2 Gramática Repaso A Presente del verbo ser Review the forms of the irregular verb ser. Ser Yo soy Nosotros(as) somos Tú eres Vosotros(as) sois Él, ella, Ud. es Ellos, ellas, Uds. son Sustantivos, artículos y adjetivos 1. Spanish nouns are either masculine or feminine. Most nouns ending in o are masculine and most nouns ending in a are feminine. Review the forms of the irregular verb tener. Tener las clases difíciles Yo tengo Nosotros(as) tenemos Tú tienes Vosotros(as) tenéis Él, ella, Ud. tiene Ellos, ellas, Uds. tienen 2. You use tener to express age Cuántos años tienes? 3. Note that the expression tener que followed by an infinitive means to have to. Tenemos que estudiar y aprender mucho. Adjetivos posesivos 1. Review the forms of the possessive adjectives me, tu, and su. These adjectives have only two forms. Dan una fiesta tu hermana y tus primos? Sí, mi hermana y mis primos dan una fiesta. Todos sus amigos van a recibir una invitación a su fiesta. 2. The possessive adjective nuestro has four forms. Nuestro primo, nuestra tíua, nuestras sobrinas, y nuestros abuelos viven todos en Madrid.

Note that the er and ir verbs have the same endings except nosotros(as) and vosotros(as). Comemos Vivimos Coméis Vivís 3. Remember, to make a sentence negative, you put no before the verb. No habla francés No vivimos en Francia 4. Remember to use tú when talking to a friend, family member, or person your own age. Use usted when speaking to an adult, a person you do not know well, or someone to whom you wish to show respect. You use ustedes when talking to two or more people. Tú estudias español, Roberto? Y usted, Señora? Usted tanbién estudia español? Ustedes viven aquí, no? Los verbos ir, dar, estar 1. Note that the verbs ir, dar, and estar are the same as regular ar verbs in all forms except yo. ir dar estar Yo voy doy estoy Tú vas das estás Él, ella, ud. va dan está Nosotros(as) vamos damos estamos Vosotros(as) vais dais estáis Ellos, ellas, Uds. van dan están 2. The preposition a often follows the verb ir. Remember that a contracts with el to form one word al. Voy al café. No voy a la tienda. 3. Remember you can use ir a + infinitive to express a future idea. Voy a tomar el bus

6 Gramática Repaso C Ser y estar 1. The verbs ser and estar both mean to be. Ser is used to tell where someone or something is from. It is also used to describe an inherent trair or characteristic. Roberto es de Miami. Él es inteligente y guapo. 2. Estar is used to tell where someone or something is located. It is also used to describe a temporary state or condition. Roberto es de Miami pero ahora está en Madrid. Madrid está en España. Roberto está muy contento en Madrid. Pronombres de complemento indirecto 1. An indirect object is the indirect receiver of the action of a verb. El médico me da la receta. da la receta. Yo le doy la receta a; farmecéutico. 2. Review the indirect object pronouns. me nos te os le les 3. Since le and les can refer to different people they are often clarified with a prepositional phrase. a él a ellos Le hablo a ella Les hablo a ellas a usted a ustedes

The verbs interesar and aburrrir function the same in Spanish and English. Te aburre el arte? Te aburren los deportes? No, los deportes me interesan. Does art bore you? Do sports bore you? No, sports interest me. 2. The verb gustar functions the same as interesar and aburrir. Gustar conveys the meaning to like, but it actually mean to be pleasing to. Te gusta el béisbol? Sí, me gusta mucho. Te gustan los deportes? Sí, me gustan.
9 Repaso E: De compras Objetivos In this chapter you will review: Vocabulary related to shopping for food and clothing The verbs saber and conocer Comparatives and superlatives Quick Start pg R38 1. 10 Gramática Repaso E: Saber y conocer 1. The verbs saber and conocer both mean to know. Like many Spanish verbs they have an irregular yo form in the present tense. All other forms are regular. saber conocer Yo sé conozco Tú sabes conoces Él, ella, ud. sabe conoce Nosotros(as) sabemos conocemos Vosotros(as) sabéis conocéis Ellos, ellas, Uds. saben conocen 2. The verb saber means to know a fact or to have information about something. It also means to know how to do something. Yo sé donde está el mercado. No sabemos a qué hora sale el vuelo. Ellos saben regatear. 3. The verb conocer means to know in the sense of to be acquainted with. It is used to talk about people or complex or abstract concepts rather than simple facts. Yo conozco a Luis. Ella conoce a su hermano. Los alumnos conocen bien la literatura mexicana. Comparativo y superlativo 1. To form the comparative in Spanish you put más or menos before the adjective or adverb and que after it. Ellas es más (menos) ambiciosa que su hermana. Ella es más (menos) ambiciosa que yo y la verdad es que ella sabe más (menos) que nadie. Note that after que you use subject pronouns (yo, tú, etc.) or nadie. 2. You form the superlative by using the appropriate definite article plus más or menos and the adjective or adverb. The preposition de follows the superlative. Es el joven más (menos) inteligente del grupo. Es el más (menos) inteligente del grupo. 3. Study the following irregular comparative and superlative forms. Comparative Superlative bueno mejor el/la mejor los/las mejores malo peor el/la peor los/las peores bien mejor mal peor Esta chaqueta te queda mejor que las otras. Elena es la mejor alumna de la clase. 1. The adjectives mayor and menor most often refer to age. Yo soy menor que mi hermana. Yo soy el/la menor de la familia. Mi abuelo es el mayor.

The forms of the verbs ir and ser are the same in the preterite. The meaning is made clear by the context of the sentence. ir, ser Yo fui Nosotros(as) fuimos Tú fuiste Vosotros(as) fuisteis Él, ella, Ud. fue Ellos, ellas, Uds. Fueron 3. The preterite is used to express an event or action that began and ended at a definite time in the past. Ellos pasaron el verano pasado en México. Fueron a Acapulco. 4. Note the forms of the verbs ver and dar. Ver vi viste vio vimos visteis vieron Dar doy das da dimos disteis dieron Los pronombres de complemento 1. The object pronouns me, te, and nos can be either direct or indirect objects. Note that the object pronoun comes before the conjugated verb. Direct Indirect Él me miró. Él me habló por teléfono. Te invitó Carlos? Te dio una invitación? Ella nos vio. Mónica nos envío algo. 2. Los, los, la, and las function as direct objects only. They can replace either persons or things. Pablo compró el boleto Pablo lo compró Pablo compró los boletos Pablo los compró Teresa compró la raqueta Teresa la compró Teresa compró las raquetas Teresa las compró Yo vi a los muchachos Yo los vi 3. Le and les function as indirect objects only. Yo le escribí un correo electrónico (a él, a ella, a usted) Yo les escribí (a ellos, a ellas, a ustedes)
