2 February 22, 2015 Pastor s Notes Fr. Damien J. Cook Altar Server Awards I want to congratulate our 2015 parish winners of the coveted Serra Altar Server Awards. This year was particularly hard because we have so many terrific servers, but the following boys were selected for their longevity to serving, generous and cooperative attitudes, dependability, and leadership. Please congratulate these young men when you see them. They will receive their awards here at St. Peter during a special Mass on Thursday, March 5 th at 7 p.m. Archbishop Lucas will be the celebrant and all are invited to attend. A reception will follow. Brendan Vankat John Murphy Joseph Methe Juan Mosqueda Luis Bustamante Peyton Hottovy Pilgrimage to the Holy Land Fr. Cook, pastor of St. Peter Parish in Omaha, and Fr. Zoucha, pastor of Divine Mercy Parish in Schuyler, will be the spiritual directors for a pilgrimage to the Holy Land from Omaha leaving on Thursday, Oct. 29, 2015, and returning on Sunday, Nov. 8, Fr. Cook will be hosting an informal meeting for those interested in the trip in the St. Peter McMahon Hall (723 S. 27 th St., Omaha) on Saturday, March 7, at 6 p.m. View photos of the Holy Land, learn why a pilgrimage to the Holy Land is the greatest of all pilgrimages, and taste some of the delicious, healthy foods from that part of the world. Cook is away on his annual priests skiing vacation from February 22 nd through February 28 th. Please pray that he doesn t break any limbs. I Sunday of Lent Omaha Altar Boys Camp Fr. Cook encourages all of the St. Peter altar boys eligible to sign up for the first ever Archdiocese of Omaha Catholic summer camp for boys called Virtus et Veritas from July 26th through August 1st this summer. Camp Virtus et Veritas is for boys entering 6th grade through 9 th grade with leadership roles available for boys entering 10th through 12th grades in the fall. This weeklong camp will be held at Camp Kateri Tekakwitha in McCool Junction, Nebraska. The camp is full of fun, personal growth, and spiritual development. Register online at youth-ministry/virtus-et-veritas/youth-registration/ or call Thursday Confessions As part of The Light is On campaign to renew participation in the beautiful sacrament of Reconciliation, we will offer Confession at St. Peter s from 5:30 p.m. until 7 p.m. in the church on all of the Thursdays in Lent EXCEPT March 19 th which is the consecration and installation of Bishop-Elect Hanefeldt in Grand Island. Please take advantage of the gift of Jesus mercy at these special times. The side entrances to the church will be open; all other doors will be locked for security reasons. Meatless Fridays All Catholics 14 years of age and older are required to give up meat every Friday in Lent as a sacrificial penance. Stations of the Cross Walk with Jesus through the traditional Stations of the Cross every Friday in Lent. At 5:30 p.m. will be the Stations of the Cross and Benediction in English and Latin. At 7 p.m. will be the Stations of the Cross (Via Crucis) in Spanish. Baby Bottle Drive We have the opportunity to support Essential Pregnancy Services of Bellevue in their ministry of Empowering women to embrace life for their unborn babies. A major source of EPS s financial support is their Baby Bottle Campaign. This Lent you can help them by taking a baby bottle and filling it with prayer pledges, coins, bills or a check. Bottles are located at each of the entrances to the church. Please return them to St. Peter s Church on the weekends of March 21 st or March 28 th. 4 February September 22, 28, Black & Indian Mission Collection We will take up the second collection to benefit the black and Indian missions on Feb. 21 and 22. Please be generous. Seraphic Sister Collection We will take up one of our two annual second collections to benefit our Seraphic Sisters of the Eucharist on Feb. 28 th & March 1 st. Sr. Clara and Sr. Lourdes are outstanding examples of consecrated life and have dedicated their lives to Jesus and the service of His Church. They are so helpful here at St. Peter and serve as wonderful role models for our girls in their vocational discernment. Help these religious who have taken vows of poverty and depend upon our good will and generosity. February Monthly Adult Luncheon All adult parishioners and friends of St. Peter Parish are invited to the Feb. 25 th luncheon. This month we will meet in St. Cecilia Cathedral Parish Center for lunch at 12 noon. Guest speaker Kay Buhrman, of the Family Life Office will speak on Grief and Bereavement. The Legion member works for the Holy Spirit, in and through Mary, to serve Christ and to continue His mission on earth. Membership consists of active members, who attend meetings and auxiliary members, who do not. The Legion of Mary meets every Wednesday evening at 7:15 p.m. in O Brien Hall; all are welcome. Birthday February 25 th is our housekeeper Renata s birthday. Please pray for her and wish her well. Ballroom Dance St. Peter s Knights of Columbus will sponsor a ballroom dance on Saturday evening, Feb. 28 th, 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. in the St. Peter School Gym. Cover $7 (11 & up). $40 cap per family. Includes taco bar (3 tacos), cheese & chips, lemonade. Additional tacos $1 each. Casual attire. Catechism Reminder: 2nd Year Confirmation Students All children in their second year of preparation for Confirmation in St. Peter s Catechism program, do not attend classes on this Wednesday evening, but DO attend on Saturdays, from 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 noon, in McMahon Hall, for special classes with Fr. Cook. The special classes will be held every Saturday from February 14 through March 28. Parish Pastoral Council Members of the St. Peter Pastoral Council are asked to attend their next meeting on Tuesday, March 3 rd at 7:15 p.m. in the O Brien Hall. They will discuss Part 1 of the book assigned for their reading. Toy Raffle The Altar Society will be having a toy raffle of several vintage Fisher-Price toys after the 9:30 a.m. Sunday Masses from Feb. 22-March 8 in McMahon Hall. Tickets are 4/$1 or 25 cents apiece. The proceeds will be going to the St Peter Trivia Night. Winners need not be present to win. Men s Silent Retreat Father Scott Traynor, JCL, is directing an Ignatian silent retreat for men on Feb. 26-March 1, at the Broom Tree Retreat Center. Fr. Colecta Hermanas Seráficas Tomaremos una de dos de nuestras segundas colectas anuales para beneficio de nuestras Hermanas Seráficas de la Eucaristía el 28 de feb. y el de marzo. Sor Clara y Sor Lourdes son ejemplos extraordinarios de la vida consagrada y han dedicado sus vidas a Jesús y al servicio de Su Iglesia. Ayuden a estas religiosas quienes han tomado votos de pobreza y las cuales dependen de nuestra buena voluntad y bondad. Legión de María La Legión de María está centrada en Cristo. Los miembros de la Legión trabajan para el Espíritu Santo, en y por medio de María, para server a Cristo y para continuar Su misión sobre la tierra. La membrecía consiste de miembros actives, quienes asisten a reuniones y miembros auxiliares, quienes no asisten a la reuniones. La Legión se reúne todos los miércoles por la tarde a las 7:15 p.m. en el Salón O Brien; todos son bienvenidos. Consejo Pastoral Parroquial Se le pide su asistencia a todo miembro del Consejo Pastoral de San Pedro a la siguiente reunión el martes, 3 de marzo a las 7:15 p.m. en el salón O Brien. Escuela de Evangelización Santa Ana Les hacemos la invitación a todas las personas, que hagan vivido el Curso Felipe completo, a vivir el próximo Curso Isaías este 6, 7 y 8 de Marzo. El Curso Isaías es un Curso que nos dará una introducción básica a la Palabra de Dios (La Biblia). Todos necesitamos saber manejar e interpretar la Palabra de Dios. Hora Santa de Niños Niños de la parroquia son invitados a asistir a la siguiente Hora Santa para Niños el viernes, 27 de febrero, de 10 a.m.-11 a.m. en la iglesia. Rifa de Juguetes La Sociedad del Altar tendrá una rifa de juguetes de varios juguetes de Fisher-Price después de las Misas dominicales de las 9:30 a.m. del 11 de feb. al 8 de marzo en el Salón McMahon. Los boletos son de 4/ $1 o 0.25 centavo por boleto. Las ganancias se aplicaran a la Noche de Trivialidades de San Pedro. Los ganadores no necesitan estar presentes. Despensa de San Pedro Las necesidades actuales están conservas de frutas y verduras, sopas, comidas en caja (es decir por ejemplo, Tuna Helper Ayudante de atún o pasta), y las servilletas de papel. Muchas Gracias y Dios los bendiga XVIII XXVI Sunday of I Sunday Ordinary of Time Lent Sacramental Preparation and Devotions Baptism and Godparent Requirements Parents of children who are six years of age or younger and in need of Baptism must be registered, active parishioners of St. Peter for at least two months. Godparents take on serious obligations when they sponsor a person for Baptism and they should be virtuous and faithful Catholics. Godparents must be 16 years old or more, fully initiated, practicing Catholics; if married, godparents must be married in the Catholic Church. Baptisms may be scheduled only after the parents and godparents have completed the requisite classes and the parish office receives a letter from the parish at which the godparents belong stating that the godparents are in good standing with the Catholic Church and are eligible to be sponsors. Parents and sponsors must attend a Baptismal class before the Baptism. Classes in English usually are offered on the fourth Sundays of March, June, September and December from 3:00-5:00 p.m. Pre-registration is required. Baptisms in English are usually offered on the second Sunday of the month at 2:30 p.m. and on the fourth Saturday of the month at 9:00 a.m. For more information, please call the parish office at , ext 100. Catechism Sacramental Preparation for Children The catechism school year goes from September through May of each year. Registrations began in May for the next school year. Classes are held on Saturdays from 10:30 a.m. to 12 noon, or Wednesdays from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. If the child is Baptized, a Baptism certificate must be given to the parish office. Children should be registered and attend classes for at least two years before receiving sacraments. 7 22 de febrero de 2015 I Domingo de Cuaresma Preparación Sacramental y Devociones Requisitos para Bautismo y Padrinos El Cursillo Pre-Bautismal para Padres y Padrinos es requerido para Bautismos. El cursillo es valido por tres años. Padres de niños que serán Bautizados deberán de registrarse, feligreses registrados y activos de la Parroquia de San Pedro por lo menos de dos meses. Los padrinos deberán de ser iniciados completamente, practicando el Catolicismo, asisten en Misa por lo menos de los domingos y días de guardar, y si están casados, deberán ser casados por la Iglesia Católica, y tienen 16 años o más. Los padrinos toman sobre sí unas obligaciones muy serias cuando apadrinan una persona para el bautismo y deben ser virtuosos y fieles católicos. Les queremos animar a seleccionar muy cuidadosamente los padrinos. Podrán fijar y pedir el día para los bautismos solamente después de que los papás y los padrinos hayan completado tres clases de requisito y después de que la oficina de la parroquia haya recibido de los padrinos una carta de la parroquia a donde pertenecen los padrinos, en la cual constatan que ellos están en el buen favor de la Iglesia Católica y que son aprobados para ser padrinos.
