4 Los cuatro cuadros Activity 1: Sit next to a partner, and put just one person s packet between you two. As your teacher calls the Spanish terms, try to be the first to find the picture/english term. If you point at it first, write down a tally mark in the margin. Activity 2: Next, with the same partner, play the dot game! The first person says the Spanish of two pictures/terms that are either side-by-side or one above the other, and that person draws a line connecting those two. Keep taking turns saying the Spanish and drawing lines. If you ever draw the fourth line to complete a square, write your initials in the box! birthday to break only children to celebrate uncle person to open younger sister cousins older grandparents
5 Tener = yo nosotros(as) tú él, ella, usted ellos, ellas, ustedes Frases con tener: 1. I have two brothers = 2. Juan Pablo has the balloons = 3. We have a dog = 4. They have four children = 5. You have a sister? = 6. You all have some cats? La edad (age) We can also use tener to express people s ages. Instead of saying I am sixteen, for example, we would say Tengo dieciséis años which literally means I have sixteen years. Try it! Translate the first column s phrases into Spanish, and then write what it literally (word-for-word) means in English. Common English Phrase Spanish Translation Literal Translation Back to English He is fourteen. Él tiene catorce años. He has fourteen years. Ana is five. They are eight. We are seventeen. I am fifteen.
6 Tener que Last chapter, we learned that Tengo que means I have to. Using the other forms of tener, can you figure out how to say 1. We have to decorate = 2. They have to break the piñata = 3. She has to take photos of the party = 4. He has to open the presents = 5. We have to write in Spanish = 6. You have to do homework = 7. My dad has to make the cake = 8. 10 El uso de de There are a lot of languages where the apostrophe s (as in Selena s or Diego s) does not exist. Spanish is one of these languages, and it has a different but easy way to show possession. Instead of saying Selena s cat, we say, the cat of Selena, which would be el gato de Selena. Try some short phrases: 1. Erica s sister = 2. Daniel s dog = 3. Rodrigo s cake = 4. Mia s guitar = 5. Julia s aunt = 6. Camila s grandpa = 7. David s brother = 8. Andrea s notebook = 9. 11 Entrevistas (Interviews) Habla con tres personas diferentes, y escribe sus respuestas (answers) en las columnas. Usa frases completas cuando hablas, pero escribe números o frases cortas (short) en la tabla. Vocabulario nuevo: los parientes = relatives Nombre: Nombre: Nombre: 1. Cuántos años tienes? 2. Cuántos gatos tienes? 3. Cuántos perros tienes? 4. Cuántos primos tienes? 5. Cuántos hermanos (siblings) mayores tienes? 6. Cuántos hermanos (siblings) menores tienes? 7. Tienes parientes en otro país (another country)? Dónde están? Cuántas personas tienen un gato o un perro? Cuántas personas tienen parientes en otro estado o país? Cuál sabor (flavor) es más popular, chocolate o vainilla?
12 Qué y que We have learned that qué means what, while que means who/that. In English, we could say The person that has the most siblings is Ana. We could just as easily say The person who has the most siblings is Ana. In Spanish, we just use one word: que. If the subject before que is one person or one group (a student, the family, etc.) the verbs after que should be in the él/ella form. Por ejemplo: The person that prepares the cake is my grandma = La persona que prepara el pastel es mi abuela. Practice with a singular subject: The girl that has the presents is my cousin. = The person that takes pictures in my family is my dad. Pedro is a student that never studies. Practice with a plural subject: if the subject before que is plural (the teachers, the parents, the boys, etc.), the verbs after que should be in the ellos/ellas form. I work with two people that speak Spanish. (use personas ) I don t like classes that have forty students. The boys that play soccer are here. (hmm ser o estar?)
