3 El verbo IR The verb IR (to go) is one of the most common Spanish verbs. Like many other common verbs, the verb IR is completely irregular in the present tense. The forms of the verb IR are: IR (to go) Yo voy I go Nosotros/as vamos we go Tú vas you go Vosotros/as vais you go (pl) Ella va he/she goes Usted you go (form.) Ellas van they go Ustedes you go (pl. form.) It is common to use the verb IR with the preposition A (to) to express where someone is going. Yo voy al restaurante. I m going to the restaurant. Note that when the preposition a appears before the article el, they combine to form the contraction al. This does NOT occur with any other article, as seen below. Nosotros vamos a la piscina. We re going to the pool. The verb IR is also used to form one of the future tenses in Spanish. Use the formula IR + A + INFINITIVE to express what someone is going to do in the future. El equipo va a ganar el partido. The team is going to win the game. Los niños van a nadar el sábado. The children are going to swim on Saturday. Juan Luis va a tomar el sol. Juan Luis is going to sunbathe.
4 Stem-Changing Verbs When a verb has a stem change, it means that the vowel in the middle of the verb changes when it is put into its different forms. There are 3 types of stem changes in Spanish: o E I o E IE o O UE Stem changing verbs are commonly called boot verbs because you only stem change the forms inside the boot. The nosotros and vosotros forms NEVER stem change. Even when a verb has a stem change, you still MUST drop the AR, -ER or IR and add the appropriate verb ending to agree with the subject. Make sure you use the correct endings based on what kind of verb it is (-AR, -ER, or IR)!!! Below are examples of each of the 3 stem changes. E IE QUERER (to want/to love) O UE VOLVER (to return/go back) Yo quiero Nosotros queremos Yo vuelvo Nosotros volvemos Tú quieres Vosotros queréis Tú vuelves Vosotros volvéis Ella quiere Ud. Ellas Uds. quieren Ella vuelve Ud. Ellas Uds. vuelven E I PEDIR (to ask for/request/order) Yo pido Tú pides Ella pide Ud. Nosotros pedimos Vosotros pedís Ellas Uds. piden Special Note The verb JUGAR (to play) also has a stem change. The verb JUGAR changes U-UE. It is the only verb in Spanish with this type of change. The forms of JUGAR are: Yo juego Nosotros jugamos Tú juegas /Ella/Ud. juega Vosotros jugáis /Ellas/Uds. juegan There are numerous stem-changing verbs in Spanish. There is no special trick for remembering which verbs stem change and how. YOU MUST MEMORIZE IT! Provided below are several other common stem-changing verbs in Spanish, along with example sentences. E IE cerrar..to close comenzar...to start/begin empezar..to start/begin entender..to understand tener.to have pensar.to think perder to lose preferir...to prefer querer to want/love venir...to come
5 La película empieza a las nueve. The movie starts at 9:00. Ana pierde el juego. Ana is losing the game. Mis amigos vienen a mi fiesta. My friends are coming to my party. O UE almorzar to eat lunch contar.to count/to tell dormir to sleep encontrar to find mostrar.to show poder.can/to be able recordar.to remember volver.to return/go back Yo almuerzo en la cafetería. I eat lunch in the cafeteria. Mateo duerme en el sofá. Mateo sleeps on the sofa. Sebastián muestra las fotos a Nina. Sebastián shows the pictures to Nina. E I conseguir..to get/obtain decir..to say/tell seguir.to follow pedir..to request/ask for/order repetir.to repeat
6 Carlos y yo pedimos la sopa. Carlos and I order soup. La profesora repite las instrucciones. The teacher repeats the instructions. Leticia consigue la comida en el supermercado. Leticia gets the food at the supermarket. Verbs with Irregular YO Forms Many verbs in Spanish have irregular yo forms. Many of these verbs are referred to as GO verbs, because the yo form ends in -go. -GO Verbs hacer (to do/make)..yo hago poner (to put/place).yo pongo salir (to leave/go out).yo salgo suponer (to suppose)..yo supongo traer (to bring) yo traigo tener (to have).yo tengo decir (to say/tell)..yo digo conseguir (to get/obtain) yo consigo seguir (to follow).yo sigo oír (to hear)..yo oigo* While GO verbs are quite common, there are also other verbs with irregular yo forms, as seen below. Additional Irregular yo Forms saber (to know) yo sé ver (to see) yo veo *The verb OÍR not only has an irregular yo form, but also has a spelling change in many of its other forms. The forms of OÍR are: yo oigo -- tú oyes -- él/ella/usted oye -- nosotros oímos -- vosotros oís -- ellos/ellas/ustedes oyen
