1 School starts August 3! July / August 2009 Volume 2 Number 1 A NEWSLETTER FOR THE PARENTS OF THE GLENDALE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL DISTRICT GESD students show significant gains in AIMS test scores It s time to celebrate. Glendale Elementary School District (GESD) AIMS scores increased in every grade level by as many as eight percentage points, representing the second consecutive year of significant gains for the 13,500-student district. The results of the AIMS test show increases in reading, mathematics and writing across GESD, in some cases by as much as eight percentage points, said Ed Sloat, director of research, planning and assessment. Just as important, our schools showed an across the board decline in the proportion of students who scored in the Falls Far Below (FFB) category. Passing rates in reading increased in 67 percent of all GESD grades and schools. All reading school scores were above 55 percent, and at every grade level the passing rates are NON PROFIT ORG USPOSTAGE PAID GLENDALE, AZ PERMIT # 183 Glendale Elementary School District 7301 N. 59th Ave. Glendale, AZ higher than at any time in the last three years. The highest scores were in the sixth grade, where 85 percent of District schools experienced increased passing rates. Over half of District schools reported declines in the proportion of students scoring in the FFB category. In mathematics, District-wide passing rates increased in four of six grade levels, and improvements ranged between seven percentage points and in grade seven and two percentage points in grade four. Math passing rates at all GESD schools were 55 percent or higher in all but the eighth grade. Just under half of District schools reported a decline in the FFB category, with the largest decline in grade six. In writing, passing rates increased in all grades with improvements ranging between 16 percentage points in grade four and six percentage points in grade three. Writing passing rates were above 73 percent in all grades. Passing rates in grades four, six and eight met or exceeded 80 percent. Passing levels in writing are at their highest level in the past three years. Fifty-nine percent of all GESD schools reported a decline in the proportion of students in the FFB category. Let there be no doubt: GESD students made significant strides this last year. These scores are a reflection of the dedication to students and the hard work that Glendale teachers bring to their classrooms every day, said GESD Superintendent Dr. Sandra D. Johnson. I am not only grateful for the work of our teachers, but also to the time and effort our families put into the education of their children. Our success is their success. Inside... Students like this one from Glendale American school will soon be returning to Glendale Elementary School District classrooms for the school year. Being in school on the first day and starting school on time is critical to student success. Make sure your child gets off on the right academic foot by being in school on Aug. 3. New grading system in effect for After much input from teachers and parents, the Glendale Elementary School District Governing Board approved changes to GESD s grading system. Grades will no longer be listed as from Falls Far Below, Approaches, Meets, and Exceeds. Instead, GESD will use a numeric system. Student scores will be recorded in the grade book as a 4, 3, 2, or 1 with 4 as the highest score. Averaged grades will be reported on report cards and progress reports as a number expressed to the 10 th place to clarify for parents how close the student s achievement is to the next level of proficiency. For example, if a student earned a 3.8, the student would know that he/she is very close to achieving the standards at the highest proficiency level. Gradebook scores are recorded as 4, 3, 2, or 1. The 10 th place is only used when reporting final grades to parents and students. The following grading scale will be used to calculate grades: 4 = 90 percent -100% 3 = 75%-89% 2 = 50%-74% 1 = 0-49% The grading system we were using was sometimes confusing, but we believe the new numerical system will be much easier for parents to understand, said Lori Shough, assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction. We know how critical it is for parents to be involved in the education of their children. Because this grading system is more easily understood, more parents will not only know about their child s progress, but when they may need to seek help for their child as well. 2 Services for disabled students available in GESD Pursuant to the Individuals with Disabilities Educations Act (IDEA) of 2004, each school district is responsible for identifying, evaluating and providing services for all public, private or home-schooled children with disabilities. If your child attends a private school within the Glendale Elementary School District (GESD), or is home-schooled and you feel that your child may need to be screened for a possible disability, you should contact the GESD Special Education Office at You may also refer your child for screening by contacting the school psychologist at the public school your child would attend if he/she attended public school. Parents with children from birth to age five may contact the GESD Preschool Office at to schedule screening for developmental delays. More information in regard to identifying children with disabilities can be found on the Arizona Department of Education web site at GESD does not discriminate based on the basis of disability in its educational programs, activities or employment policies as required by the 1973 Rehabilitation Act. McKinney-Vento provides service for homeless The McKinney-Vento Act is the primary piece of federal legislation dealing with the education of children and youth experiencing homelessness in U.S. public schools. It was reauthorized as Title X, Part C, of the No Child Left Behind Act in January You and your family qualify for benefits under the McKinney-Vento Act if you are living in a temporary arrangement because of crisis or hardship, or not living in the company of a parent or guardian due to hardship. McKinney-Vento rights include: Free school meals Title I services Transportation, if needed, to attend school of origin Immediate enrollment Immediate access and transfer of records if students are unable to remain at their school. For more information, contact your school office, or call the District s Homeless Liaison at For the latest news and information from GESD check out our website: Strictly scientific The interest of science was served last spring during the Glendale Elementary School District s inaugural S.M.A.R.T. (Science, Math and Real Technology) Fair. Students and community members were able to test their knowledge of science from among a wide varity of activity booths including one that tested how far and fast balloons can travel. Don t wait until December: make your tax credit donations now Taking advantage of the Arizona Tax Credit law just got easier for contributors to the Glendale Elementary School District (GESD): you can now go to the District s web site at to make an online contribution by Dec. 31, Online contributions make it convenient for parents and community members who don t have time to make a separate trip to their school or the District Office, and also makes it easier for your Arizona relatives to contribute from any where in the state. If you re unable to donate online, or to drop off a contribution at your school, you can drop off donations at your school or at the GESD District Office, 7301 N. 58 th Ave. Arizona tax law (ARS ) allows taxpayers a tax credit of up to $200 for single or head of household tax filers, and up to $400 for married couples filing a joint return when contributing to extracurricular activities in public schools. This tax credit is available to all Arizona individual taxpayers regardless of whether they live in the Glendale Elementary School District or have children in school. Extracurricular activities are defined as any optional, non-credit educational or competitive school sponsored activity that supplements the education program of the school. Activities such as sports, visual and performing arts, special programs, clubs, outdoor education, gifted programs or classroom enrichment programs can be funded with tax credit money. One hundred percent of your donation goes directly to the campus of your choice for school-sponsored extracurricular activities that benefit students by enriching campus life and learning. You can select which school or program you would like to support, or you can designate your money to be given to the school that has the greatest need. Please remember the donations are nonrefundable. You may make tax credit donations as early as the first day of January each year. GESD accepts donations throughout the calendar year. Tax credit donations must be postmarked or electronically submitted by Dec. 31st of each calendar year in order to be applicable for that tax year. The amount of the tax credit you make does not have to be for the total allowable amount. You can make a difference in GESD schools with just $50, $75, or $100. You can donate in installments throughout the year. In addition, donations may be split between one or more programs and/ or schools. Grades continued from Page 1 which a student has learned the concepts and skills for standards that were taught during the grading period. Through report cards and other progress reports, students and parents are informed about how students are progressing in their learning. This progress can be compared to student achievement performance on benchmark assessments in the areas of reading, math, and writing. Academic grades are reported separately from other workplace standards such as work ethic or homework completion to communicate how well the child is learning the standards versus how responsibly the student performs in school. If you have questions about understanding the scores your child is earning on classroom work and assessments, please contact your child s teacher. Health officials encourage flu precautions The H1N1 or Swine Flu is nothing to sneeze at. Officials from the Maricopa County Department of Public Health (MCDPH) say the flu is still circulating in Arizona, and that it is affecting younger people at a disproportionate rate than the normal seasonal flu. MCDPH reports than more than half of those hospitalized with the Swine Flu have been school-aged children. Many more cases are possible this fall, and because of this health officials are asking families to become more vigilant in an effort to keep schools and communities flufree. Parents play a large role in how the flu will affect schools. MCDPH recommends families take the following actions to help cut down the rate of flu transmission drastically: Teach your kids good hygiene That means teaching children how to cover coughs and sneezes using the crook of their arm, good hand washing habits and to keep their hands away from their face. Keep kids home when they re sick When a child comes to school sick, he/she can infect classmates at amazing rates. If too many kids are sick at school, MCDPH may be required to implement extreme measures such as closing school, which has a negative effect on all of us. Consider seasonal flu vaccine Although there won t be a vaccine for the H1N1 or Swine Flu until later this fall, the regular season flu vaccine should be available in September. The more students who are vaccinated with seasonal flu vaccine, the better the chance of preventing Swine Fly from jumping from child to child and to their families at home. If your doctor does not have fly vaccine, contact Maricopa County Community Information and Referral at for vaccine locations. Schools will be reporting any abnormal absentee rates to the MCDPH. L Test date, school, school district and county GESD students will benefit from federal stimulus plan The Glendale Elementary School District will receive more than $6 million in federal economic stimulus funds, but the funding comes with strict conditions on where it can be spent. Almost $3.5 million will come in Title I funds. Title I provides financial assistance to schools with high numbers or high percentages of students from low-income homes. Another $2.5 million will be special education funding. The federal dollars will be distributed to GESD over the next two years. The District will not begin to receive funds until the fall. GESD Director of Academic Support Programs Marcia Meyer said that Title I dollars will be used in three areas: academic achievement, early childhood and parent involvement. The District will spend the money on the following positions and programs: Prevention Specialists Every GESD school will have a prevention specialist who will deal with behavioral problems and other issues that affect students learning. The specialist will do individual and group counseling, and work directly with teachers and parents. Instructional Coaches Stimulus money will allow the Page 4 GESD Parent Connection GESD to add two instructional coaches. They will work directly with teachers, primarily those who teach students that are not making adequate yearly progress. Preschool Teachers Three additional preschool teachers will be hired, and the stimulus dollars will allow the District to continue to fund two preschool programs and open another. Adult English Language Classes The District will offer adult English language classes through a contract with Rio Salado College. Auto Dialer System The District will use this Writing with flair Students in Courney Craig s class at Don Mensidick school learn how to write correspondence correctly by acting out the major components of a letter: the heading (as Craig and her students demonstrate here), the salutation or greeting, the body, the closing and the signature. system to enhance its parent communication by sending reminders and announcements to families by using an automated phone system. According the Meyer, plans are still being made in regard to special education dollars, but part of that package could go toward the hiring of three additional coaches to work with special education teachers. It s important to remember that this funding will only last for two years, Meyer said. Still, it s a wonderful opportunity for GESD to put into place things we couldn t ordinarily afford and that will assist students connection.indd 4 7/24/09 3:58:40 PM
