they will not be learning a lot in English like their peers in English-only classrooms. And English-speaking families should expect the challenge for their child that they will be hearing Spanish 90% of their school day. There is a heavy focus on Spanish in the early years to emphasize the values of the program and to balance the amount of English students will be hearing, seeing, and using in the community of Madison. DLI teachers are not only certified teachers, but they also have an additional bilingual certification and have fluency in both languages. The teacher will help students make connections between the two languages and every day, a portion of the day will be devoted specifically to English Language Development. Specials classes are also taught in English. 9
Here you can see a visual of the language of instruction throughout elementary school. It is important for parents of both Spanish and English-speakers to understand that the first few years are really heavily taught in Spanish. Your child will spend the majority of their school day hearing, speaking, reading, and writing in Spanish. Ultimately, in fourth grade, students reach a 50:50 ratio where half of the subjects are taught in each language. 10
In middle school, the language of instruction continues to be 50% in Spanish and 50% in English. Students have Spanish Language Arts and Science in Spanish. Students have English Language Arts and Math in English. Social Studies are split between both languages, with some units being taught in each language. 11
At high school, DLI students are able to continue coursework in both languages. Students may elect to take courses in Spanish Language and Social Studies. We hope to continue to develop more course offerings as DLI continues to grow. 12
El 94% de los programas DLI en EEUU son español/inglés DLI is not a new program and it s becoming more common across the United States. The first DLI program in the USA was in Miami in There are more than 300 programs nationwide and 94% of the DLI programs in the USA are Spanish/English. 13
Nos estamos preparando para que entren a la Escuela Intermedia Cherokee en el ciclo escolar The first DLI program in our school district was opened in 2004 at NuestroMundo. Nuestro Mundo sfirst group of students who began in kindergarten in 2004 is now continuing DLI programming at La FolletteHigh School. They are currently in 9 th grade. Our next furthest developed DLI program is at Leopold Elementary, opening in The first group of students is currently in fourth grade. We are preparing for them to enter middle school at Cherokee in
All students in DLI do have a path through 12 th grade. Each year, a grade level is added to each pathway. This slide shows our district s Dual Language Immersion program map. The column on the left is our elementary schools, the column in the middle is middle school, and column on the right is high school. This chart shows the pathway for students at each school. For example, students in DLI at Leopold will continue in DLI at Cherokee Middle School and later West High School. The schools with a solid line around them are programs that currently 15
exist and the schools with a dotted line around them are future Dual Language Immersion schools. 15
Ideally, if you enroll your child in DLI, they would continue with DLI through 12 th grade. Are you willing to commit to a minimum of six years to the program with the understanding that acquiring a second language is a long term commitment? Both Spanish and English-speaking students will not begin to fully reap the benefits of the program until the upper elementary grade levels. Additionally, it would be very difficult for your child, after being instructed and learning in Spanish every day, to be thrust into an English-speaking only classroom. Do you value multiple cultures? The people, art, history, customs, and perspectives? Do you value not only being able to speak a second language, but being able to speak, comprehend, read, write and have high levels of vocabulary in a second language? Are you willing to be involved with your child s learning and with school activities? It is important for all parents, in all programs, to be involved with their child s education. Likewise, it is important for you to be involved with your child s education if you choose to participate in Dual Language Immersion. There may be some additional engagement on your part, to communicate with your child s teacher and to support your child at home. This may include checking out books in both Spanish and English from the library so that your child has access to books in both languages to read at home. It may include participating in Parent Nights at your school. It may include working with your child s teacher to know how to support them with their homework. 16
Most importantly, you must apply for the DLI program. The program is optional and completely filled by families who are interested in the program for their child. Therefore, we need all families interested to submit an application. 17
Applications are available here tonight, are in school offices, and are online at the website listed here: Applications will be collected until Friday, May 2 and then a lottery is run to fill the programs. What this means is that all applicants are selected at random for the program. It is not first come, first serve. Students are selected randomly, but we do ensure that roughly half are Spanish-speakers and half are English-speakers. Because students are selected by lottery, this means that not all students who apply are admitted. We typically have more families interested in this program that there are classrooms available. When this happens, we do form waitlists. 17
We will briefly mention the other program options Let s begin with the options for students who speak a language in addition to or other than English 18
English as a Second Language is available to any student who is developing his or her English language proficiency and has had significant exposure to a language other than English. So, if you recall, we have about 1 in 5 students in our school district who would qualify for these supports. 19
English as a Second Language supports are offered within the classroom, as part of the regular instruction. It is not a separate program in which students participate. Many years ago, students were taken out of the classroom and instructed away from their classroom peers. This is no longer the case. There has been a lot of progress nationwide in understanding the best ways to support students and that includes having the support teachers working closely alongside the classroom teacher. Support teachers have certification in either English as a Second Language or bilingual education. English as a Second Language is available in all of our schools. 19
This program option is for Spanish-speaking families only. 100% of the students who participate in DBE are Spanish-speakers. The program model closely mirrors the DLI program model, for example, the language of instruction begins at 90% in Spanish, moving the same way to 50:50 by fourth grade. The goals of this program are the same as Dual Language Immersion: biliteracy, bilingualism, multicultural skills, and grade level content. The significant difference is the student make-up. 20
The final program option is World Language. Students currently have access to world 21
language learning beginning in 7 th grade. There are currently eight languages taught in the district. The language a student has access to varies by school. This is the only other language program option for native English-speakers. We used to use the term foreign language to refer to these courses. The term World Language is now used, to represent the fact that the languages taught in our schools are languages of our local community. The district s Strategic Framework has a priority area dedicated to increasing access to world language learning at all grade levels. For now, many elementary schools have non-mmsd after school language enrichment programs provided through the Wisconsin Youth Company. Questions about MMSD world language learning can be directed to JenniZupan, district world language instructional resource teacher. 21
