Passing this assessment is a huge deal! Principal Andy Harlow and teachers congratulated the students on their tremendous success for passing all sections of the MSP. Proud parents joined in high numbers to celebrate the accomplishments of their children. In addition, many of these students played sports. A number of them earned Scholar Athlete awards. The Wahluke Junior High would like to send their appreciation to parents, teachers, coaches and students for efforts in these achievements. By Mia Benjamin Sentinel Tech Alternative High School has been fortunate to have the same faculty and a core group of students return from last year. This has allowed for the continued growth of programs and the continued building of trust between students, parents and faculty. This year s enrollment is up over 75 percent. These groups of new and returning students are very motivated. They have passed 58 classes so far this year. This is three to four times more classes than were passed for the same time period last year. Box 907, Administration Building POSTAL PATRON When parents meet with Kindergarten teachers for conferences this fall they will receive a new type of report card. State funded full day kindergarten programs are all participating in WaKids. The assessment used for this program is called Teaching Strategies Gold (TS Gold). This assessment focuses on the whole child. Teachers will observe their students on the following dimensions: Social/Emotional, Physical, Language, Cognitive, Literacy, and Mathematics. These observations will then be collected and reported using the TS Gold assessment. This gives teachers and parents valuable information not only on academics, such as counting and letter recognition, but also information on how the student is doing in areas such as making friends, solving problems, making connections, gross/fine motor skills and much more. Another benefit of this assessment is its use in the preschool classroom, not only in the Wahluke School District, but in other local preschool programs. The information preschool teachers are gathering on students will be very beneficial to the kindergarten teacher the following year. It is exciting to see the consistency emerging between the preschool and kindergarten classroom, as well as the valuable information this assessment is providing parents.

2 Dear Key Communicators, We have had a great fall in Wahluke Schools! Our staff are working extremely hard to make sure our students are mastering their grade level skill standards. Here s the latest about our great district! Online Bully/Harassment Reporting Form Our new reporting form is now live and online. We hope that students and parents will use this anonymous option for reporting bullying. These forms are also available in each school s office. To find the link just find the quick links section on the left of each schools webpage. District Roadmap We have been getting input from staff, parents, and community members to develop belief and vision statements for the district. Recently, we visited the Desert Aire Senior Center and shared our Academy program and gave them an opportunity to give input as well. Many districts have a vision statement, however often times no one really knows what it is because they are long and usually found in a binder on a shelf. Our goal with our roadmap is to create a reflection of our community to keep our goals in the fore front with a short and meaningful vision statement. Truly, I believe we are closing the achievement GAP which is illustrated in our roadmap with the GAP we see in our community each and every day. Remember, as we have all heard at some point in our life, It takes the faith of a mustard seed to move a mountain. I know our staff and community have faith in our students ability to make great things happen in their lives if they work hard in school. Language Focus In school districts like Wahluke, helping students learn English has to be a top priority. As you probably read recently the district met our AMAO (bilingual students learning English) goals for the first time! The work our teachers have been doing, along with our Academy focus and other efforts have been very intentional to help make this happen. A good example of this would be the district s recent hire of Richelle Palmer, a well known writing and instructional expert to help bring a focused effort around writing. Writing is an essential part of learning any language and will dramatically help move students up the four levels of English proficiency. Keep the faith and stay positive! Schools enjoying another first Wahluke School District is experiencing another first as test results now show that Morris Schott Elementary and the Wahluke District as a whole has met or exceeded all goals for Limited English students as measured by the Washington English Language Proficiency Assessment (WELPA). The Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction sets performance targets referred to as Annual Measurable Achievement Objectives (AMAOs) for English language proficiency. The AMAO s for English language proficiency are reflected in three categories: AMAO-1: Annual increases in the number or percentage of children making progress in learning English. AMAO-2: Annual increases in the number or percentage of children attaining English proficiency. AMAO-3: The number or percentage of students meeting AYP targets in the reading and math ELL cells. The District s combined scores met the state goals in each of these categories. Morris Schott Elementary met all AMAO targets for their building. All schools except the Junior High satisfied AMAO-1 by making great progress. Morris Schott, the Junior High and High School met the target for the number of students attaining English proficiency AMAO-2. All schools except the High School met the State targets for English Language Learning students attaining proficiency in math and reading on the annual State tests AMAO-3. School Closure Information Celebrate Afterschool Intramurals for K-6 Students Afterschool Intramurals for November are up and running with over 100 students in grades K-6 participating. In September students enjoyed art and fitness. In October kids had the opportunity to participate in the play The Secret Garden with the Missoula Children s Theater. This month students are enjoying science, board games, fitness, language and more. Afterschool Intramurals are offered 9 days a month. November s dates are: 7th, 8th, 19th, 20th, and 26th through 30th. Students can get signed up in their school s office. There is no transportation offered. In case of bad weather, please tune in to area radio stations or TV stations for possible school delay or closure information. Please make sure that all student contact information is up to date so that the District can notify parents of any change in school schedules. 3 Alternative Learning Experiences Being Considered Drive through Mattawa on any Monday morning and you will see students of all ages, dressed in uniforms, riding buses or carrying backpacks and on their way to school. But not all area school students get their education at Wahluke School District. Many are home schooled or participate in what is called an Alternative Learning Experience (ALE). In fact over 30,000 public education students in Washington State can be considered part of an ALE program. Many districts provide access to Digital Learning Programs for on-line classes, Parent Partnerships which support homeschooled families, or Contract Studies Programs for credit acceleration or retrieval. All of these programs provide access to educational resources normally available in a traditional campus setting. Wahluke School District is hoping to join hundreds of other schools in reaching out to those students that have chosen a non-traditional setting for their education. We are really in the early stages of a Parent Partnership kind of program, relates Tiffany Coulson who is heading the project. Based on what we are learning about the needs of home-based students in the area, we feel the district can start by providing access to public online opportunities. The idea is simple, the state offers a Digital Learning Commons that gives students access to hundreds of on-line courses in everything from math to languages and technology. Public school dollars are used to run the on-line programs and students receive direction from a certified teacher. We are also interested in helping parents of home based students design courses and purchase quality curriculum that will meet the needs of their children while still maintaining state standards. Parents would use state standards to set goals for Essential Academic Learning Requirements, Progress and Achievement. They would present curriculum ideas to a committee, and, after approval, the school would purchase the curriculum and check it out to them for home use. A state certified teacher would then make weekly contact with students, and monitor their progress on a monthly basis. This type of arrangement is a win-win situation for everyone. Coulson says. The face of public education is changing and making it possible for students in a variety of settings to be participants. If you have a home based student and are interested in learning more, please contact Tiffany Coulson at Notes from Wahluke Jr. High School Common Core implementation Junior high staff is beginning alignment to common core state standards, which will be fully adopted in The junior high is taking the lead alongside the district in aligning current state standards to the common core state standards. In an effort to ensure our students are most successful during this transition, the teachers have taken the lead by blending common core standards into all subjects taught. Fall Sports wrap-up - Winter Sports intro Fall sports at the junior high were phenomenal! We had 114 student athletes turn out for sports, nearly a quarter of our student body. The junior high students excelled this year, academically and on the field and court. Our coaches were instrumental in making fall season sports a success! The junior high would like to thank volleyball coaches Aaron Moen and Tiffany Hedman, football coaches Joel Dugan, Mark Hull, Corey Zirker and Cole Haberman, and soccer coaches Autumn Harlow and Lindsay Beerbower. The junior high is looking forward to winter sports, beginning with boys basketball with coaches Bill Tonge, Juan Martinez, Craig Sabin and Cole Haberman. Halloween Carnival a Great Success By: Angelica Alvarado and Rosa Rangel, WJH ASB We were glad to see smiles on everyone who came to the annual event. We enjoyed seeing children and adults having a blast! The ASB/leadership class would like to thank all those who helped make the carnival an amazing night; all the students who volunteered and helped out, the staff members who stayed and helped, and the community for coming and supporting our great carnival. We look forward to having a spring carnival in May, 2013! Relationships November 2012 Page 3 Visit our website at Harassment, Intimidation and Bullying Prevention October was National Anti-Harassment, Intimidation and Bullying Prevention month. Wahluke School District takes this very seriously. In October each building had a student assembly with presentations by Canfield and Associates, the District s risk management insurance company, regarding what harassment, intimidation, and bullying is along with tools for redirection and how to report. School counselors also followed up in the classrooms to answer questions, remind students of the seriousness of these types of behaviors and actions, as well as how and where to report such incidences if they occur. We have incident report forms available on the district s website at www. wsd73.wednet.edu for students or parents. These report forms are also available in English and Spanish in the school buildings and can be completed anonymously. It is important for parents to monitor their child s personal electronic devices if they suspect harassment, intimidation and/or bullying is taking place. Be sure to have access and passwords to cell phones, , facebook-private messaging, and twitter accounts, to name a few, in order to gain insight into what cyber-bullying may be occurring. The school cannot address the issue if it is not reported, so please report any incidents. For an action to be considered bullying, it needs to meet the following definition: Harassment, intimidation, or bullying means any intentional electronic, written, verbal, or physical act, including but not limited to one shown to be motivated because of his or her perception of the victim s race, color, religion, ancestry, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, or mental, physical, or sensory handicap or other distinguishing characteristics, when the intentional electronic, written, verbal, or physical act: Physically harms a student or damages the student s property; or Has the effect of substantially interfering with a student s education; or Is so severe, persistent, or pervasive that it creates an intimidating or threatening educational environment; or Has the effect of substantially disrupting the orderly operation of the school. How do I report bullying? If you believe your child is being bullied: 1. Obtain a copy of your school s anti-bullying policy and procedures. (Available on our website) 2. Contact the police if your child has been the victim of malicious harassment. If the bullying act was particularly vicious and the bully seriously injured your child or caused significant physical harm to your child s property, the bully may be guilty of malicious harassment. 3. Follow your school s procedures for filing a written complaint. The school is required to conduct an investigation. HS Students Receive Academic Recognition By Jeff Pietila Students at Wahluke High School have recently received academic recognition from the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA) and the South Central Athletic Association s (SCAC) Principals Association. Student athletes on the varsity and junior varsity volleyball, girls cross country, varsity football, and football cheer squads were all recognized by for Distinguished Scholastic Awards. To qualify the members of each team must have an accumulative team Grade Point Average between 3.0 and This award program is sponsored every by the Dairy Farmers of Washington and Les Schwab Tires. Wahluke students were recognized last week by the league s principal s association for having the highest rate of gain on the High School Proficiency Exams(HSPE). Sophomores at WHS demonstrated a 10.8% improvement in the percentage of students who passed the Reading HSPE. Wahluke students were second in the rate of gain in mathematics as well. Each year the league s principals present a traveling plaque to the schools that show the greatest growth from one year to the next in the areas of reading, writing, math, and science. This is the second time since the program was started three years ago that WHS has received recognition from the principals.

Morris Schott Elementary By Missy Stevenson, Principal y Consistenc It has been a very exciting fall at Morris Schott Elementary (MSE). Following is a listing of just a few of the things our students have participated in: Kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd grade students visited Bethany and Juan Martinez s pumpkin patch; we watched African dancers and world drumming; the Reptile Man came with all his interesting reptiles; the fifth grade class went to the Capitol Theater in Yakima to see the performance of Mad Scientists ; we celebrated student success on the Measurement of Student Progress (MSP); our students attended a health fair at the high school; and our 5th graders participated in a mock presidential election and voted Diana Ochoa as President and Olivia Favela as Vice President on November 6th. Our teachers have received professional development in mathematics from Dr. Susie Bollinger (ESD 105) and Writing Style and Structure training from our writing instructional coach, Richelle Palmer. We have worked together to develop a clear focus to guide us this year and are excited for the support provided by our families, community, and district. Wahluke High School recognized area Veteran s during an assembly coordinated by 21st Century Director Jay Scott. Active duty troops from the Washington Army National Guard participated in the ceremony. The Richland VFW post presented the colors, and the Wahluke High School Honor Band played the National Anthem. Flu and Cold Tips Morris Schott students participate in the fire safety training at the health fair. As we get closer to cold and flu season, we would like to share a few tips on how to keep your children and the rest of the family healthy. Teach your children and the rest of your family to wash their hands with soap and water frequently especially after sneezing, coughing or using the restroom. Hand washing is the best way to limit the spread of germs. Cover your mouth with a tissue or sneeze into your elbow to limit the spread of germs. If your child just doesn t feel good, it is a good idea to keep him or her at home. Nausea, vomiting or diarrhea is an indication your child needs to stay home until 24 hours has passed with no symptoms. Children with fevers 100* F or higher should be kept home until they can go 24 hours with no fever and without the use of medications to reduce the fever. If you need a thermometer, please contact the school and leave a message with either the nurse or the secretary. We are being provided with thermometers from the Grant County Health Department. Also consider taking your child into the clinic for a seasonal flu shot. School age children and the elderly population are most susceptible to the seasonal flu; prevention is the first line of defense. Lastly, it is very important to follow through with any/all immunizations your child needs. Student Jorge Nazario, helped by volunteer cowboys, goes through the motions of bull riding during the Rascal Rodeo field trip. Learning the Cowboy Way A select group of students from the Wahluke School District were able to participate in a once-in-a-lifetime experience on November 10th. Coordinated by Arley Semon, the District s new nurse, a handful of students were able to interact with professional cowboys. The Rascal Rodeo organization gives students the opportunity to share the adrenaline rush and sense of accomplishment of the western way of life with their very own cowboy or cowgirl. Students were able to participate in faux bull riding, bareback riding, barrel racing and roping activities. Thanks to the Rascal Rodeo organization, the Wahluke staff that attended the event, and to parents for participating in this rewarding field trip. New GTT Program at Junior High Parents were invited to participate during Saturday Language University and were provided with activities and games that they could teach their children and play together. Language University - Saturday School Linda Achondo, Coordinator Language University, also known as Saturday School, is a program that provides additional English language development for bilingual program students in grades K thru 8. This year we are excited to offer three sessions. Each session will run for six Saturdays. The first session ended November 17th and the second session will begin in January. Classes are offered in a two hour block for each grade band. During that time students participate in social studies and science language lessons as well as Rosetta Stone in the computer lab. Parent permission slips for the next session will be mailed to parents of qualifying students after winter break. Interr eality ogate R As we enter into November and the second quarter, our GTT kids are preparing to input their original furniture designs into the Inventor program, where they will be able to create virtual geometric models that can be viewed from every angle. Though each class is in different stages of this process, every student is gaining a solid understanding of the design process and its creative and mathematical components. Coming up! Our new Robotics Team attended an all day Robotics Competition on Saturday, November 10, where they gained a better understanding of what to expect during upcoming competitions. Also, be looking for the GTT webpage, linked to the Wahluke Junior High page, to be up and running Jr High Students Angelina Massengale and Heidi Casiano build a tower during GTT class using the project constraints: time of 10 minutes; and only use the materials available from the found materials box. 7 Estudiantes de la Preparatoria Reciben Reconocimiento Académico Por Jeff Pietila Los estudiantes en Wahluke High School han recibido recientemente el reconocimiento académico de la Asociación de Actividades Interescolar Washington (WIAA) y Asociación de Directores de la Asociación Atlética del Centro Sur (SCAC).
