DROP OFF reusable items in good condition or BROWSE the yard and see if anything catches your eye. The center has building materials (doors, windows, cabinets, sinks, tubs, toilets, pipes, lumber, nuts/bolts, spas, tools), furniture (such as chairs, bookshelves, lamps, tables), lawn & garden items (lawn mowers, rototillers, pots, grape stakes) AND MORE! All items dropped off for reuse are subject to approval. You won t find cheaper prices anywhere! REDuce & Reuse Do you or your business want to get rid of an item that s in good condition? You can start to reduce waste TODAY by using the programs listed here. NapaMax is a free online resource where you can find or discard items. It demonstrates the idea that one person s trash is another s treasure. Simply log into the NapaMax website and create a wanted or available listing. You can find everything from the kitchen sink to landscape materials to furniture. By avoiding sending items to the landfill, resources and energy are conserved. Plastic Bags: Clean plastic bags can be recycled at participating grocery stores, including: Albertsons, Nob Hill, Raley's, Safeway, WalMart, & Vallerga's. Plastic bags litter the environment, use up valuable resources and fill up landfills. Please strongly consider using reusable cloth bags (the best option) or recyclable paper bags when you shop. Special events provide a great opportunity to recycle ~ do you wonder why it is missing at so many events? The City & County of Napa are committed to increasing recycling at Napa events and helping you make it work. When you call your service provider before the event, they will help you select the right recycling and trash containers for your needs and provide guidelines for successful event recycling. State and County policies require recycling at large events. Plus recycling will save you money because there is no charge for recycling at large events (south county and north county free services vary) while there is always a charge for trash collection. When your cart is full, set it out by 6am on your service day, at least 2 feet away from other carts or objects, lid opening facing the curb. Yardwaste consists of grass clippings, branches & leaves. Absolutely NO rocks, dirt or animal waste will be accepted. 9 Clothes Washer Rebate Programs City of Napa High-efficiency residential clothes washers use as little as 15 gallons of water per load and save up to 70% in energy costs. As an incentive to purchase these models, City of Napa water customers can receive up to $100 back. Napa County retailers have application forms and lists of eligible washers. Forms are also available in the Public Works Department - Water Conservation section of the City website: www. cityofnapa.org. Call for more details. Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) You can receive a rebate from PG&E for some Energy Star rated clothes washers. To qualify, your site must have electricity or natural gas supplied by PG&E. For current program information, consult your retailer or visit: CONSUMER RECYCLER M A N U FA C T U R E R City of American Canyon Toilet Retrofit Program The City of American Canyon will reimburse up to $100 for every qualifying standard toilet removed and replaced with an ultra-low flush toilet. Call the Public Works Department at for more details. Cash Rebates for Old Refrigerators Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) electric customers may qualify for a rebate by recycling old refrigerators and freezers. Your units must be at least cubic feet each, empty and working. There is a limit of two units per household per year. The service and pick-up is free. Qualifying customers may receive a rebate in 6-8 weeks for each unit. Funding is limited. 12 Universal Waste (U-waste) All universal waste materials are banned from the trash. If not disposed of properly, these items will release toxic substances that find their way into our air, water and eventually into the food we eat. End-of-Life Recycling These local facilities will take your u-waste items; call ahead for conditions that may apply. What is Universal Waste? Universal waste or u-waste are common items that have been traditionally thrown in the trash. They are a type of hazardous waste. Materials that cannot go into the trash include: All alkaline & rechargeable batteries; lead-acid batteries (car) Items containing mercury: thermostats, thermometers, switches (e.g. pilot light sensors, clothes irons, blood pressure gauge, novelties such as maze games & talking greeting cards) Fluorescent lamps & tubes, metal halide lamps, sodium vapor lamps Video display devices: TVs, monitors, laptops Electronic devices (with a digital component): computers, printers, PDAs, cell phones, telephones, radios, stereos, microwave ovens Why is Universal Waste a Problem? Chemicals and toxic substances released from these materials can contaminate our environment and pose a risk to health & wildlife. Electronics waste (E-waste) is responsible for 70% of all heavy metals found in U.S. landfills (lead, mercury, cadmium, copper, etc.). A TV or computer monitor contains 7 lbs of lead! Mercury and other substances released into the air and water are toxic to wildlife & humans. Mercury is easily absorbed through the lungs and skin. The mercury from one fluorescent bulb can ruin 6,000 gallons of drinking water.
